Sorry to be taking up space in the racing thread, but I told a couple of guys I'd post a pic of my setup - it's pretty funny in action - and ask for advice on a new one.

Lol, Wayne I admire yr cabinet, but I don't want one.

The pic is on TORC here.

Your kidding! The pedals are not even fixed to the floor, how the hell are you so consistent?! and that chair....at first i thought it was a rocking chair.lol

Well your a living, breathing example that age is no barrier to a hard charging online racer:tup:

Lol, Very kind of you to say so. I'd put it down to the absence of brains, lol, the older I get the synapses splutter, fewer cells work and then faster I seem to go, so far......

I'm hoping to lose enough so that I can drive like a 15 year old and outrun Madison et al.

Still seems to be network problems around. First race had to have 2 goes to get in, second race get on the grid and disconnected. So much for improving the servers......

Missed the start of race five. :(

Pity, I get the feeling Lion_Face and I would've had another absolute cracker of a race :D

For five laps of Suzuka, we were all over each other, I think twice we went through 130R side by side. Absolutely fantastic driving, and great fun.

Apologies to Crazyhorse (TORC_stonemonkey) - I hit him in the inside rear corner at the Fuji Chicane on the third lap (outbraked myself). My F40 was a real handfull and I backed off after that, my driving was starting to go downhill anyway.

Great Racing all round! But a weird night for me with randoms...

Race1: Didn't connect host first time, I ended up hosting 2nd time round with Supersonic and ED55 in the race, they were both in F430's and I was in the GTR. I thought I would pull away and let them dice over who's to come 2nd. Of course, I didn't count on the fact that they can drive the F430 and I can't drive the GTR...

So Supersonic surprised me with his speed and smooth lines in the F430. The GTR with its power and 4WD made it easy for me to take whatever line I wanted, while the F430 wasn't so forgiving, so I thought i'd have some fun, taking different lines, squeezing Super on the exits of corners, being cheeky, under/over cutting him through and around corners and generally having a bit of a blast! Our messing around kept ED near the action until lap 8 where I cut the inside of the 2nd last corner and copped a penalty for it. I was left chasing the 2 F430's 3 seconds down...
Luckily for me, ED decided he wanted to have a play and pulled a move into the 1st corner on the last lap, him and Super diced for the next few corners until after the long right hander, where ED lost it and I walked home to a 2nd place finish. Not my best race but had some fun :D

Race2: I hosted this race, with Super i think joining on the grid for a second or so before disappearing. Joeninety in the Clio and Vrrm in an Elise along with myself. I spun out after the 2nd corner. Cursed the Elise and my hate for it. Raced on in last, some 30 seconds behind after a dismal 1st and 2nd lap. Joeninety D/C'd about lap 4 handing me 2nd....lame.

Race3: F40, love the car, hate the servers...glitched upon joining, I started at the back of the start straight with no HUD. Quit game/rejoin, joined in with a random who Hosted, he quit after 4 laps in the S2000. I carried on, and it didn't D/C me. Completed 10laps, and Won the race against myself....lame.

Race4: Best race of the night! Stonemonkey, Me and mrvajj in Clio's, Joeninety showed up in an Elise. Couldn't keep in touch with Stone, as mrvajj kept on diving down my inside! Stone pulled away easily a few seconds a lap as myself, mrvajj and Joe had a tussle for 2nd-4th places. mrvajj and I had an awesome battle that lasted all the way from the start line to the finish! Swapping places almost every sector! Some close tight racing that was hard but fair. Many times into turn1 and 130R side by side. End of lap3 I figured I would have to be ahead at the chicane to take 2nd place, which meant I would have to draft him down the back straight and pass him through 130R.

Lap4 came, we once again went through 130R side by side, I came out ahead, Joe caught us through the corner and they both went either side of me into the braking zone for Casio Triangle. Joe down the outside, mrvajj the inside. My intentions were to give mrvajj the place back and hold off for the lap behind him, but he braked too late and ran off the course, I took the opportunity to push on and try to make the most of it. Unfortunately he and Joe recovered quickly and wasn't far behind. I saw him catching me through the degners and I took a wide line into the hairpin to give him 2nd place. Following him through Spoon, I got a much better drive out of the 2nd apex of Spoon and quickly made my way to the inside, which he closed the door, i tapped him gifting him some speed. Pulled alongside from the draft into 130R again, but taking the inside line, I wasn't in the prime position for Casio Triangle. He was on his marks for the braking, even though once again a better line provided me with a much faster drive out of Casio, he took a tight line down to the finish and I had no answer for it! Great race, well deserved 2nd.

