I think the vast, vast majority of car and track mods have questionable parentage (or grand-parentage), and even a lot of 'scratch built' ones use geometry or assets from commercial products in one form or another. The morality aspect is a never-ending discussion.

I agree. I take the thing for what it is. If it feels and looks good, I go with it.

I hate to say this, but Assetto Corsa may be the new rFactor. Especially in regards to mod content. I still think "Sports Car GT" made "rFactor" possible from its modding community. rFactor was surely popular with all kinds of mod content. However, I look at Assetto Corsa, and I note all kinds of mods for that too. Not only that, but sort of the simplicity of designing such content. I remembered I saw a video on how to make a track for AC using Blender and even the developer tools. It is all hard work, but it isn't cumbersome. Just making a simple track using your modeling techniques and skills doesn't take too much work. Polishing and enhancing it to be a masterpiece, though, will take some time; but at least you get a solid start if you're making a track for AC.

With this being said, I am tickled pink with a number of the mods for Assetto Corsa. In fact, on one site, there was some 7K or so mods for AC- more than Automobilista, rFactor series, and the GTR series combined! Maybe haters of AC will probably agree modding is where it's at for Assetto Corsa. I surely will want to try out mods should I eventually get Assetto Corsa.

[UPDATE] 7K mods on (that site), not 9K.

Well after FINALLY getting my PC rig up and running, and diving into AC in VR and trying out a bunch of modded tracks, all I can say is I am absolutely smitten! I was going to come here and write a post very similar to yours but you simply hit the nail on the had. My God...some of these modded tracks are BANANAS!!!! Rouen Extra Long Version, Glencoe, Solitude, Longford '67, and several of SIMTRAXX' tracks like Targa Florio are simply sublime, and driving them in VR just makes the experience even more orgasmic! Now can we get Dundrod.....some day.....please??? That and the full non-beta Shuto C1 and I'm good.

Sorry but AC is where it's at for me. I'm this close to uninstalling both Forza Horizon and Forza 7. I mean....no VR support, spotty wheel support, wonky car physics, and just overall blah for me. AC, iRacing, GT Sport and PCars....that's all I need.

When you have a chance, try, Bridgehampton, VIR, Paul Ricard, GoodWood, Donnington, Lake Louise, transfagaran, Suzuka, just to name a few more

The reason why I made some parallels to rFactor with Assetto Corsa was that some mod makers were developing for the rFactor series in addition to Assetto Corsa. When I saw a video on modeling a basic race track in Blender and then putting it into Assetto Corsa, that made me think of getting into the modding business for AC. A lot of rFactor stuff was either made for Assetto Corsa and/or are available for both games. So that has my interest somewhat in modding for AC had I the talent and desire.

The modding potential is certainly there for Assetto Corsa. In fact, the fact people are making quality mods for AC almost makes you question why you are even wanting to purchase the downloadable content packages for AC. I would be pretty much fine with bone stock Assetto Corsa and not lament or regret not picking up certain interesting DLC packages. I would just get myself some of the free updates. That's just me, anyways.

Has anyone had any spawning issues on Lake Louise's Crowsnest Up and Downhill Layouts? For some reason one of my rear wheels breaks whenever I attempt to practice on it. its happening with the NA Miata but i know i've had other cars do the same thing on this track.

You're far more likely to find a server using DLC than you are to find one using mods, for whatever reason mods aren't used much online. If you're an online racer this is pretty important. If you're an offline racer than obviously this doesn't matter. We all like and want different things from our games. :)

Welcome to the club! :D I remember my first day with Assetto Corsa - I played for hours and hours only taking breaks to refill my drink or use the bathroom. Don't forget to grab ALL the Rouen layouts. Sadly, the author didn't combine all of the layouts into one big package like Virginia International Raceway. Rouen short, long, reverse...they're all good in my opinion. Other must-have tracks, in my opinion, are: Lake Louise (50KM Freeroam and point-to-point races), Bilster Berg, Riverside, Alto Tajo, Aspertsham, Algarve International Circuit (Portimao), there is a new Algarve International Circuit coming soon from Tiago Lima - I've been beta testing it for days. It's a fantastic improvement on an already awesome track. More must-haves: Hope, LuccaRing, Joux Plane, Salzburgring (from the AC Reboot Project website - ALL of those tracks are worth having), Thomson Road Grand Prix Circuit, Tor Poznan, Maze Circuit, Ebisu East & Ebisu West (two of my all around favorites), Transfagarasan (From Sim Traxx), Paul Richard, Akina 2017, Mandagout-Pyregrosse, Road America, New Jersey Motorsport Park, Ebisu North (for small or low powered cars), Goodwood (the new one), Glava Zete and Blackwood. That should be enough to tide you over.

