Great write up LF.....it's good to get some feed back on the nights events.
Did not feel the cars as much as SAR and i need to do some tuning to find that balance of power and stability - also need to learn not to turn the system off before saving the game file as i did on Sunday(found all my tunes gone).

Had a few WGT moments - as did most of us - but can see that with abit more practice these cars can be very rewarding.
Peter - wgt - means 'wailing & gnashing of teeth' - think i saw you chewing your steering wheel a few times.

Yep thanks LF, enjoyed the read. I can rarely remember the details of who did what when so my after race posts are usually brief. It's a blurr of feelings and images for me rather than names & details, except if there's something negative, that of course I remember.

Always nice to read about other drivers experiences.

I agree with you Chris there is development potential in the cars and I reckon we will see change in the results over the month e.g. I predict I won't win another LM race as others develop their tunes & comfort in the car, but somewhen I'll score a podium in the Vette, thanks to system instability, lol. And the 550PP races will turn into close tussles and a lot of fun.

Will be race-testing my Vette tonight, and probably trying to tie in with this V-Power 800PP event.

If any of you mongrels is able, it'd be nice to see some familiar faces on the grid... :sly:

*hush-hush, whisper-whisper* ...might try the GT LM out too, at some point!

G'Day fellow Aussies !

I was wondering if anyone could help out with a query I have ?

At present I only have a poxy dialup :yuck: internet service, so I am unable to play online or update for that matter ( still with spec 2 from the disc that I bought bundled with a PS3 ).

I am considering buying a prepaid Wireless Broadband stick ( USB modem ).
The one I am interested in is from vodaphone and claims 7 MB/sec connection speed.

Would this be suitable for online play ? or would the fact it is wireless lead to excess lag ?
Thanks in advance.

Hey viperin - I'm at work, so can't dig out any threads where this is discussed (...and it has been discussed), but from I've heard, YES, wireless can cause lag. In fact, wireless has been known to give a very average connection profile full-stop i.e. disconnections.

When you get a chance, do a 'search' for wireless, and see what comes up :)

We have an old 3G Vodaphone wireless modem (for travelling) slow and poor coverage. We also have a Telstra NextG wireless modem which is better & slightly faster. Neither are of the speed you mention 7 Mbs. If you get 10% of that you should be able to play.

Most of the discussion on gtplanet is about the wireless connect of ps3's within a building to a hard wire adsl connection. That is generally a bad idea and results in all sorts of probs including lag.

A wired connection from a ps3 to a pc which links to the web via a high speed wireless modem may not be discussed much here. Maybe you will find something on whirlpool.net.au on the performance of wireless modems and be able to determine if the one you have been offered will do the job.

Good luck

Well not being an Aussie, for starters (in NZ), I could nevertheless share my experience. I am connected using a wireless connection (my ISP is vodafone - who bought out IHUG). my actual connection is supplied by Compass Communications - who bought out Wired Country).
The wireless is taken care of with a proprietary aerial (that points at a local POP) and 'blackbox' that plugs into my router, The connection speed I have is 2Mb/0.5Mb, but I know that the gear is capable of at least 4Mb and likely more.
What I think is more important, for gaming especially, is your response time or ping rate. I get 20-30ms response time. I used to get <10ms pings, but I assume it has got slower as they have added more customers to the local POP.
Anyway, 20-30ms pings seem to be fine for GT5P at least. I'd say 50ms or less should be more than adequate. So maybe you could ask what ping rates you would expect to see with your usb stick, or ask in a forum what other users are getting in your areas. See if you can get a demo in the shop, and ping their DNS. Can you connect an external aerial?
7Mb is way, way, way more than you need for the bandwidth for gaming, so thats not your issue. Your response time, potentially, is.
I have used a 'vodem' usb stick (a friends) before, and general internet use was fine, but I didn't try pinging anything, so I can't comment on what you might expect as far as response goes.
Wireless internet in itself is not a reason to have excess lag. Just don't consider a satellite connection. your pings will be ~300ms at the very best. (been there done that).

RUN AWAY FAST!!! :D

No, seriously, those "claimed 7mb" speeds are rubbish. It will vary from nothing to a bit slower than regular broadband, back to nothing and generally just frustrate the hell out of you. It is bearable for patchy web browsing, but not for the requirements of online gaming. Can't you get regular ADSL where you are?

Hey all,
Thank you for the prompt and detailed information.

According to Telstra, I cannot have an ADSL connection, as the exchange I am connected to is full :grumpy:
I was hoping not to have to deal with them anyway as I thought the Wireless method means I could piss the big T off altogether.

I will do some more research and see what happens.
Hoping to see you all on the track soon 👍

Some good information there guy's (think i learnt something)

Have been busy with work and home life so not alot of seat time this week - may be un able to make SAR aswell (and no i'm not bored with it!) gotta's pay's the bill's.....keep a spot on the grid for me :)

I might also struggle to make SAR this weekend. The house has been invaded, some folks coming in from NT, so it might be even more rude than normal if I slope off and play.

Oh... and I want the stop on the grid IN FRONT of Wayne, if it's free :D

I might make one or two races at SAR, but should be at MNR.

Folks from NT in Macedon? In September? Cheeez they'll freeze.

From last week...

👍

I'm guessing SAR was very quiet... no posts... but how about MNR... anybody out there is Aussie/Kiwi land likely to be on-track tonight... besides me?

