"Vette vs Viper"

Stage 1: Stock
For this first stage, I tested each car fresh from the dealer, only Sports Soft tires were changed. No other upgrades or weight reduction, no adjustments allowed (not even brake bias). The gearing seemed to be what won out here. Those with transmissions that actually got good use out of high gear did better. Most however, got little use out of high gear and some never even touched high gear.

Anniversary Edition's were a last minute add on. Had to use (start) a backup account to ensure the were stock. Even though the weight may be slightly lower and they do have sports exhaust added. This addition did change the top of the leaderboard and the fastest car. Just keep that in mind.

"Vette vs Viper"

Stage 2: Head to Head
Corvettes vs Vipers, covering varying pp levels from 525-600. Cars were not tested one after the other, instead, all cars were added to my favorites. They were then tested according to model year, and all versions of each model were tested before moving on to the next model. For example, the '99 Viper GTS was tested on both tracks at 525pp (and at Willow Springs to be added to that leader board), then tested at 550pp (and at Ascari for that leader board). I then moved on to the next car. Even if a tune was not in this battle, each tune was tested at Indy Road Course and that will make up Stage 3. All cars were given 5 laps on each track. 1 point for fastest lap at each track(faster time in italics), 1 point for total time on both. I will give the split difference(faster car by how much). All testing done on Sports Soft tires.

Note: IRC = Indy Road Course, BGR = Bowling Green Raceway.

That's quite the project you're working on there & I'm always interested in methodical testing results so I'll be watching closely.

Some of the cars you've listed, I have already tested in completely stock form on SH tyres at the Mother of all test tracks, the famed Nordschleife. When I get the chance, I'll post the relevant models' times for comparison. One thing is for sure, in stock form it's certainly a case of horses for courses as when I compared model against model around the Ring, some sectors favoured some cars whereas other sectors were the opposite.

Very true indeed, I felt a stock test was needed and HSR reverse gives a challenge coming out of the tunnel. Some were better in the slow section but lost it on the main straight due to gearing. Overall, ZR1 was fantastic, but Vipers were the stars.

Exactly. Take the C6 Vettes for example. The ZR1 has a killer engine & is matched to a magnificent set of gearbox ratios with something for all occasions.
The Z06 on the other hand has a great engine too but imagine for a second just how much better that car would be with the ZR1 gearbox. No more dying in 6th gear.
I could easily use the same argument for the C7 with it's 7 speed 'box. After testing that car at the SS10 & never needing to select 7th, I decided to re-pack the box so that when flat out, it can't quite reach the redline in 7th. The difference is light years apart. I call this version my take on a hypothetical C7 Grandsport.
The same problem exists with our homegrown Holdens present in the game. Great cars until you go for 6th gear & then you're left wondering.

Most Vipers are similar but get more out of 6th. Like the ZR1, pulls all the way through. That 13 GTS changed my feelings on the Viper.

As previously mentioned, I've tested some of the vehicles in your latest project around the Nordschleife using a DS3 with manual transmission on SH tyres with no driving aids, in Arcade Mode with grip set to real.
Here are the times:

C6 Corvette ZR1 7:13:559
Viper SRT10 ACR 7:18:157
Viper GTS 2013 7:20:397
C6 Corvette Z06 7:21:717
C7 Corvette 7:23:930

And, just for interest:

Shelby GT500 7:35:066
2010 Camaro 7:38:790
Cadillac CTS-V 7:42:427
Ford Boss 302 7:42:568

The GT500 proves power isn't the answer to everything if it corners like a Taxi.
There is probably more time left in each car but these laps were done at around the pace the factory test drivers cut their laps. If it goes wrong, they tweak the 2-way radio back to base & don't have to pay the repair bill.

Nice lap times 👍. Good info:D

Oh, personally I think Vettes are better around corners, Vipers are just beasts in a straight and on exits!
My thoughts exactly, then I ran these tests and found a few Vipers that can corner as well. GTS 13, and the Launch Edition GTS, ACR with its down force not so bad either. Still, I'm a Chevy guy so my heart is with the Bowtie Vettes! :D :sly:

Stage 3: Free-for-all!

For this stage, all cars were given 5 laps on Sports Soft tires at Indy Road Course, times from the Head to Head battle are used for those tunes. The rest, are as tuned in this garage. Some did receive a minor final gear adjustment although it was not optimal, just enough that they were not bouncing of the rev limiter. Some could have used more, some less, so times could have been slightly different had I adjusted each, but once you see how many times there are, you will see that was not possible and this kept it fair.

**Keep in mind, these are my tunes built for the way I drive and limited to what grip PD gives each car. I am a Chevy guy, but did my best to remove any bias and some cars may have gotten an extra lap or two, they generally speaking were Vipers to be even more unbiased.

Some of those lap times are extremely close.
Have you kept the ghost replays as I'm sure comparing some of the cars would be very interesting.

No, I actually did not want to use a different cars ghost so the few I did save I deleted.

