I've seen a few Gran Coupes around in real life, and they look fantastic, lean and athletic. In comparison, the 5 series looks portly.

Yea, it's suppose to be a 4 door "coupe" but I really don't see any differences from a 4 door coupe and a 4 door sedan. Just wait a little bit and BMW will make a 2 door version of the 5 series and call it a 2 door sedan.

 Remember when words had specific meanings?

Pretty sure that BMW called both the E21 and E30 2 door models sedans, rather than coupes.

Pretty much. It's only recently that "coupe" was used exclusively for two doors. Two door sedans used to be called... "sedans" if the roofline was squared off instead of swooping.

Not that the definitions mean much nowadays. Many modern sedans would have qualified as four-door coupes under the old nomenclature.

The four-door 6 doesn't make much sense from a purely practical point of view, but it looks damn good. Which means it will sell, however impractical.

I think the new Gran Coupe looks better than either the A7 or the CLS - it just has that taut, drawn, timeless simplicity and elegance that the others can't quite carry off. In fact, I'd almost go so far as to say that the Gran Coupe could be added to the (very short) list of objectively beautiful cars. It just looks 'right'.

It's definitely the best BMW looks-wise since the dearly departed 8-Series, for sure.

I know companies have been called car 2 door sedans for a long time. I was somewhat joking cause the 5 is the supposed to be the sedan and the 6 the coupe, and they made a "sedan" version of the 6 called it a coupe so if they make a "coupe" version of the 5 they call it a sedan.

I thought it had to with do with the size of the rear seating to classify it as a coupe or sedan.

Rear seat size is iffy. Otherwise, you could call a Sentra a Saloon.

Of course, they already did, so...