I was the only one online, wasn't going to race, just chasing ghosts....back to basics for me for time being. Did the Audi R8 time trials at Suzuka and am 0.138s behind you Chris. You're ranked 100 and I'm 105. So very hard to keep it smooth and not be tempted to push too hard. I feel I can shave about a second off at best, some pretty awesome times posted at the top of the table 👍

I'm sorry I wont be there tonight. Busy at work is an understatement to my weekend. Flat tack for 5 days straight. Be next week for sure! Have to get back and defend my Tuned 'vette win (yes i'm proud of my one win in ages :D )

Have a good one guys!

What kind of numbers we getting these days guys???

I should be there next week :D
Three weeks ago we had full grids... but it's a little quieter atm... only four last night. GT5P fatigue has kicked in for a few people... but we still have fun.

C you on the grid, Tiz 👍

MNR

Some great races I was in tonight!

Race1: DNS - KZ2 clan match
Race2: 6th
Race3: 1st
Race4: DNS - Start time confusion
Race5: 3rd

Race2: Running S1 tires was definantly not the way to go...being 10kph slower at the apex of every corner just saw me fall backwards. Was a lot of fun though. Had a good race with the french guy for the first 2 laps. Fell into the clutches of ripping silk and joeninety on lap3. Had a good battle keeping joe behind me, until lap5 where I thought I ran him wide. I kept going with ripping silk to battle it out through the last sector but pulled up at the line and reversed down the main straight to give joe his place back.

Race3: This went a lot better than I had hoped for. Cracked my first 1:53.xx in this race outside of a draft. Spent a lot of my time about 2 seconds down on Stonemonkey until about lap 5, I appeared to be faster in the essess while he was faster over the last half of the circuit. I made a mistake on lap 5, and it stretched out to 3.3 seconds.

He then made a mistake a lap later, bringing it down to about 1.7 seconds. Lap 8 we both went off at Degner and he ended up about 2.4 seconds ahead where I thought it was all over. Pushing harder still I had the gap down to about 2 seconds on the last lap, it was tenths here and there, watching every split time as I rolled through it.

Lap 9 I think Stone made some mistake through the chicane as I came out of it closer, and some guy in a skyline who was many laps down decided to pick up Stone's draft, which in turn gave me a draft. I was .5 of a second down over the line on lap 10 and on Stone's tailpipe going into turn2.

I was much more stable through the essess and Stone appeared to be struggling, almost losing it heading up through Dunlop, where i tapped him, he regained control and we set off again. Coming out of the chicane I had a better drive and with his draft, pulled along side into Spoon, outbraked him on the inside but too deep he took a tighter line, I lined him up down the back straight and passed him into and through 130r. Kept it tidy through the chicane, took it slow and steady to roll home 1st.

Race5: Started well, from 6th into 3rd by the 2nd corner. Following Stone and Vrrm. 1st lap chicane was a bit messy, I ended up being caught out by Vrrm's braking and tapping him, he ran deep into the chicane as I waited for him on the outside, he appeared to wait for me on the inside, so I thought quickly as stone was getting away and took the place.

Lap 2 into the chicane, i was too deep, ran across the inside grass and slid into the middle of the track, vrrm hit me, so i pulled over and slipped between him and Devie. through the essess I was a bit messy and probably caught Devie off guard a bit. Devie ended up tapping me into the dirt at the bottom of Dunlop curve, he didn't stop so I assumed it was a lag tap and carried on, nearly collecting Joeninety when I rejoined the track.

I started to put the hammer down and two laps later I was past Joeninety as he took a wider line through Dunlop and let me past. Chasing Devie and Vrrm who were having a great battle up ahead, I put in my fastest lap I've ever done in the Vette, a 1:53.913. Lap 6 I had caught them coming out of Spoon, drafted them down the back straight, as Devie went past Vrrm into 130r, I took it easy, but they both opened the door for me and I went past both of them with a late braking dive into the chicane. Was too keen to get away from them as I slid coming out of the chicane, and we went 3 wide down the straight. Vrrm with the biggest balls took 2nd place with me and Devie going side by side into turn 1, I guess I turned in too tightly and was tapped by Devie and pushed into the dirt.

Getting out of the dirt, I figured I could catch them both with a few laps left, provided they kept battling it out. Devie though, decided it would be best for him just to get past Vrrm and leave it at that...which he did.

From what I could see, Vrrm tried to hold on but ended up making a mistake too many putting me in striking distance. Lap 8 and I had caught up coming out of Degner 2. Was thinking about a pass into spoon, but thought best of it. Then drafting him down the back straight, I was alongside but as I came to the bridge I thought I would guarantee my 3rd place by letting him roll through 130r. I positioned myself through the chicane, pulled alongside down the front straight and nailed him into the braking zone of turn1, my favourite place on the track to pass. I put a bit of distance between myself and him through the essess and rolled on to take 3rd overall.

As per usual, I had a lot of fun, its always great racing with you guys!

Can I suggest we change the start times? It seems that we have a lot of failure to connect now that we are at an obscure time to avoid randoms. Every race that connected tonight had a random overseas host. So I was just thinking if we run at the usual xx.00, xx.30 etc we will get more consistent connections by using randoms as our hosts. Personally I would rather better connections and bigger fields of MNR's with Randoms than the sometimes split races with one or two other MNR's and failing to connect 3 or 4 times. Thoughts?

I had massive connection problems all night.. I gave up when it kept singing me out of PSN .. :-(

@Devie - sorry for tagging you out of last turn at Fuji in race 4 - should have let you take the line before me.....i guess that was the reason that in race 5 you gave me the same treatment - fair enough too!

MNR results

Race 1 - 2
Race 2 - 3
Race 3 - 1
Race 4 - 3
Race 5 - 4

Some good racing thanks guys, a bit of fun door rubbing, only suffered one questionable bump pass. Generally a good night.

Going fishing early next Sunday for a week so won't be around for the last weekend of the month's racing.