There are still 2 SS tunes that I meant to test but missed. Realized it when posting.
And of course, if you look closely, there are still 2 Race cars times to add as well. :sly:

Still 5 more stages to post, but the final is still a work in progress. Another 3-4 hours of testing likely. Seems like it's taking forever. Stage 3, 50 tunes, 5 laps each at roughly 10 minutes per tune with loading time/changing cars/setting grip to real and always double checking that TC is at 0. And that's just that stage, not including the other 2 already posted, or the other 5 not yet posted. You can see how, with tuning to start, this has taken months to complete. But it's amazing how the times are close, and 2 630 flat floor cars had the same time even though they were tested days apart. :D

Stage 4: Team Battle

This will be the first of three Team Battles. For this one, the cars pictured above were used at 600pp on Racing Hard tires. Each has flat floor installed and the rear down force was set to 15 except for the ACR which was left as stock. I changed tracks as I went along, but the original plan was to do three tracks with adjustable final gear. But I dropped the idea and instead retested each to reset transmissions. They would each now not blink the rev limiter any more, so this meant a quick 2-3 lap test at more than one track. But should have kept thinks fair as adjusting the final gear as much as I was going to seemed to have an adverse effect helping some but hurting others too much. I enjoyed this test some much, I went back and even added an extra (4th) track.
This will be a points based championship style competition, each car will have it's points totaled to find the champion tune. Each team will then have their points totaled to find the winning team.

Enjoy!

So after all that testing, the '08 Viper & '04 Vette are inseparable on 39 points each
Amazing.

On another sort of related note, I took the '04 Vette for a test session at the Nordschleife as it was missing from my the test results I posted here earlier.
Same tyres & same testing conditions produced a 7:35:710.
That puts it less than seven tenths behind the Shelby GT500 and just over 3 seconds in front of the '10 Camaro.

I'm very tempted to test the premium classic Muscle Cars on the Nordschleife too using their original gearbox ratios but with taller final drive/diff ratios so that they're not bouncing off the rev limiter for the majority of the lap.

I thought the ACR with its down force would perform better, but I guess the others were just that much better. The 04 Z06 is not as good as the tunes that finished ahead of it.

The second Team Battle, same rules and points system as the first. All cars at 630pp with flat floors and tuned to 1250kg. The tracks are slightly different however, and for two of the tracks, Racing Medium tires were used. Each track had a different testing order (as did the first battle) and I usually did fastest to the slowest. There was a curve ball during testing, but that will be explained later.

Awesome! Easily beats Ia 600pp race cars and looks good doing it. I chose the low profile "special" wing and already had a rigidity improvement installed. I'm not sure if it hurt anything, maybe the rigidity added a tad more understeer here and there?

I've been enjoying your CTS-V ,Camaro SS Touring Car and GT-R Touring Cars a lot as well. I love what you do with the higher PP cars. Just thought I'd stop in to give a 👍

Well thank you very much, I am a Chevy guy but that Viper puts a smile on my face. The 580pp tune (which I lowered to 575pp), the 600 and 630 flat floor versions are more competitive than all the other Vipers. Rear wing is cosmetic and which one does not matter, my 575pp has the special blade style on it. Not quite sure what improved rigidity would do, though my guess would be tighter in the corners.

A Chevy guy!? I never would have guessed. :sly:
Have you been to the Mid America Motorworks in Effingham, IL? If you're ever on that part of I-57, it's worth the stop for any car guy but especially if you like fast Chevy's. There is an amazing collection on display to the public.

I'll be sure to try those other versions. I may end up buying another '13 Viper and forego the rigidity improvement this time. The winning tune of the FITT Viper challenge had called for it and that tune just didn't agree with me for some reason. Do you prefer these Vipers or the Launch Edition?

Honestly, I think they are the same. I purposely tuned them with different power parts. I also tried slightly different suspension settings.

And sorry but no, been up and down the east coast but never to the mid west.

What if? - Part 1

23779617945_fc285a632d.jpg

My original plan was to run the ACR at 600pp and 630pp with flat floors and the Viper GTS R Concept '00 at 600pp on RH with the Race Cars. I even thought of building a 630pp Concept Viper and C5R to compete with the Z06 LM and the Team Oreca #51 (oops, gave away the next stage there didn't I).
But, while testing the 630pp flat floor cars, during the third track it became obvious that the pp hit the ACR was taking for both flat floor and down force was rendering it completely noncompetitve. So I had a few choices, A) remove the ACR and replace it with the Concept Viper, B) leave it and watch it get crushed, C) replace it with a non flat floor ACR. I chose option A. I then replaced the Concept ACR in the 600pp Race Cars with the ACR at 600pp without a flat floor. Horsepower was similar and having front and rear downforce seemed to make sense. And since the Concept Viper seemingly comes with a flat floor.....well, that's what I was going to do.

But what if I had not made any changes? I will be giving out the results for those three "What if's" before moving on to the final two stages. So here are the results for the 630pp flat floors had I LEFT the ACR in.

What if?: Part II

23152773713_837bd7934a.jpg

Next what if scenario, I removed the ACR flat floor from the 630pp, but should I for the 600pp? I did not. The reason being that I did not feel it was that far behind and having built two flat floor ACRs, I felt at least one of them needed to be used even though the 600pp was used in the Head to Head stage. But what would the results looked like if I had replaced it with the Viper Concept R?

What if?: Part III

23697200161_d8832c71aa.jpg

Final What if?, I chose to use the ACR at 600pp (with out flat floor) against the other 600pp race cars. The reason, it has downforce front and rear (though non-adjustable) whereas the Concept Viper has a bunch of rear only and is heavier. I also felt it could be faster depending on the track, and this way one flat floor was used and one each of the ACR and Concept Viper. But what if I had used the GTS R Concept instead?

"Vette vs Viper"

Stage 7: One on One

23753530026_94cc8af69d_z.jpg

For this stage, the tune for the Z06 Race Car is old and untouched, the Viper is new. Both cars were tested on multiple tracks and used Racing Hard and Medium tires, and tuned to 630pp. Each car was given 5 laps unless it beat the lap of the other car. Generally speaking, fastest car from the previous track was up first, meaning the Vette was almost always up first. Expected more from the Vette but it could just be my tune for it. Or that the Vette is just a better car at this pp level.
