It was very impressive. Weird but impressive. Would I buy it personally though? eh... probably not. It's just not my interest. :indiff:

Agreed. No offense to anyone here, but the whole 50's vibe from everything turned me away. I liked the game, but it's just set in a time that I hate playing in.

It's just not my interest I guess. Too RPG or Final Fantasy like in terms of wandering being told what to do? Not my cup of tea... The theme isn't what bothers me if it's in the 50's or art deco time.

I never care at all about reviews but this game is getting positive feedback everywhere I go and excellent reviews. It definetly has the possibility of being at least a contender for GOTY. Extremely innovative and for those that dont know, the demo only showed 2 plasmids. The full version has over 60 plasmids!!! Some inluding, freezing, telekinesis, decoy plasmids and much more. I am also going to guess that you can get a spider-like plasmid that allows you to crawl on the walls and ceilings but that is only a guess according to the trailers. There are enemy spider like splicers that altered their DNA to climb on walls so maybe you can do it too. Just a guess.

The game does have a very strong RPG flavour to it. I'm looking forward to customising the weapons and ammo as well as playing around with all the plasmids too (they call them "Plasmids", it's basically good ol' fashioned magic).

Another influence I see is Blade Runner in all the neon lights and the incidental music (Blade Runner was essentially a 50's Private Eye film noir set in the future). I think the best games will always remind you of other things due in part to the fact that it's been well made and structured and has a decent storyline.

I wouldn't let the 50's style turn you off. It at least makes a change from Halo-esque style aliens and CoD-like battlegrounds. Even the character designs which even though they remind me so, so much of Timesplitters is still refreshing. Maybe that turns some people off - the fact that it isn't some bald space marine with ultra-real heavy weapons fragging everything left, right and centre. Personally it's a blessing it's NOT like that, there's enough of them coming to both consoles before long. Bioshock looks like a breath of fresh air.

I'm also glad they haven't gone overboard with the special effects, particularly bloom. It's there, just, but nowhere near as bad as in some games. Even Gears of War suffers from over-exposure to blooming. My only criticism of the graphics is that the lighting is a little too dynamic - shadows are black even when there is a near-by light source. But I understand how that helps give the game it's atmosphere so it's not a problem

Anyway, it looks like it'll be my favourite FPS on the 360 this year.

Wow... I think the art-deco look makes it all the more compelling.
I couldn't agree with you more.

The environments have a certain "Titanic" art-deco luxury feel to them... although obviously decrepit and abandoned... much like how the great ship may have looked sitting on the bottom of the Pacific had it not been torn apart.

Even the storyline is reminiscent of Fritz Lang's epic Metropolis in the concept of a Utopian community that is really Dystopian.

This may in fact have been the inspiration for the story as well as the art-deco setting. It's great to see a FPS offer so much more than shot-to-kill non-stop action. 👍

For those interested in unlocking the "Hard" difficulty level in the demo, all you have to do is change the "Difficulty" setting to "Hard" in the "General Defaults" menu located in your Gamer Profile/Tag. 👍

Jesus. GOTY? Best reviewed game so far this generation?

Just finished playing the demo. EERIE. Very atmospheric, really gets that "you are there" feeling across. Great graphics, fan-frikkin'-tastic water effects. And the audio... wow.

My main problem has nothing to do with the game itself.. I'm just not that good at shooters. So it's still a "maybe, maybe not" purchase for me. I'd hate to be playing through it and get stuck or frustrated with it, like I tend to do with most other shooters.

This feels like a Doom 3 meets FEAR meets Condemned. I really liked all 3 of them, especially FEAR, and this game reminds me of that the most, except it has more story elements and less shooting.

Now the question is whether I get it on 360 or PC. Is there a demo out for PC as well? I just finished the demo on 360 and it was mindblowing. The most ridiculous thing was when the game first starts with the water, I thought it was a good cutscene, and then I realize it was in-game and I was like "oh my god".

How the **** is Bioshock a "10 out of 10"? It's just another FPS, seriously. I think games like The Darkness deserve a higher score if Bioshock is the "perfect game".

I call bull**** on all of those scores.

Somehow I doubt you would if it was a PS3 exclusive.

Read the reviews - the reason it's get glowing reviews is because it's not just another FPS.

From what I saw of the demo, it doesn't exactly look like a game that deserves 10/10.

Anyone got a link to an actual article instead of scores?

I don't think any game deserves 10/10.

Agreed. 👍

I don't think I've ever played a game that made me think, "This has everything!"

And while not trying to sound like a fanboy, the closest genre I've seen worthy, or near worthy of a perfect score is the GTA Series.

