And we have a name:

Motor Trend reports that the upcoming Corvette supercar will sport the ZR1 moniker when it's finally unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Interchangeably dubbed "Blue Devil," "SS," and "Z07" by the automotive media until now, the car will feature a supercharged version of the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 introduced in the 2008 'Vette. Look for power and pricing significantly higher than that of the current top-dog Corvette Z06. Don't worry, the Z06 won't go away. The 505-horse car will simply become Corvette's midrange offering. Man, it's gonna be a party atmosphere in Cobo when they unveil this thing...

Que "We are the Champions!"

Yes! The ZR1 returns! The car that made me into the die-hard Chevy guy I am is finally back! Simply put, "Corvette SS" was too corny, and "Z07" would only confuse people with the Z06 already out there. Stick to model names that they've already used, it makes the most sense...

I don't care what its called, lets just see it on the 'ring already posting an official time!

YES! I knew it would be ZR-1! too bad that it's supercharged though, I kind of wanted to see NA 650bhp 'vette.. :D

Sweet, all along I knew it's either be called the ZR-1 or Grand Sport. SS just didn't suit a corvette, and Blue Devil was just a nickname because of GM's CEO Rick Wagoner's Duke University mascot....

ZR-1 is a good name (much better than "SS") but I'm surprised they didn't use a name with more historical significance, such as Grand Sport or one of the engine code models.

Given how close the comparison already is with the 600 BHP Viper, I can't imagine what a Corvette with an extra 150 BHP will do... Particularly if they've completely sorted out the suspension...

Heh. Ooops, Ford gave up on the GT.

America's Sportscar keeps getting better (or, at the very least, hairier!)

ZR1. Now that's a name I'll accept without question. Well, maybe one question: Why the heck did the press never even think of calling it a ZR1? The ZR1 is a performance icon. As will be this car.

L-88 would have been nice but not as many people have recognition of that name, ZL-1 would have been nice as well. ZR-1 is nice but I will always associate it with that Lotus 4 valve head...

ZL1 wouldn't have worked because it isn't a 427ci V8 under the hood. We could unofficially call the Z06 a ZL1 for that reason, but they chose not to. The ZR1 name is good because it brings back memories of when the car was a leader, not only in technology for the company, but performance as well. My guess is that this new ZR1 will showcase a lot of new stuff, just like its predecessor, similar to how the Corvette was always the testbed for new stuff (that changed over to Cadillac a while ago).

fap fap fap fap fap fap.....giggty giggty goo....alright!

Get your mind out of the gutter, I'm talking about the exhaust.

I was surprised about how audible the supercharger was. I just hope it goes without the butterfly exhaust, choosing to keep it open all the time...

Wow. That sounds great. Pretty loud, which is definitely a good thing. I can't wait to hear one in real life. I am a very poor V-8 deprived kid....

The only V-8 I remember riding in recently was a V-8 Tuareg. It was great. I can't imagine how much better this thing would compare!

Useless video. You heard almost nothing until the end--and even then it was probably 25% throttle. I'm left empty after watching that.

Oh could we be getting some more information on this beast in the next 48 hours?

Well, based on the fact that BadBoyVettes has what appears to be a shot of it in its transporter, we have to wonder if that might indeed be the case. Standard-issue Z06es don't wear hood camo, nor do they rock the serious power dome clearly hiding beneath it in the photo above. Let's go into 100% speculation mode here for a moment:

* BBV follows the C6.Rs from race to race.
* The C6.Rs are in Monterey for the ALMS season-ender at Laguna Seca.
* The photo above is likely the ZR1, and hence was also probably taken at Monterey.
* The Velocity Yellow finish on the depicted car matches the C6.Rs base color.
* We're going to go out on a limb and guess that GM's going to have the disguised ZR1 at the race.

Seriously, why not? Nissan generated mountains of buzz by trotting the masked GT-R out at places like Goodwood ahead of its reveal. Doing so with the ZR1 at an event where Corvette Racing is one of the major draws is a good way to get Corvette fans energized. Sure, we could be 100% wrong, but why else would there be a prettied-up, camouflaged car in a color that ties into the race team (and that hasn't been snapped by spy photogs yet, as far as we know) at Monterey?

Well, probably at Monterey. BadBoyVettes is such a tease. We'll have to see what happens over the weekend.

I hope so. I really want to see this car in action, as I'm certain it will be a performer. I think my big question is over the use of Magaride, if they did it of course, what kind of tires they're using this time, etc. Extra power means nothing if you can't apply it to the road...

Yes. The Z06 could have done so much better with different tires, as could the GT, and the Viper now does with it's new Michelins. The F1 Supercar just isn't that good of a tire, and that's the bottom line. I'd like to see a switch to the PS2, and then we could really see which car has the better chassis tuning--the SRT10 or the ZR1.

Frankly, I'm still going to put my money on the Viper as the most stable and consistent track car. There's only so much you can do with leaf springs. Lap times will probably be much lower for the Vette because of its new power, though. Thing's gonna be a monster!

How about them apples?

Turns out that the rumors were true and the Corvette ZR1 was in attendance at Laguna Seca Raceway this evening. The Blue Devil, however, was wearing the same Velocity Yellow color as its racing brethren, as well as the familiar black coverings we've seen in so many spy photos that cover the most interesting parts.

The ZR1, however, was not officially unveiled as some reports suggested. Motor Trend reports that the car was trotted out onto the track, did a couple hot laps, and was loaded back on the trailer and left, presumably back to Detroit. It was fairly uneventful and we didn't see anything we haven't seen before, but perhaps Motor Trend can sell its pics to Jalopnik for $1,000 and make some money for its trouble.

I don't think it's over done, all it is is a Z06 body with a cowl hood and sweet looking rims. This thing is going to be awesome for sure.

Yeah. Those rims are sweet. I guess I'm just amazed at how deep those creases and "valleys" in the bodywork are:eek:.

Video of the lap of the ZR-1 around Laguna Seca, as well as a close up of Corvette Racing driver Johnny O'Connell jumping into the car (while still half covered) before heading out on the track.

No audio of the car unfortunately (most of the video is shown from a pit wall monitor), but you can see that O'Connell is certainly driving the thing hard.

From the video timer, he did the lap in 1 minute 48 seconds. For comparison, the Corvette C6.R set pole time today of 1:19.

This thing really has me guessing about suspension. Its using great tires (PS2's) but like YSS said, what about Magnaride? Or what about some sort of AWD? On any Vette, not just the ZR1. Will Chevy ever put AWD in a Vette?
