AC2 is still very far away I think/feel/conclude!
They've not even decided on what software to build it with. The only thing we KNOW is that it will have rain and night even if it is set in space.

My guess is a least two years before it is anywhere near launch. By then PS5 and nextbox should be out or near out. If they build for them from the start they might get a run over everyone else.

Iirc they said they'd like to have something on show at next years SIM experience. Most likely nothing more than a tech demo with the engine that will be used. I'm not holding for a a release in the next 2 years. I just hope they can transfer current content directly over.

A new game with a new name would most likely require a renewing of all licenses. Toyota has suddenly become less cooperative with various developers. Porsche and RUF haven't been seen together in some recent games from franchises which used to have both manufactures included. I don't need the next title by Kunos anytime soon if these obstacles will affect future licensing deals negatively. I don't even understand why everyone is in such a hurry to see a successor to AC. I know it's old and the underlying engine has been pushed beyond imagination to its estimated limits, but AC still holds up really well when compared to competitors having launched new titles in 2018.

You've gotta remember that some of us have been dealing with these engine limitations for three years and for some of us it's become a bit tiresome and we know there's no hope for any real changes unless they start with a clean slate. And even with engine limitations aside, other things that could be added to the current engine aren't likely to get added because it doesn't make financial sense to put the time and effort into them when they know it won't sell any more copies of the game, so effectively they'd be doing the work for free and they're not likely to do that. A new game with a new engine solves those issues and would let the game finally blossom into a more complete package.

Year typo in my previous post... I obviously meant 2017.

Fair point. My opinion is most likely influenced by the fact that I've only had the game for 11 months (didn't buy it immediately at console launch because of the tearing issues). And when we're talking about a build meeting most of my expectations for the console version, I wasn't quite happy until we eventually got options and features like track surface conditions and custom championship grids, not to mention the newly released AI improvements. The core of the game has always felt solid though and I'm grateful it has finally come very close to my earliest and basic expectations for it. That's not to say I cannot see room for further improvement, and so far I have been a vocal critic of its little flaws. So the possible prospect of getting an improved successor does sound tempting. This being said and returning to my console version outlook above, for now I'm just ready to settle down with the game while looking forward to the scheduled DLC arrivals. The current AC experience on PS4 has been a long time coming, so I'd kind of hate to see it getting replaced "too soon".

Another point... Moving onto another engine isn't without its risks after all. Stefano and his crew need to be very aware of ensuring a transition that results in an experience at least as good as the current one. I look at other racing games and keep getting reminded that Kunos nailed something quite special. Marco recently talked about how him and Stefano were fortunate enough to meet the right people at the right time and make everything work beyond expectations within their small budget. It comes across like the kind of lucky strike they could not have planned for entirely. They now have more time to plan and redo the groundwork, but I'm not taking another small masterpiece for granted. I'm not saying other people are taking it for granted, but my urge for things like a blue flag system doesn't overshadow my appreciation for what we currently have.

Reg. Licences, obviously there will be some issues here and there. But hopefully most make it through. As for a hurry to see a sequel, well it's not really a hurry as we won't see one in the next two years. Having said that, we will not see leaderboards or anything like that without a sequel.

Edit: Also regarding a new engine, nice shiny new graphics are good and all, but i don't want. One of that shimmering and flickering going o just for flashy graphics. I'd be happy with their current standard of graphics, just with better lighting

Excuse my ignorance guys, but when you say "engine/engine limitations/new engine/old engine" what do you mean?!
Is it a graphical engine or the physics engine or what exactly?! And how are you dealing with the limitations of that?!
I mean I've been playing AC for like 8 months now and never felt limited by anything, maybe except for missing stuff (like weather etc...).

The graphical engine. I believe it doesn't support more than one light source. Which means headlights (that actually throws light at the ground) and such is not possible. Also weather, like you say. Rewriting that stuff for the current engine/game would probably yield next to no ROI. Personally I hope they go with the Unreal Engine 4.

