I've just played this for the first time.

I've always liked driving/racing games, although in recent years I've not played a lot aimed at being 'real' driving games, in terms of having lots of actual cars and tracks in it. In the PS4 generation I've also only ever played GT Sport, Rocket League and Overwatch, so I've even less to compare it to. I had a go at the Nurburgring online in a 911 RSR, because apparently I'm nuts. I at least improved from lap 1 to 2, I think I took 30 seconds or so off. I even only went off the track three times, and didn't hit a barrier at speed when I did.

Maybe I'll try manual gears next.

What are you using, pad or wheel? ( just curious ). Auto gears are poorly implemented from what I'm told, but yes definitely go manual, so much more fun. Also set ABS and TC to factory, you can then cycle through the cars real TC and ABS systems whilst on track. The lower numbers, I.e number 1 is the strongest setting. Don't forget too in some cars you need to blip the throttle when downshifting if you have damage on a high setting. If you set damage to low you still need to blip to get the downshift sounds, it's a lot of fun.

DS4. I had no idea what any other buttons were for and was too focused on trying to not squirm off the track when I was braking.

I tried an online race and after going through practice and qualifying I didn't realise you had to go through the menus on the grid to hit drive, and was sat still for 15 seconds. Ah well.

Assetto Corsa console servers are getting worse week by week... Last two months or so it took like half a minute to show servers, but now it doesn't update the list at all. I've been refreshing the list past few hours, but there's the exact same rooms with same amount of players & session time. Probably wont show recently created rooms anymore.
Damn PSN+ for console racing is not worth it.

I'm so glad that I've never subscribed & tried to seriously race online in AC, P CARS, or GTS. Tried GTS in the closed beta & demo, & it was a no from me. Tried AXC & P CARS with a free trial of PS Plus, & likewise it was a no from me.

Bad online experience got nothing to do with PSN+. It's the games themselves.

Both PC2 and AC have no host kick.
PC2 you can't see private rooms, or full rooms.
GTS, the player base en masse have moved from well hosted clean rooms (those that wanted to drive that way) to auto-stewarded Sport Mode races that everyone bitches about how bad the stewarding is and how bad the matchmaking often gets (unless you race in prime time).

But PSN+ works just fine.
Find a decent room in PC2, it's great.
Find a good room in AC, it's a miracle!
GTS still has a remnant of the old clean or kick rooms, but IMO the handling model took a dump after GT6, so even those that were clean find it much harder to drive their 700hp Zamboni's!

At this point in time, I'm still nearly 100% PC2 online, despite the issues. AC is a great drive, but there's not enough track choice for me... And PC2, yes, a fraction of GTS's base, but still enough to get you the odd good race which makes up for the rest..!

Does Assetto Corsa have a singleplayer offline career mode?

If you are on PC you can make whatever custom championship you want, with mods the possibilities are endless. The vanilla career mode is just a series of challenges that dont vary too much from a classic Gran Turismo license test or driving mission IMO.

Good info. Thanks for that. I'm still playing GT5 and GT6 enduros, up to 4 hour. I'm looking for a new game that's similar. For single player offline and a good, challenging career mode. I think I will get an Xbox or a PS4

The biggest challenge will be the physics . Not that Ac is difficult, it is very rewarding actually.

Special events are pretty good. Career mode is not very good but it is good for learning car set up. The early stages yiy can only set tyre pressure, then toe/camber, then suspension etc as you progress. Custom championship is where it's at though. Also race weekends are good if you want to chill as the first two sessions feel like a track day.

Thanks!
Is there a brief description of the contents available?

People here described it very well.

Career mode, challenges mode and custom championships.

Challenges mode is exactly that: races, lap time challenges, drifting challenges...
Career mode is like challenges mode, but with progression (you start with hot hatchbacks and end up with racing cars). Obviously here you cant choose the race you want, like in challenges mode, and you have to follow that progression.
And Custom championships, the gem of the offline side of the game IMO.

Regarding quick offline modes, you have quick race, race weekends, hotlap, time trial, drifting and pratice.

Thanks - all good info. I've got friend, Blair, who's been doing Asseto Corsa for a several months now. He's just now invited me to come over and check out the thing, so I will do that. He used it to prepare himself for real world lapping at the Nurburgring, and he said it worked exceptionally well for him. Of course, I have no ambition for real lapping at the Nurburgring. I'm only looking for a new and fun single player experience to follow from GT6. I will also check out Forza and make the choice.

Sounds like you have a few decisions then..
Buy xbox...Forza/Assetto Corsa
Buy PS4... GT Sport/Assetto Corsa

I'd go PC... Forza/Assetto Corsa/Project Cars 2/iRacing/Raceroom/rFactor2/Automobilista/Assetto Corsa Competizione/Race 07/GTR 2

Inevitably, as I age (71), I'm getter dumber instead of smarter. I've always had a Mac instead of a PC. I'd like to make the decision that entails the least amount of time and effort spent messing around with computing commands and as I've said, minimize the amount of time online. All I really want is single player offline career mode. I'm stuck at the moment with GT5/6, but want to believe in something better.

AC is straight forward. The presentation is dry and it is very easy to navigate. Events, Championships and Career are all there. Single player offers a lot and will occupy you for many many hours. The loadingtimes aren't to long and it looks decent. The AI is good too but the biggest satisfaction will come in terms of sheer driving pleasure. Steering is smooth and there is plenty of feedback.

AC is definitely better than Gran turismo in my opinion, also have a look at Project Cars 2 it has a great offline career.

Depends on what you are looking for.

Agreed. Lots of people have lots of fun with Forza. It may not be a super serious sim but that doesn't mean there isn't a ton of fun to be had. And sometimes super serious sims are lacking in the silly-fun-laughing-with-friends department, I had more of that kind of fun with GT5/6 than I've ever had with PC sims. Apples and oranges.

Edit: Not at all on-topic, but it's car related and thought you guys might enjoy this video I made of me playing in the snow last weekend with my WRX and my drone. :dopey:

Forza Horizon is great but the mainline Motorsport series is suffering from series fatigue just like the PS3 era GT games. You can only do so much with cars driving around a track, and the physics/FFB is still atrocious when I tried the FM7 demo on PC last year. I envy the car and track list but after playing Assetto driving in FM feels like a joke it's pointless. You can't just use the controller either because it's too far from an arcade game to be comfortable. Also with the amount of events and updates it's getting you pretty much have to dedicate your whole playtime to it to get your money's worth.

I agree motorsport has been getting boring.
