It's not weird that they'd used "Black" instead of "soft", because something like 6B or 8B are actually darker than an H, H being hella gray.

You see, I had to draw a background to suit the action picture...

Well then don't make it look like a it was thrown in at the last minute because it kills the drawing for me. You don't have to fill in every space of the paper. You can always stylize by drawing a few strands of grass here and there. That alone already will give the impression of the landscape.

Why don't my drawings look like this? Is it because I'm using a crappy scanner? Or do I need to use a wider range of pencils/press harder to make darker tones?

Like I said before, you're using HB pencils and smudging for midtone fills. Do you see how dark the shadows are on the car? There's actually black and white in the drawing. Your drawings don't have that level of sharpness or contrast.

With that grill it looks almost like a Bizzarinni, I love it!

Cheers Logan, glad you like it 👍, thought to myself "Bizzarinni???" (when you mentioned it)... googled it, and you're spot-on, it doe's bare a canny resemblance to the front grill (might have to do a Bizz version once iv'e finished the MG version), also with a few adjustments i think it could pass as an Alfa too, though i was aiming for that kind-of late 70's MG Midget plastic grill shape.

I'm confused... can anybody list all the pencil types there is from softest to hardest and what effects they have on car drawings if possible? I'm considering to buy more pencils for my drawings but I don't know which ones I should get. I have a HB and a 2H pencil, whatever that means.

Sketch with pens - that way you'll be more confident with your lines. Afterwards you can shade with soft pencils 2B-6B would be more than enough.

Have a go at the 2014 Lotus Esprit. In the rain would be a unique pic.

Is that a photo or a drawing/photoshopped image?, reason i ask is the perspective seems a little off, it seems to have a bit of a fish-eye lens appearance to it, nice pic though regardless... kind of reminds me of those moody 'Athena' posters of Countach's and Testarossa's i used to put on my bedroom wall when i was a kid.

Decided to do a fairly quickish experimental pic (about an hour), was basically browsing through this weeks Auto Express mag, and came across a nice pic of the new Renault Alpine thingy, so thought i'd do my best to copy the setting to a certain degree.. kind of copied the car a wee bit (by hand, same with the background) but didn't intend to copy it fully, i know it looks really rushed and rough, but i intend to do a 2nd higher quality version with a better car design.. it's mainly a sort of exercise in light source and background for me (1 of my weakest area's).

Cheers man 👍, diggin the JDM car pic you did aswell, would look better if the back edge of the front wheel arch didn't hide the front wheel though, but that asides i can already see an improvement in your work 👍.

Thanks, How can i improve this gt2?

It looks like a good foundation sketch to work on, the only thing i would adjust is the angle of the rear wheel, you could probably get away with making the rounded peak of the rear wheel arch more centered as apposed to making it peak with a rear bias, (i know it's not always easy but it comes with practice), what i find is a helpful tip, is to draw the wheels 1st and the arches 2nd.

When shading start off lightly and gradually build up the tones, try not to concentrate on 1 area specifically, do the whole thing gradually.

[EDIT]

Also think about where you want your light source to come from, i would either suggest the light coming from the near side (the side that your eyes are looking at the view of the car from), or from behind the cars other side... if you bare with me i'll do a quick sketch to demonstrate if that helps.

Well I've just ordered loads of pencils, rubbers and sharpeners off Amazon and they include much more than just HB pencils. Hopefully i should be able to get much more realistic looking drawings from now. By the way, how does my F40 drawing look so far? Better than my GT-R in terms of shading?:

Almost there, just need to add shade and tone

You've only submitted three or so drawings so far, but I can see that you have already improved on the car's form in such a small period of time. Amazing.

This shading looks alot more realistic then the gt-r, you can see that the light is reflecting of one point of the car and as it travels it gets gradually darker, well done.

I know it's really crappy , but i'm sure you'll understand the general idea, blue represents the darker tones, yellow represents the lighter areas.... it's far from exact and probably wrong in some area's and i would have liked to go into more detail, but my photoshops chugging at the moment (drawing and the strokes weren't showing up until 5secs later :grumpy:, anyway, i hope it helps a bit.

[EDIT], You beat me to it, looks similar to what i tried to do with he car at the bottom of the pic. Looking good :)

^ Well that was useful thanks!

Added tone, any idea's of scenery?

Parked on a race track maybe? And thank you for your feedback on my F40 drawing so far. Just a suggestion, but maybe you would want to add more contrast to your drawing to make it look more realistic. I'm sure you will get better at art a lot quicker if you experiment with different things until it looks just right.

Sorry but racetrack seems to difficult, i've gone with a countryside type of theme.

See that's what I was talking about when I said you don't need to communicate every little detail to depict that the car is on a track.

No. I was using your drawing as an example of hat I said earlier to MSTER.