You'll discover which tracks you believe are worth it and which ones aren't. These are just opinions, of course. If you like hill climb types of "tracks" on regular car roads, not dedicated circuits, you've got to try Transfagarasan. It is beautiful. In addition to the re-worked Portiamo I mentioned above, I've also got beta versions of Feldbergring & Deutschland being built by @fat-Alfie - he's one of the few top, top tier track modders. No release date on those, unfortunately. @Lilski is working on that Watkins Glen as mentioned above. He's also a top, top tier track modder, so you know it's going to be killer. He's the creator of Bridgehampton, Riverside & New Jersey Motorsport Park which are all A++ quality. He also consults on projects and often contributes anonymously to other worthwhile circuits. @Pixelchaser is working on a scratch built Lime Rock. No ETA on that project either as some drama has popped up surrounding that project. I really feel for Pixelchaser - he's a really nice guy and I know this recent drama is really bringing his spirits down.

I will continue buying DLC packs from Kunos if they maintain the same routine - 6 or 7 cars or 6 cars and a track for $7.99 or $8.99. Even if I was't psyched about a single car I would purchase it. The price is ridiculously fair and who knows? maybe I'll end up liking a car or two once I give them some track time. Most importantly, Assetto Corsa is the only game that I play. I don't play 1st person shooters or RPG games. This is it. When I look at the thousands of hours of enjoyment I've had from Assetto Corsa I want to keep supporting Kunos Simulazioni so that they can get more licenses for content and/or expand the development team, etc...that requires money. I've had AC for 26 months and according to my Steam account I've spent $120.01 on Assetto Corsa and ACs DLC. That's a bargain. That's dinner for 4 with drinks which is about 2-3 hours of fun. I want Kunos to continue developing and providing me with fun, so they need revenue which I'm more than happy to provide.

We all would love to have more mods online in public server, the issue is that it is much harder to fill the server when using mods. So most server are using Kunos content in order to have a well populated server. For the same reason some track car combo are more popular than other, hence their is a lot of server offering the same thing, it is a vicious circle.:(

Yes, that's what I was getting at. I don't really get it though, there's so many mods out there and they're so easy to install and do wonders for extending the life of the game, yet they're rarely used online. You can find all the GT3s at Spa you want, but if you want to race the Escort 1600 at Riverside you're outta luck. Steam workshop would probably go a long ways towards fixing that issue.

Yes, hard to understand since they are easy to install and mostly free.

This is what keeps happening too me on the lake louise crowsnest up/downhill I have no idea why it always happens to this car but it does. I love the track I just wish this tiny thing would be fixed. The ND and AE86 Seemed to have worked I just don't understand why this wont.

Beautiful post and fortunately for me, I'm way ahead of you

Already grabbed most of those and you're right...they're STELLER! Still need a few so I'll be grabbing what's on your list that I already don't have like Riverside and New Jersey. And you're right, transfagararasan is OUTRAGEOUSLY dope!

Question about Rouen Les Essarts.....I only found a couple of variations.....Extra Long 2017 and Long Revisited 2017. You mentioned there's more.....Where are the rest of them? Also the one that says "Long Revisted" is only 1000m while the extra long version is over 6500m long! What's up with that? Why is the "long revisited" version so much smaller?

Anyway they're gorgeous and I also love Longford '67, Solitude, Trieste, Targa Florio and ummmmm........man....there's just too many to list LOL. I'll be playing this game for ages!

Is there any way to create a custom career that incorporates whatever tracks and cars you want? Also are there any good career mods other than the "GPL" one?

You can create your own Custom Championship series directly from the stock Assetto Corsa launcher, however, I implore you to download Content Manager. You can find a download link on this page here: http://assettocorsa.club/content-manager.html I also suggest that you follow the procedure on that download page to receive an unlocking key to have full access to Content Manager. There is no mandatory donation amount, but trust me when I tell you this, if you throw a couple of bucks for the full version you'll realize over time just how amazingly powerful this program is.

I don't know if a Custom Championship is the same as running a Career Mode, but there are tons of "Career Mode" addons that you can download from Race Department. You'll need to have DLC packs to run some of them. For instance, there is the Porsche Mobile 1 Supercup 2017 available for download. Well, obviously you'll need Porsche 2017 911 GT3 Cup car which is only available through a DLC package. Most Career downloads require only base Assetto Corsa content.

I don't really know what to say about that Rouen Les Essarts mess. I absolutely love the tracks, but the author needs to learn how to properly name files & upgrades. It was a major headache following the development of tht track. http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/authors/drmaboul02.244307/

Now that I bought Assetto Corsa yesterday, I have begun thinking about what mods to possibly get to enhance the experience. Interesting of note is that there are not only the usual fanfare of locations and vehicles to get mods for, but also AC apps. Most other games just have more of UI options and not to much apps like in AC. What was cool was seeing templates for the various machines offered to you- even including vehicles you may not have in your collection that are from certain DLC packs. Also, I noticed there is a separate application that has just the Showroom. I think the last car you viewed or used in Assetto Corsa will be the one shown in the standalone Showroom application. As of this post, the last car I viewed in AC was the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 race car. So that was the car along with the Showroom I selected. That is what showed up.

This is kind of a pet peeve, but one reason why I feel so bad trying to mod street cars is because you don't get to fancy them up with graphics. I get it that these are street cars, but you should be able to color them up any way you please instead of settling for one single color texture to define the car's appearance. Some cars I seen as templates for AC are proper PhotoShop files that can be dressed up and painted up. For example, I saw one template for the Porsche Cayenne. So I could be able to paint up my own Porsche Cayenne with any number of graphics. Possibilities. Nothing like it.

Still just trying to get into the Assetto Corsa ecosystem as a newcomer to AC.

You can paint any car any way that you want. You can apply "stickers" or whatever else your heart desires. No. It doesn't have some livery designer interface like Forza. PC sim developers don't waste time with that stuff. That's what the console games are for. If you head over to Race Department you'll find that there are 5613 different uploads involving Skins. Some of those individual uploads contain several skins within the archive, so it's safe to say that there are well over 20,000 skins on Race Department for Assetto Corsa cars. Here is a very nice example of someone making a simple, yet elegant package of skins for the recently released Lamborghini Huracan Performante: Skin Pack. Here is another example of 2 "racing skins" for the Performante: Skin Pack.

I think the best thing to do in the early days of getting accustomed to Assetto Corsa is to drive only Kunos cars on only Kunos tracks...avoid mods. Otherwise there is a very high likelihood that you're going to form opinions of Assetto Corsa based on poorly built cars or poorly built tracks. That's just a suggestion.

Content Manager is slowly developing an amazing tool for us called Paint Shop. Basically, it's almost what you were referring to in your post as far as making a new skin for your car. I don't know when it will be finished, but it already offers some nice capabilities if you're just in need of a new solid paint color for your car with custom license plates or whatever.

Once again...I highly suggest enjoying base Kunos content for quite a while. There is something like 160+ cars available (if you count in all the paid DLC). There's no way to get bored with the cars and tracks they provide for at least 6 or 7 months.

One thing I realized is that 3DSimEd had support for Assetto Corsa models. This is funny to me- Assetto Corsa doesn't have weather effects, but seeing the car animations in 3DSimEd includes windshield wipers working. The car models from the stock Kunos cars look impressive! I also noted AC has its own standalone Showroom application. It will show the last car you used and the last Showroom you used in showcasing your cars. So in my case as of this post, I saw the default Showroom with the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 when I loaded that application. Also, if the showroom has some kind of sounds or music, you'll hear them with that showroom. I almost thought about Gran Turismo Photo Mode locations and even the Premium-style showrooms in GT5 and GT6 seeing those showrooms.

I actually was considering painting up my own McLaren MP4-12C GT3 using the available template. I had one McLaren GT3 car I was working on for rFactor, but never completed it. I think I'll have an easier time making liveries with AC than I have with Automobilista.

The first half of the RSS GT1 mod pack is out, the models, sounds and physics are excellent by all accounts, remember to clutch/blip on downshift and some may prefer slightly further forward brake balance apparently.

http://racesimstudio.com/rss-gt-pack-pre-order-now-available
I was wondering if anyone purchased the RSS GT1 pack yet. Anyone? Class...anyone? You must be able to use the Kunos "Auto-Blip on downshifts", right? How do the cars feel overall? Do the first three released feel balanced against each other?

