If it is on Monday, I'll be watching football.

The team I grew up following is finally competitive, and I hardly get to see them anymore.

For any other night, Roadsters @ Sarthe/Weather Change ?

Since no one else has thrown out a suggestion, here's mine; 90's Evo's vs STi's.

Sure, haven't raced there in a while.

* 90's EVO or STi
* Sport Soft Tires
* Suzuka

Great race last night guys! It sounds like everyone had fun. If I'm going to spend 1.5hrs in one race, I'd much rather spend it bumper to bumper than separated by 10+ seconds. I know it ends up coming down to the last pit stop, but everyone except Syd pitted on the same lap. Those scoobies were faster down the straight so you should have had no trouble catching back up to me.

I'm not sure if I'll be available to race next Monday, but we should come up with another competitve theme anyway. You guys can run without me.

Also, we chatted briefly about making this a series. Do you think there would be enough interest to fill the entire grid...or would people get disinterested when they realize it comes down to the final laps of the race and how well you can hold off your opponents?

Maybe if you get a point for every lap you lead, a point for every car you pass (that's not in the pits) and five points for the fastest lap it wouldn't be just about the last pit and last few laps.

Wow, that's a great idea! We'd have to invite Garris so he can tally up the results :P

Yeah, I realized the amount of work involved in that after I wrote the comment.

I do agree that that would be the only way a series like this would be fun. But yes, an hour and a half of watching a race that took an hour and a half to run!

I think it would be fun regardless. When all the drivers on the track are in contention, it can make for some very intense racing. The driver out front is obviously at a disadvantage since he doesn't get any boost and ends up being a sitting duck...but we could resolve that by making 1st and 2nd place equal points.

Most laps lead and a point for leading a lap isn't too hard to calculate by zipping through the replay to see who is out front at the start of each lap.

With the new fastforward, that isn't hard.

Trying to calculate passes is. But, we don't have to do that at all.

Who won? Was it another case where a driver could pit 9 times and end up less than 2 seconds from first like Madrid?

It took between 2-4 laps to catch the leaders after a pit stop. So yes, the number of pit stops did not matter as long as you could string together clean laps and catch up.

By the end I think there were 4 cars on the track. Lap 29 Ssyd pitted and by lap 31 he caught everyone else. We had a massive pileup in the esses and the other 3 drivers had to pit. Then we had a car get jammed in pit road. We all caught up to Ssyd around lap 33 and I had the lead by lap 34. I pulled a 1 second gap over the next two laps to win the race.

My EVO wasn't fast enough to draft pass when tires were equal but I had a faster line through the esses.

I agree it's a lot of fun and it really does come down to the last pit stop. I was planning on pitting with 4 laps to go. I dropped 2 tires, spun, and collected Huyler with like 6 to go. I pitted, then drove very conservatively to save tires and was back with the pack with 3 to go. I don't even remember where I finished, but it was a blast! Of course, it's a whole new ballgame now with the new tire-wear.

Yeah, there might be some additional strategy, but from my initial testing soft tires with more frequent pit stops will beat hard tires with fewer pit stops on most tracks. The only exceptions will probably be the superspeedways (daytona, indy, high-speed ring).

Tire wear will severely penalize any car/tune that causes tires to go into the red. soft tires will wear down in a matter of seconds if you do burnouts. This of course means that FF cars are even more screwed than before.

Yeah I wasn't sure how big a factor the tire wear would be so I pitted too early but the boost let me catch up fairly quickly.

I really like the sound of the points system for the series. My suggestion would be that since these races are decided near the end, why not break them up into two shorter races for the series? Racing bumper to bumper for an hour and a half is fun in a spot race but for the sake of long-term competition, I think it would be better to have two races scored independently. Like some of the touring car series out there do. You also have to give points for position - I'm sure it was implied - nobody mentioned it yet.

I'm thinking a thirty minute practice/qualifying to get everyone in the room and ready followed by two roughly forty minute races with a ten minute break in between (with no cars allowed on track?). That would make for a two hour event.

I like BTCC's point system. Points for position, 1 point for pole position in the first race, 1 point for fastest lap in each race and 1 point for having lead a lap in each race. In their old format for 10 drivers, the points went 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 plus bonus points. Applied to our series as I've suggested, a driver could earn a maximum 37 points over the course of two races. Except for ours because it's going to be so competitive, we should probably bump the points for leading a lap up to 2 or 3 to make for a stronger incentive.

Also, the series should be limited to 10 or 12 drivers because there was enough bumping and banging with 6 people last night.

I don't think I'm going to make it on tonight. Go ahead without me though, and we'll plan something for next Monday.

Yeah, I forgot we did that so recently. Yeah, I don't know why I put CS, I meant SS.

Racing Tonight? Not that I can make it, but I'd be willing to put off dinner and catching up with my DVR for a decent turn out on a track I like.
