Probably the part where the entire VGT program jumped the shark in terms of any long term relevance.
Don't be like that, man. The whole point behind the VGT project was to create visions of the future of racing. GM just has a vision that is absolutely staggering.

Not a fan of it...

get it? fan? (Fan car??)
I see what you did there!

Normally I'm not a fan of such an eccentric design, but Chaparral is the one company who gets the pass. Their cars were so outrageous and innovative back in the day that they looked as different to the other cars on the track as this does to the other VGT's in the game.

Did you know that even though Colin Chapman is credited for his innovation of side skirts on the Lotus F1 cars, it was actually Chaparral that first put side skirts on a race car?

You think that? It's just a coffee break from all the other project cars. Someone had to go crazy, might as well be GM doing it.

For all the talk of how momentous of an achievement PD managed with linking real world professional car design studios with a video game company, I think the obviously-made-for-a-videogame car with the obviously-chosen-because-it-sounds-cool propulsion system that might as well be a drawing on a kids lunch napkin (with descriptions to match) stretches the credibility of the program to the breaking point, yes. This is also the entry using the name of a storied racing team known for being on the bleeding edge of just out of grasp technology; and instead of being some sort of X1 or Delta Wing-esque idea that changes how we think cars need to be designed for racing purposes (which would fit well with Chaparral's history since Chaparral were leading innovators in aerodynamic work) it looks and is described as something that Studio Liverpool might have made 6 years ago for Wipeout HD but never ended up including in the final game.

Watching the video again.

I notice the name on the Chaparral, "Pete Aron" is the name of James Garner's character in Grand Prix.

Also on the photos, Jim Hall's name on the Chaparral.

I'm afraid I'm kind of with you on this one. I'm usually the one who defends cars like the VGTs and the Red Bulls for being realistic but I feel they stretched a little with the Chaparral. If you look a car with those specs it seems like something out of a science fiction movie. The tecnologies they listed are still in very early research stages. This car was obviously made for a game.

That being said, I'm not the one who's going to hate on the car because it's too close to being sci fi. Yes they looked very far in the future (maybe too much), but this will not destroy the game for me. I'll still drive it and enjoy it. It seems it will be as fast as the Red Bull fan cars. It's nice that they will have a competition now. But you can be certain of one thing: this car will be hated just as, if not more than the Red Bull cars when it is released.

I like how the body is cut on the side behind the front wheel, make it look like it's numbered 666 instead of 66, lol. :dopey:

ok, the angle of the picture helps, but it's cool anyway.

Sometimes if you are hated... you are doing something right.

Jim Hall is not stranger to hatred... most of his IRL creations were hated, because they won.

Leave it to the 'Muricans to come up with something this insane.

I hope when I drive this, "flash low/high beams" mean Laser beams, because this looks like a spacecraft. Spacecrafts have laser guns, and since there's no rules doesn't mean you can't shoot cars off the track. :sly:

I thought it was 666 at first. But turns out it's just 66.

Is this car.... zero-wheel-drive because of the laser?
I don't know how the system is supposed to work. Apparently some batteries power a laser and some air generator or something and the laser provides thrust. So maybe the wheels aren't directly driven. I'm not sure.

And judging by the video, it also comes in black.:mischievous:👍
Too bad it probably won't come in cyan.

So BMW and Audi have real cars with laser headlights, and now we have a fictional car with laser power.

Jim Hall's cars were hated mostly because his (mostly) independent team's innovative thinking threatened the balance of power held by the bigger teams that could otherwise (and almost always did) just outspend him to rack up wins instead. His cars rarely actually won.

This car doesn't really have anything to do with that; not the least of which being because it is a design study by GM (usually the biggest team there is) with the Chaparral name put on it.

Are those ailerons on the car? I keep hearing about active aerodynamics. I wonder if that's how the driver is supposed to steer. I don't see any photo where the wheels appear to be angled as if turning.

I liked that nod to a talented actor and sportsman. My mom was devastated when she heard that he passed.

I wonder how the car will sound.

True, I tottaly agree with you. But the reason why I said that was because this car looks to be as fast as the Red Bull. And being a VGT I guess we'll get an event were we will get it for free. So a lot of people will have one. And the trolls online are going to use it. Everyone then hates the car. And the history repeats itself.

You see, I won't hate this car. I'm looking forward to it. But looking back at GT5, if the car is as fast as they made it look, I unfortunately don't see how things will be different this time.

It's seems to be like a plane turbine. So yes, it's essencially a "no wheel drive".
The car appears to use ablative laser technology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_propulsion
Here's a video:
