Yep, it was great to finally be on track with you guys again. Isn't it strange how we used to not be able to keep Randoms out but not even one entreated the room last night? Probably because we weren't using racing tires. :dopey:

I plan on being off and on the ought the day, probably crash some lobbies or try to open one. Feel free to join.

Anyone heard this tragedy yet? Here's a link to some audio of a 2014 Renault F1 engine using the upcoming regulations that require 1.6L Turbo V6... Rather terrible sounding if I do say so myself! :grumpy:

Sounds like it would be ok at higher RPM's, like the 18k they hit now. Now it sounds like an Indy Car. 👎

I remember hearing the V10's in person for the first time at Indianapolis... Thought I was going to have a crisis!

I'm doing the Le Mans Classic today in a Jaguar. 3 and a half hours of racing. Doubt I'll feel like joining you guys afterwards if you do anything.

I'm gonna jump on in a few and mosey around, see what's happening. I should still be on after 2.

Nah, you could've fried an egg on my forehead. Surface temperatures were over 55C and I had trouble keeping the tyres under 45C. Back in the air conditioned pub now.

Well, I was online most of the weekend and kept an eye on the ORCA friends list but rarely saw anybody online. A few of us had a go Friday night but the rest of the weekend was a ghost town. So, I don't see any real point in continuing with the Car of the Month thing since there would only ever be a 3 or 4 of us showing up. Looking around the online events section, most of it is desolate so attempting any kind of regularly scheduled format is probably an effort in futility at this point.

However, I ventured into some public rooms and once I found a room with tires restricted to less than racing (which was a task in and of itself) I actually found some decent racing. So I'm probably going to start up some type of public room program, it will be centered in the GTP Clubs section so we can attract as many GTP racers as possible but it will be open to the public so we can hopefully get a few more participants (trouble makers will be dealt with swiftly). It will be open to everyone on GTP, I'm sure there are still plenty of us on here wanting to race and I'm hoping to provide a central place for us to congregate for some casual racing.

It will be as simple as possible so people can just show up and race without needing to prep or tune a car before hand. I spent time this weekend testing cars from the recommended garage to find some good pairings and I'll continue with this to create a master list of cars that pair well together (we can't just go by PP values, some cars turn the same lap times but are 10-15pp apart). There will be a thread that has recommended pairings so anybody can create a room and select cars to go racing. We also had success with the vintage Japanese cars by just setting a PP and drivetrain restriction so that type of system will be an option too. It will all be listed eventually and perhaps some loose themes to guide us. My hope is that we'll have a system that anyone could use to open a public room, using a consistent name so people will be able to spot it, possibly on a daily/nightly basis. It seems that most of the yahoo's have abandoned the game and I'd bet a good portion of the people still browsing the lobbies are die-hards that actually want some good racing, hopefully we can attract them and get a regular thing going.

I'll have lobbies open over the next week or two so I can experiment and find a nice foundation to build from, and I'll probably pop into some random lobbies to see how other people are doing things. If you see me on and in a room, feel free to follow me in. I plan on being online the next three evenings for sure.

I was watching the 24 hours of le mans doing research on building a new server. Now I'm waiting on the parts.

GT5 online racers are a dieing breed, getting a room with 10+ on less than racing tires and 600PP is hard now. GT6 will bring some people back for sure.

Personally I really think 1 car for everyone from the recommended list is the best bet. So many cars never get used on the list and it saves time finding matching combos (personal I don't think there are more than 3).

Probably so. I don't have a ton of experience with the recommended garage so I'm just kind of educating myself on it. When looking at the list you see several cars that are within 1-3pp of each other and your natural thought is "ooo, those should race well together!" but in true GT fashion they can be 1-2 seconds different from each other. But there are some that should pair up nicely that aren't so obvious, which is why I figured I'd do some testing to find out if there are any good matches.

Example: the Jag XKR '10 (512pp), TVR Tamora '02 (498pp) and BMW M3 Coupe '07 (488pp), all on SM tires were returning lap times within .2 seconds of each other (the Jag and BMW were almost dead even) but all had very different driving styles. Could be a good matchup that we normally wouldn't notice based on the gap in PP.

I was absent this weekend, but I'll be round this evening at times. I'll drive anything, obviously. Fun to run with you folks again Friday night. We actually had NC and I think Sagaris join right at the end of the session when the rest of the group was retiring. If we stayed on a little later we might've had a half dozen or so.

I can help with this if you require. The WRX/Evo combination comes to mind as one that in theory should be tight(I think 2PP differential) but it was evident that they turned considerably different lap times at Indy. Certain cars have certain strengths that would allow them to run similar times on one track but very different times on another. Lotus and Corvettes can run similar times on a medium speed track, especially with tighter sections, but on a big course like the ring the Vette is going to run away. Tyre wear also slows cars down at different rates depending on car weight and loading.

Lets do some recommended cars at Nurb tonight!!!! :)

Probably. I'm gonna stick my head in the DeadNutz lounge around 7:30 but it looks like it will only be me and Saga, so we'll probably bail and have a lounge open by 8:10pm EST.

You thinking what I'm thinking?? Art Morrison Vette and the Shelby Cobra........at The 'Ring?? :nervous: :scared: :nervous:

You might be surprised. Despite the Cobra topping at ~150 I was able to keep much of the field within sight last week. I think everyone else was in ISF RMs. I'm in.

If nobody else shows up, that sounds good. And that'll probably be the case.

^ I think the only other two people who show up already said they can't make it tonight, so it probably will be the case. We'll give it the old college try though!

The Shelby scares me, on any track...........but in a good way. :)

Here's a crash course in the tractor. I mean Cobra.

It's soft, so no jerky inputs. Slowly apply the brake or the nose will dive and the rear will be so light that turning in will cause a spin. The car has a lot of torque, so don't go banging gears when you don't need to. It's easier to drive and has plenty of torque in the mid-rpm range, so you can concentrate on your driving rather than pleasing the finicky spin doctor under the hood. Turn the brakes down.

It's a tractor. It's 1920s technology. Seriously. It's like the Harley Davidson of sports cars. Because of this the rear does not have optimal movement and as such you must maintain some type of throttle in order for the car to behave neutral. It is by nature a pushy car steady state. Most people never notice this because they're too busy nose-diving too loose upon entry and powersliding out of it. Slow all your inputs down, trailbrake only slightly and let it coast for a moment once the nose has turned in. Once it takes a set you feel the understeer start, which is when you then pickup the throttle, lightly, and the car will do what it is supposed to. It's like driving anything, you need to do what it wants to do and drive it the way it needs. You may feel like you're leaving time on the table, but really that's all it has to give. It's an old car.

For me it's not so much "jerky" inputs, it's large inputs. Very little steering is needed.
Short shift, all the time. It has more power than grip.

Yep.

I think this car is fastest when you steer the car with the gas and corner exit speed is the key.

Eek! I was just kidding, but I guess I've created a monster! I've only driven the Shelby a couple times and the Morrison Vette once. They appear evenly matched based on PP, doesn't mean they actually are though. But, they both have open tops which is always a treat at the Ring. :dopey:
