Audi R8

I support the diesel idea. Modern diesels no longer sound bad, they don't pollute as much, and have huge amounts of torque. I see no reason not to like it, especially since Audi is one of the leaders in Diesels - it'll also give an extra boost of image in the diesel department.

if the Q7 TDI is any indication of the performance that is possible with the big-diesel, an R8 version would be very interesting indeed!

I would think that Audi's R10 walking away with the win at Le Mans should help quite a bit, too. Audi's been a leader (at least, marketwise) in the diesel segment for quite some time, and this is the next logical step for them. Diesel has a long relationship with SUV's, so that's a no-brainer. It's also popular with sub-compacts, and rapidly gaining popularity with larger sedans. All that's left is the sports car segment. After the half-effort of Peugeot's RC Spades/RC Diamonds concepts, the R8 diesel couldn't have been timed better. And what better way to distract from the fact that it's Audi's Gallardo than a V8/V10 diesel?

Germany is Diesel country, 45% of the cars in fact. I can't remember the last time I saw an Audi without Diesel, and I see like 50 a day.... from a rational standpoint they are great, I just don't like them ... personal preference.

I think the German and to some extent the American automakers are attempting to make America a diesel-power country as well, so it will be very interesting if Audi does decide to make an R8 TDI, if they will sell it here or not. It would certainly validate diesel power to many Americans who still seem to think of then '81 VW Rabbit instead of an '06 Touareg V10 TDI.

most of europe is a diesel country nowdays.

VAG, BMW and MB are all teaming up together to make even superior diesel engines to lead a najor offensive at the massive untapped american markets.

Yeah, I have read that they banded together on the DaimlerChrysler BlueTec technology and will adapt it to their own engines. I believe GM is re-engineering their diesels from Germany to match American emissions standards, and they want to have them optional by 2009, 2010 at the latest. Mercedes is pushing their new BlueTec engines pretty hard, as for the 2007 model year, they are the only diesel-powered vehicles that can legally be sold in the United States. VW will be back for 2008, or that has been my understanding, and for BMW there has been a push to get the 330d here (Car and Driver will be racing three of them at Thunderhill this fall), so we will see what happens.

...I've been looking at TDI Golfs and Jettas, but with our "fuel crunch" has kept their resale prices quite high. I wouldn't be losing out on performance though, and thats a good thing. Plus, I get to look into modifying the diesel engine, and that certainly excites me just a bit. A guy that I met at Gezon a few weeks ago has an '00 Jetta TDI that he had managed to double the output on his old 1.9L TDI (90 BHP to 180 BHP), and still get pretty great MPG. Awesome!

Anyone else notice similarities between a 2004 concept and a 2006 supercar?

this is a great car. i would buy one if i had the money. it is one of the best cars ever. but it suffers the same fate as the bugatti veyron. the bugatti is just overly ugly. the r8 however isn't ugly. but it does look like a glorified audi tt

After it's mid-April meltdown on the Ring it looks like the V10 version might be back testing. Could we see the 10 cylinder R8 next year as an SR8?

The Audi R8 turns heads on public roads like few other sports cars on the planet, and its 420 HP V8 makes for a terrific track toy too. We've been reporting to you about a forthcoming Gallardo-sourced V10 R8 for some time, but the pumped up supercar has been absent from the 'Ring since its melt-down a few months back.

The illustrious spy photo gang led by Sir Hans Lehmann caught the V10-powered Audi halo car back on the 'Ring, and this time it's ready for disaster. There are two red switches at the base of the a-pillar that can quell any fire with an electronic, foam-based extinguisher before the expensive prototype burns to the ground. The larger air intakes behind the doors and modified rocker panel skirts will help differentiate the R8S (or whatever Audi will call it) from its $109,000 "base" model, but the angry growl of the V10 should be a tip-off too. It's good to see that Audi has gotten over its fear of fire and is back on the track with the V10 R8, and we'll continue to eagerly await the 2009 Audi supercar.

If the price doesn't increase too much I could see this being a wonderful car, much better in fact than the Gallardo that it shares so much with. The problem is, I'd rather have that rumored V12 TDI version from a few months back. That at the very least was "cool" in a dorky sort of way and furthermore pays a better homage to the current R10 racing program...

Apparently the only reason why audi are now sticking in the RS6 engine is because the diesel motor for it got canned.

I thought Audi nixed the idea of a TDI R8? It would be cool if they made it though, I mean come on how cool would it be to say I have a supercar that does 25mpg and has enough torque to power a small planet.

My dad went with his friend and did the Audi Sports Car Experience. Here are some pics, spent the whole day driving the R8 at Infineon all day. Yea, i was a little jealous. Also, I talked to the guys at the Penske Audi dealer in San Diego (The had a RS6, RS4, and a S8) and he said that Audi will release a TDI R8 next year.

There's a 2-year-long waiting list to buy one at my dealership.

Customers are swearing to me "the R8's vaporware" and "only exists on the internet!"

Audi's extensive attention to fire worries me a little. Maybe the production car will be a little to vulnerable to getting a little too explosive on the track?

Other than that, wow. Should be a very quick car.

Yeah the one that apparent;y pumps out over 600hp but is only listed as 580hp!

Yes, probably. I've just assumed they gonna put in the NA-version of the V10, so that R8 wouldn't be "too fast" and affect the sales of Gallardo. Well, we'll see.:)

R8 V10 final figures.

V10
5204ccm
386kw/525ps @ 540Nm

Dont ask me for a source. take it as "speculative".