I won’t, I find it too much money for what it is, might have if priced like Kunos price their offering. I find the offer very mercantile not SIM like.

I found the Formula Hybrid 2017 to be fantastic in the ease of getting the ffb / physics to perform to my liking and the skins photo-realistic appearance is top quality. However, the Formula RSS 4 to be disappointing. I have not been able to get the RSS 4 ffb to feel as good as the Hybrid and the reflective qualities of the skins (shaders, alpha channels?) seem rather un-photorealistic. For that reason I'll wait on GT1 pack to read reviews before I consider buying it................For some I am sure the RSS 4 might be fantastic, I just have not been able to get it to perform for me personally...........👍

A few notes in my potential modding adventures. For one thing, I downloaded the Lite version of Content Manager. I have mostly used it to preview skins I've created. I also finally found a way to make custom skins for vehicles in Assetto Corsa. The method I came across was to right-click on the chassis and look up the name of the DDS file that houses information on the car's skin. For example, if the chassis is bound to a skin called "acskin.dds," I know I have to save my DDS file as "acskin.dds" when I want to make my own custom skin for a car. This now opens up opportunities to design skins and be able to preview them.

Another great thing about Content Manager is that it has a Custom Showroom option that allows you to use special Showrooms. I use the Default-Nice showroom because it is simple to use and isn't a CPU hog. I may use this feature to save images of car skins I create. The system is clever in that you can readily change up skins for whatever car you are looking up in a showroom. Also, it is possible to have the skins update in real time. I found this out as I was playing around with trying to design a skin for the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 car. One thing I will NOT be using is the Skin Editor feature if you install the Magick utility to Content Manager. It basically freezes the program. Thankfully, you can disable certain add-on programs to Content Manager. That's what I did.

Without mentioning any specific sites, I did visit certain websites to see certain custom skins people made for Assetto Corsa cars. Now that I know how to make custom skins for cars and after seeing examples from others, the next step is to simply get [back] into the car skin game. That is the main concentration of mine right about now.

I don't think the pricing is too bad (and this pack is supposed to be really good) but I've already got more cars than I know what to do with. I'm having a lot of fun with a variety of car mods that many sim purists turn their noses up at, like the F150 Raptor, the LFA, the Mosler, the GT500 pack etc etc. Most of these are probably Forza or GT rips but it means they are nice places to sit in VR because the interiors are modelled with detail and accuracy, so if you aren't too precious about the physics and treat them more like simcade cars then you can still have a lot of fun with them. It's just nice being able to sit in the cockpits of these cars in VR and run a few laps, because how else can I drive an LFA in VR? They all offer something unique, and mods like the F150 Raptor or the Bowler offer a vastly different experience to the 'typical' AC fare. The Raptor in particular is a lot of fun on wide flowing tracks like vintage Silverstone with it's elevated driving position, body roll while going sideways and ridiculous power. It might not drive like a real Raptor (or maybe it does - I'll never know) but it IS a whole lot of fun, and that, ultimately, is why I play this game.

Oh, and Merry Christmas everybody..! :)

You simply can't expect a small modder group to use the same pricing Kunos uses.

But it's fine if people don't want to buy it... as long as they don't download it for free.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

I just gave myself a whole bunch of nice Christmas gifts in the forum of modded cars and tracks  Will be spending my day enjoying many of them :)

And yes Content Manager is the shiznit.

I for one have purchased it, once the 6 cars are out it works out at about £2.08 per car, which is cheaper than their usual prices, and frankly having followed their progress thread, it's still a steal.

The cars are a challenge to drive, they're very much alive around the limit and you have to work hard to be fast. All 3 handle distinctly and are most importantly a lot of fun to drive.

The sounds are a standout feature, especially the external engine notes.

The racing is very close, the Ferrari being the quickest of the 3, but then it dominated the 2004 season so it's to be expected...

Downshifts are fine and can be dealt with by a blip of the throttle (no clutch needed), I haven't tried autoblip.

Edit:

Also, the reason I came here was just to remind everyone about how fantastic the AC Legends GT mod is, and how much I love Bathurst. Absolutely fantastic combination.
