Ask GTP About Your Car Problems/General Questions

Go with the Ranger. If it were me, I'd rather have 4WD. BTW, I see you're looking in the Ham Lake area. Are you from around there? (I'm from Ramsey)

The Ranger will chew front tires being a Ranger. Too much toe change through the suspension travel. I'd say the S10. Eventually the 4.3 will ask for a set of intake gaskets and then will go another millennium and the front suspension design isn't near as nasty as the Ranger's.

S-10, I have one out in the driveway with more miles than that on it. Runs fine.

Of course with the Ranger there's the opportunity to do a solid axle swap.

True, but that costs money.

S10 is cheaper now and cheaper in the long run.

I'm a Ford guy and I like Rangers but I can't justify getting one over an S10.

Well there are several choices for S-10's nearby. Most of the cheaper ones are RWD, but if he is looking for a cheap 4WD S-10, This one is only $3,495 (also has less miles).

I think I'm getting a bit carried away though, better wait for him to return with more information. :P

I would prefer a 4WD, I will consider that S10 since I would prefer a Chevy.

True but it wouldn't be strictly necessary.

It may not be necessary but it would be nice when we get a foot of snow overnight.(Plows normally take forever to get the side streets)

I believe that my A/C compressor belt broke this morning but is it possible to run without it?

As long as your alternator or water pump aren't on the same belt, no problem.

Just don't turn on your AC.

Im fairly certain that this is a stupid idea....BUT im wondering HOW stupid.....spare tires on my rear axle=fun? But about how long would they last before they pop? I got this stupid Idea after checking how close my Generals were to the safety marker(okay they arent that bad) and I was all like....there is much less area on a spare tire hmmmm.

How heavy is the car, and how small are the safety spares? I know some people have tried the safety spare on the track route, but it's not as much fun as you might think.

Much better to go tray-drifting...

ORLY? How do you tray drift a RWD car?
And Ive seen that video before but im against stealing(as I dont know where to buy them) :grumpy: Cause That would be fun in my Buick :)
Oh and the spares would just be out of some random GM cars prolly grand-ams and the like....and my car is about 2600-2800 lbs

You don't have to steal them... but for some people, that's part of the fun.

Oh.... RWD. What kind of spares, then? If they're near full-size, then I think they'll work... just pump them rock hard. If they're thin safety spares, I don't think it'll work.

I got an oil change today and i'm past the second "dot" on my dipstick, pretty much up to where the dip stick bends (about half an inch above). Honestly i don't know if this is a problem; should i drain some of the oil out?

EDIT: Nevermind, as i figured, i just needed a little more time for the oil to circulate through the system.

Some RWD cars don't come with LSD stock though T-T

From empty to full on the dipstick is usually one quart. Being just over isn't terribly bad... as long as it's not puffing out blue smoke.

Actually... most RWD don't have an LSD... which is why they drive like most FWD cars... understeer, understeer, understeer...

Don't need an LSD for a flick-drift, though... :D

I may need that 91 240sx LSD though T_T. 1990 models never came with it. Dirt always help and so does water. 👍

My rx7 lays two lines thank you.

except once..... but that was a weird time :P

I just wanted to have a second opinion on how long i could "safley" play with some doughnuts before they pop cause although I can rotate my tires I like my rubber....

Safety spares are supposed to last 100 miles, aren't they? Should be worth a few weekends in a (hopefully deserted) parking lot, at most... and probably half an hour at full hoonage, at least.

okay, I can see a "half hour" generally i dont stick(or un-stick lolololol) around for too long anyways cause there is an apartment complex right by the church. thanks for the semi-reassurance. and I usually try to keep the antics to myself.

Yeah a church just had their parking lot redone black top and it has a hill in it to so i can get extra rotation if i want to :crazy:its very fun cause they have lampposts too:tup:

I bet it won't be fun for very long...

not very long. If its a full size spare, you'll likely get near as much as a regular tire.

If its the tiny one, they are not designed to handle any side loading. Hence why they say put them on the rear of your car only.

Eh? I dont actually get CLOSE to the lamps if thats what you mean....otherwise:dunce::confused:

Anyhow, I know that 3point strut tower bars are crappy but for $50 for both are they worth the money? But how much does it affect your handling if you only have say...the front one:confused: Also I think I might get some spare doors for $50 anyone else think so?

When I'm driving down the road it feels like my car is driving on balloons. The car is twitchy and almost feels wobbly. When I turn in real sharp it almost feels like the tires turn and then the car follows it if that that makes any sense. I guess what I'm trying to say is that that car's body is separated from the tires.

I've gotten an alignment, I've had the tires rotated, I've had two shops and the dealership check the front and rear suspension. I can't imagine it's the tires themselves but they are the correct size for the rims but I don't know. I don't really want to buy tires again, but if I must I will. Any thoughts?

Just one. Was it like that on the stock tires?