If you read the definition they give 10/10 on some of their websites, 10/10 doesn't mean the game is perfect.

Eurogamer's take on 10/10:

The perfect ten?

A score of ten reflects a game that, within the reviewer's estimation, is something you must buy: this is the message we're trying to convey. On a basic level it's almost certainly the best quality game ever seen within the context of its genre, and that's why Eurogamer doesn't dish them out very often. A score of 10 usually applies to less than a trio of games in any given year.

But all 10s are not born equal. For starters, you might consider that a ten in the RPG genre still isn't as appealing as an FPS that we scored an eight, or be mystified how we could score a football management game a nine when we only gave that survival-horror game you loved an eight. The best rule is to simply rate like with like, and use your own personal taste barometer to gauge whether the genre is of interest to you. Even so, if you're new to a particular genre then something scoring a ten is a very safe bet indeed. As a starting point, the message is you can't get a better game of this type.

Let us make absolutely clear that a 10 is not and probably never will be "the perfect game". There's always something criticisable about a game, however small.

A 10 will inspire the reviewer because it gets so many things correct. It will be something truly groundbreaking and aesthetically successful, be consistently enjoyable, get the balance right in difficulty terms, be technically very impressive, and be polished to a shine. It will leave the player in no doubt that they're playing something special right from the word go and will continue to inspire and amaze throughout. As we've said, this doesn't mean it's perfect, and we'll be sure to say where it goes wrong too, but maybe those niggles are just so minor that you can let it off. Look at anything under a microscope for long enough and you'll see the flaws. But would you kick a supermodel out of bed for farting?

Game Informer's:
Outstanding. A truly elite title that is nearly perfect in every way. This score is given out rarely and indicates a game that cannot be missed.

1up:
Anything we score in the 9-10 range is considered excellent

From Wikipedia on OXM:
A score of 10.0 is not considered perfect, but is called "Classic" and is considered to be of high quality. OXM does list a score of 11.0 (termed "Mecha Godzilla's Choice") and is considered perfect, however it has been said 11.0 is not attainable.

Seriously though, you're never going to get the perfect game, so why not using the best rating for something that's almost getting there? I don't recall seeing anything wrong with the demo apart from there is no shadow of yourself when you look at the floor!

Edit: Oh, the articles:

Game Informer
Games Radar
Euro Gamer
Game Reactor
IGN
1up
etc...

Solid, have you even played the demo? Or watched videos of the gameplay? I suggest you do that prior to accusing this game as being "just another FPS".

People really should'nt get hung up over numbers. It's a quick way to judge something perhaps but it's not the whole story. After all good movie critics don't score films (I know some do but GOOD critics don't) so if you want to know if you'd like it or not read the review/s.
Anyway, I'm sure hype has something to do with it and of course these reviewers have played the full game (I hope).
I was sceptical at first but I'd say I prefer Bioshock over Halo 3 at the moment. It's not wholly original (many elements can be found in other games, though not necessarily FPS ones) but it is exceedingly well made and it does make a nice change.

Edit: There's a very long and surprisingly good review at CVG.www.computerandvideogames.com
It's the PC review but it's just as relevant.

Wow I wonder if Halo and Halo 2 did not have mulitplayer(including co-op) if it would have gotten 7's and 8's..... That is the saving grave of the series. Bioshock does looks impressive.

I agree with that. The only thing that has kept me interrested in Halo 2 and Halo 3 is the multiplayer. Without that I probably would have played it once and got rid of it. The Halo 2 and Halo 3 multiplayer still is the best online multiplayer set up I have seen. I guess COD4 is going to have a very similar online set up as Halo 2 and Halo 3. Every game needs that online set up that Halo 2 and Halo 3 has. I still dont understand the Halo story at all. I thought the Halo 1 and Halo 2 single player campaign was just ok. But the multiplayer is beyond impressive.

It may not be "just another FPS", but I don't see it being anymore innovative than other FPS' that have mixed powers with guns.

My pre-order for the Collectors Edition on Game is at this status at the moment:

Yeah, Play.com are also selling Bioshock now, 7 days before it's official release date (August 24th in the UK). Naughty, naughty. Perhaps it's for online orders only. Whatever, it's not exactly fair practice. Didn't Best Buy do this in the US with Bioshock before changing their mind? Or was it changed for them?

Some Toys R Us stores decided to leak the game early because the BioShock release date wasn't even in their system. Of course, I don't think they're doing it anymore.

I did both. Would you think I would be stupid enough not too?

Reading the definitions of a "10 out of 10" rating from these reviewers are laughable. I guess a "perfect" game is 11 out of 10? These reviewers have advertisement concerns, not credibility. 👎

More of the same, another first person shooter.