Race5: I was in the F430 for this race, but just joined some randoms, no other MNR in sight! Raced my way to last position cos my setup is balls for this track/car combo. Supersonic, if you have any tips, send 'em my way :D

Final results

Race1: 2nd - 3 MNRs in race
Race2: 2nd - 3 MNRs started, 2 Finished.
Race3: 1st - No other MNRs
Race4: 3rd - 5 MNRs in race
Race5: 1st - No other MNRs.

Great description lion_face! On that last lap, I got out of shape coming into the second half of Spoon curve, I came in a little bit too fast and had to lean on the understeer a little to wash off some speed. It's great to be able to race that close for five laps of Suzuka, I think your car had a tad more power, and mine had a bit more grip. Let me guess, you were on R2's? :D I felt like a right fool when I outbraked myself coming into Casio on lap three, but I managed to keep the front right on the road and eased it back onto the track, and I was happy that I hadn't hit you or GTP_Joeninety. I loved 130r side by side though, that was a real treat.

The setup I have for the Clio isn't ideal, but its getting close. Its strongest in the braking department, but could probably use a little less understeer, just that I'm worried about sacrificing drive off the corners.

I'd like to give Joe_ninety the "Banzai award" of the night too, I don't know how much more speed he was carrying into turn one on lap four, it sure made an impact! :D All good though, I could tell it was very accidental.

My Results:

Race 3: 2nd (only one other MNR'er)
Race 4: 2nd (Four other MNR'ers)

Apologies to Crazyhorse (TORC_stonemonkey)
No worries... every other lap in the F40, it feels like the brakes are shot... she stops like a bloomin' oil tanker :scared:

To Everyone: Considering the connections dramas people had tonight, I'm strongly considering half-points for the round (SAR & MNR).

We all know that the points don't really matter, and the guys that lost out... we'll... I'm sure they wouldn't begrudge the connected-lucky their full quota of points. Equally, I'll be surprised if there's too much grumbling from those who did connect if they only get half the points, as that will go some way to keeping the standings tight...

...but as usual, happy to hear opinion :)

Race 1: First attempt failed, got in second time. Fun battle with lion-face and then ed. Was surprised to be contending well with a GTR and managed to win.

Race 2: Got on the grid then DC'd.

Race 3: Great racing with rob with wayne watching over us. Got close at the end and on the last lap was amusing as each of us tried to purposely go a tad slower so we had the best possible draft. Crossed the finish line 3 wide. Finished 3rd.

Race 4: Just rob & myself. Fun stuff although the same thing repeated itself again, where being the lead was the wrong spot to be, as you're exposed to the crazy super draft. Finished 2nd

Race 5: Chris joined us for the final race. Rob managed to get to the lead early while we slowed each other down. From there he had a winning lead and couldn't be caught. Finished 2nd.

Finishes:

Race 1: 1
Race 2: NA
Race 3: 3
Race 4: 2
Race 5: 2

These online problems are so frustrating. Seems to be putting drivers off competing :(

Could only do 2 races in SAR

In MNR I benefited from a couple of innocent mistakes I made that slightly disadvantaged Blair and later Wayne. And was a bit of a ruthless old bugger in the 4th race with Blair. Apologies if took it too far.

Unsettled servers still not giving us full fields so some races had only 3 or 4 people in them.

Race 1 - 1 /dc
Race 2 - 2 / 1
Race 3 - - / 1
Race 4 - - / 1
Race 5 - - / 1

Almost did not attend the MNR because I'm getting so pissed off with all of the disconnects……
But forever the optimist I thought 'one more try'…..sure enough race 1 stuck on the grid in spectator mode
Reset the PS3…..get myself together(did I mention I've started to drink heavily now) ready for race 2.
Only 3 MNR drivers on the grid-was room for more and then a disconnect on lap 3….
Sacrifice a small chicken out the back to appease the gods and get ready for race 3.
Only 3 MNR drivers on the grid-was room for more……the sacrifice worked as it was a great race!
Race 4 - 4 on the grid….Stone 'left us' to battle out the lower placings…which was fun but I do not have the
speed in the Lotus to take on the Clio's….and yes Peter that was a banzai moment-sorry had no control for
about 200metres before I hit you!

I'm starting to look into the possible reasons and solutions to the disconnects we are all getting.

Our loss too, W... miss you on the grid :grumpy:

PM me, mate, if you're gonna try and brave the network again this week - I'll jump on too

No comments on the half-points thingy? That's ok - it's not easy to know exactly what is right/best in this situation... arguments for both sides, I know... :)

It's enough for me to know that feeling isn't overly strong either way, so I can implement half-points without causing major upset 👍

Race 1) Got in with Stonemonkey in his f430. Finished 1st in GTR.