Correct. Stefano didn't want to give up on MSAA to implement night racing, which would still cripple the engine performance. It's more than 5 years old and since rain + night is a must for the next title, it's time to upgrade.

My reasons for wanting this aren't related to the actual game holding up (or not) against others.

The main reason I brought this up some weeks ago was because they seem to be taking care of two separate games ever since the launch of the console versions, and they were never able to catch up and reverse this. The idea that comes out is that it's one big mess and a waste of time, to the point where Stefano sometimes just doesn't know what's happening in the console versions. I see that as a waste of resources and a recipe for (more) disasters. And as such, launching a new game, made from scratch and for all platforms sounds like something that would make sense. And quickly.

The other reason (directly related to the above) is: what are they living off right now? I'm pretty sure sales of AC are residual nowadays and that $8 DLC now and then won't cut it. Shouldn't they be deep in the development for the successor, to grant the launch of a new game in a near future? What was the consoles version for, if not an investment to make some extra money and use it to grow the company and take it to the next level?

And even for PC users (as discussed at the time and once again above) it's clear they want to move on to something more modern and fresh.

Keeping AC running and adding stuff to it seems (to me) like a waste of resources, for the reasons mentioned above.

The biggest limitation affects the devs more than us, really. There are probably things they want to do but then can't because of reason X. Leaderboards and e-sports for one. Also a new game will be built with porting in mind, so no team elsewhere, but on the same branch and porting alongside development. As pointed out too, a new game will bring fresh sales, which allows Kunos to work on things that aren't financially viable currently.

Yep, there's also another factor. Marco said a DLC race series will not see a return ( or not worth the investment for the return ), but a new game would make it worth including a race series or two.

Sorry... I don't know where to put this. I finished building my PC a few hours ago, and I finally migrated my Steam account to my new PC. Just wanting to see if Assetto did any better on the PC, I decided to benchmark the sim... Holy Expletive! I liked how AC looked on the Xbox, but I wasn't prepared for seeing it running first hand on a decent PC. MAN!

If anyone is thinking of switching to Pc, get Assetto Corsa over there too. Even if you played the console version to death, you will be floored at the sim on PC. This is coming from someone who did not play it on PC yet. But I sure as heck will in a few hours.

You should visit the PC Mod discussion thread ;).
Quick tip: Go to Racedepartment and download Good and bad weathers.

I do agree with the overall point of your post, even if i'd still like to see some bits of content here and there in the future before their next project comes to life.

Thanks for the tip. I'll take the post I wrote there as well.

Edit... I was going to remove the text and write something else, but seeing that it was liked, I'd feel wrong changing it.

Me too, though we at least have two packs coming still. Marco said Simone ( the track modeler ) was working on "stuff" when they had to hold off modeling Laguna. I hope "stuff" is Historic Spa.

Kunos has said it's not worth investing the time it would take to make the track.

"Marco revealed in Stefano's last stream Kunos already acquired the laser scan data for the track. But he also said he isn't sure if this huge task is worth doing, he fears it won't get much track time in the community. And investing six month into this project would not pay off."

Sure, I'm aware of that. That was however before the Laguna issues. He was working on something, who knows what. But it's plausible that he was working on something they already had data for. Or maybe he was working on something for them to test on their potential new engine?

Just noticed that AC has dropped to £24.99 on UK PS Store, having been £39.99 since the last sale. No "% off" banner across it, so I guess that's just a revised price.

Good spot. It's gone from €49.99 to €29.99 in euros as well.

Probably done to try to compete against P CARS & GT Sport.

VBR

Probably, but even at that price it's not much different to what I paid for a disc version at launch!

Kicking myself for not getting it in the sale because I've since preordered GT Sport on disc (DS4 bundle), and I CBA with swapping discs

It will no doubt be in the sale again.

The Ferrari DLC has been in submission for at least two weeks now. Is it supposed to take so long, or does Kunos keep doing something wrong? I could sit back and rely on my patience but I repeatedly wonder what these updates are going through.
