Hmmm, let's see...
One of the first car magazines I ever bought had a four-way comparo between this, the Lexus GS, the E-Class, and the 5-series. I liked the look of this, and a neighbour had an awesome-looking deep green one that helped immensely. It still interests me more than its bland successor ever did.
I've no idea why, because I thought they were hideous for a long time. Suddenly, I like the absurdity of it, the completely un-designed rear end, and perhaps most of all, the
possibilities.
One of the ninetiesest cars ever.
Samba Green or nothing, of course.
Hey, Tiburon still is an awesome name for a car (though this is technically not one, but a UK-spec Coupe F2 Evo).
Look at this doofy-looking guy. It was pretty much a Japanese-built Marauder, and few people know what it is because it was only around for two years here.
I wanted one of these so badly when they first came out, a forbidden fruit that was raved about in CAR and EVO at the time. From my understanding, it didn't have many Honda bones left from the earlier alliance, but it's still an old-school hot hatch.
Everything I've read has pegged the 4200 the massively better car. The bigger, non-turbo engine was tractable where the turbo unit in this was peaky and unpredictable. The handling was improved with the bigger engine, too. But that new engine brought some boring old taillights to the party to appease less adventurous North American buyers (apparently), and I still think it looks ace with the boomerang lights.
Specifically, this model; the 3-door second-gen. From my understanding, there's a lot of commonality between this, the Corolla... and the Celica. So the idea has always been to take one and Frankenstein an All-Trac drivetrain into it, and maybe lower it a wee bit. Basically, out-Forester the Forester for sleeper-based sports car hunting