Race 2) This has never happened to me before  I chose the lotus 111r for this race, but when i started it was a yellow 111r tuned, and i had no control of the car. It was like i was passenger to another driver and the car was lagging and bouncing every where and was driving quite fast. I was behind vrrm for a while so it would be interesting to see what he saw and whos name was on top of the car. Eventually the car just came to a complete stop and i was forced to reset my ps3.

Race 3) Tried to connect twice with both times failing so called it a night.Maybey we could consider a re-run,like Tuesday or wed night??

Always up for racing with you C...will txt later.

@Devie - that is crazy, i was in that race but in a Clio - think the yellow lotus was a HR guy - if i could work out how that happened i would drive as you in every race!

I must have been the test dummy for co driver mode in GT5  Follow that vrrm  you crack me up Joe :)

Hey Devie,

I didn't see your name in a drivers list all night, and was particularly hoping you'd be around as wanted to have a go at you in the GTR. Likely an entirely futile prospect but thought I might be able to hang onto yr coat tails..... if I could stop laughing long enough. Lol, if we can race as Devie you steer Wayne, I'll navigate!

Half points? Whatever. Does this mean we are racing again tonight?

On another subject some of us had a bit of chat last night about the problems the game causes by allowing overly strong drafting. We got them to take the Rubber Band Effect out of the Pro level by whingeing about it. Would it be worth our while to start a discussion about the drafting issue?

I'd rather an accurate simulation that displays a drivers real skill, rather than have the game compensate for my lack of ability by setting drafting so strong that I get to hang onto and sometimes beat better drivers. Last night was a perfect example when I came from way back 3rd to beat Wayne & Blair at the line in the GT40. It ain't the full banana.

I doubt PD will give us much more on prologue, as all their focus would be on getting GT5 out. Just have to hope that in the final game it's fixed or even if they gave us an adjustable setting (low, realistic, max) would be nice.

I have a feeling they made it so strong to even out competition and make the racing more interesting. It's funny, considering the GT games are all about simulation and realistic things yet they've included a highly unrealistic drafting component.

As you say, I too would rather be doing well or not, based on how I'm driving, not because of a super draft where I can hang onto certain drivers. That's more than clear when you have random punters, who clearly can't drive well or guys just having some fun in generally uncompetitive cars, be able to stick with you thanks to the draft.

The other problem it raises is the one we saw last night & in the past. Driver's partly sabotaging, if that's the right word, their last couple of laps so as they've got the prime position at the end. Nothing wrong with that, I think we all do it and we're just taking advantage of flaws in the game but it does slightly ruin a great race when suddenly everybody stops making passes and backs off in the last lap or 2 so as to get the draft on the final straight.

I think its futile at this point in time. The Draft is part of the physics programming, and would require a patch to fix. The RBE on the other hand is a switch in the menu allowing you to turn it on/off as you desire (or in the case of Online racing, as PD desires)

I believe seeing as this was PD's first time into the online space for a retail game, they upped the draft effects to provide closer racing. Much like the RBE.

If you go back to the other games in the GT franchise, the draft is no where near as forgiving as the one in GT5Prologue, and I will assume that its a once off for the Prologue game, and may be optional in the full release of GT5.

Also to note, it wasn't a thread on here that got the RBE removed, one of the GTPlanet users had a face to face Q&A with KY and he asked him to remove RBE from Pro events, from that month onwards its been removed.

the game compensate for my lack of ability

So by saying that, you run with ABS=0?

Race 3 with the F40 had nothing to do with strategy for me - i was going as hard as i could the whole way! Rob's drive out of corners was way better than mine and even though it may have looked like i was stalking, those last few corners was all about trying to keep it together - three wide at the finish line was just the end result of a good clean hard race :)

As for your banana - i think you have got a couple of big hairy coconuts!

Tonight, sure, but just for giggles... I don't imagine the network will be in any better shape, so I wasn't really proposing a total re-run of MNR (unless at 8:02.30 there's a gazillion MNRers floating around, and we all can connect... if there's a whole bunch of us, we'll grab a chat room and see what's what).

I'll actually be on early, as I'm about to scoot off home - God bless the SES and their Storm Warning

Sorry about the early exit last night(gutted...again) the F40 race would have been good i'm sure - one minute i was following 6 red ferrari's ripping down the track the next i was staring at a black screen - could not get back online - router had lost connection and would not reset....i will be back!

I'd be gutted too, W... what a freakin' mess things have become... and for some individuals, like you, there's more crap than fan :ouch:

Yeh bloody appalling the way the system is working .... or rather not working at the moment.

Imagine what it will be like if it remains this unstable and GT5 comes out and suddenly the network is flooded with new drivers!

And the drafting will still be too strong. I betcha.

Rob
