Childhood Dream Cars?

I dreamed of owning a big ass American V8 powered car.

Growing up in the later 80's and early 90's, I think my "childhood dream vehicles" would reflect the era pretty well.

Toyota Pickup (Hilux/Tacoma), Back to the Future sealed the deal on this for me.

Ha! I was born in 1982 and always wanted an 80's Toyota 4x4 and I finally got a 1986 Toyota 4x4 SR5 when I was 17 and still have it to this day even after 16 years and over 300K miles. I even painted the inside of the rims black as an ode to the Back to the Future truck although that one was 1985 with a solid front axle. Mine was the first year if independant front suspension.

For other childhood dream cars, my favorite from childhood was a 1987 Ferrari F40

F40ferarri20090509.jpg

The usual suspects of Lamborghinis, the Diablo in particular from sitting in a VT at Adelaide International Motor Show 1996, which also introduced me to the Italdesign Cala:

The Viper GTS was also a big one of mine until the Murcielago arrived in 2002.

Now though my only real unobtanium dream car is one of these:

Always was pretty eclectic for me as a kid. Never was really supercar heavy, with two exceptions:

Ferrari-Testarossa_4.jpg

And only that one. I loathe the 512M and I can barely stand the changes to the 512TR.

ferrari-f50-4.jpg

The F40 I understood people loved, but I loved the F50. So purposeful. Plus Ferrari always did their old press photos by surrounding it with F1 cars.

I can still roughly remember the anecdote Motor Trend gave it in 1998. "It sits so low, you'll have to order takeout by height. 'Hi, do you have anything like a Big Mac, but shorter?'"

This is actually a bit of a double whammy, because I fell in love with the F355 because of the same test. The last of the old school Ferraris.

In that color specifically.

In that color specifically.

I'd prefer a blue, but anything dark.

For that I'd prefer a red, but anything dark again.

Somewhat unfortunately. I still like those, but luckily I greatly prefer the Burtmobiles.

Speaking of people named Burt, Tremors was so awesome when I was little. Unfortunately, I was young and stupid and didn't realize that Burt Gummer didn't drive a GMT400 Blazer in that movie, but rather a K5 Jimmy.

Too bad the turbo didn't come in that color. And that I didn't know about it. Even when I was little I hated when people hacked those up to look like K.I.T.T.

We (and, later, I) owned an S-10 Blazer of that exact vintage, so living the dream.

Oh shut up. I can feel your looks.

I'll spare everyone the same old 80s-and-onward supercar selection and get straight to the more sensible dream machine of my youth.

Honda CR-X SiR: I was never keen on the Civic variant. Always had my eyes set on the kammback in either a stock or lightly-modified form. Preferably the former.

Hondacrxsirstock.jpg

Peugeot 406 Coupe: The saloon was our family car from 2000 until 2005. They often had at least one Coupe at the local dealership that always grabbed my attention. Also helps that I'd already taken a liking to both pre and post-facelift 406 models by that point.

Jaguar S-Type R: My favourite V8 Superstar and the only practical childhood dream car I can recall. Lusted after one of these ever since Maxi Test (Motors TV) reviewed one over a decade ago. Darker colours greatly preferred.

And as one bonus exotic...

Lancia Delta S4 Stradale: Literally the only homologation special I hankered for way back when. And still do to an extent.

I had a fascination with concept cars and unusual cars (even for supercars) as a kid, and wanted one of these more than anybody has a right to:

Excelent taste, I'm right with you there on the Zender Fact 4.

My dream cars as a child were these:

of course:

Way more odd:
1991_Bugatti_EB_110_GT_02.jpg

later on I started reading about hot rodding and stuff and everything wnet to hell from there. My dream car is still a early 30s Ford hot rod.

Interesting choice on that PT Cruiser up above. People rag on those cars so hard, but I'm actually a big fan of the styling. Sure the performance is probably crap, and I've been in one and know the interior sucks, but they look awesome in certain colors.

These were my main childhood dream cars:

1969mach1.jpg

My dad took me to a lot of car shows, and the Mustangs were always my favorites, particularly the '69 Mach 1, in this color. *argh, that photo didn't have the right hood! *edit!*

3372_1989_porsche_930_black_22k_web.jpg

In early elementary school I built a model of a 930 and painted it black. My memory's usually pretty lousy, but I think it was seeing one of these in traffic that got me interested in cars in the first place.

qg2ow0canwdszqylslfe.jpg

The poster I had on my wall, though, was a Vector W8 Twin Turbo. Not a dream car, but they're cool.

Nowadays, I want an NSX and... almost any gen Mustang. A pre-996 911 is still high up there as well.

A particular 1998 Road & Track (which I still have) shootout featuring the then-new Audi TT, Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster S, and BMW Z3-M. I was 9 years old.

I still remember a quote about the Honda:

Those 5 red hash-marks past the 9 speak volumes

Referring, of course, to this:

I could have bought one a few years ago when I was working, but decided grad school was a better choice. Now that's done.....:D

Mine will be a late AP1 car Suzuka Blue on Blue. Mugen hardtop, nice exhaust, free-breathing intake, and maybe wheels. Oh and a front lip. If I get bored with it, I'll throw on a rotrex supercharger and look for around 500bhp.

IMG_00431.jpg

Something like that, although that's an AP2 I think. It's the closest thing I'll ever own to a Lexus LF-A. With a supercharger...it might even outrun one.

Edit: Remembered slightly wrong. It was September 2000, so I was 11.

I couldn't believe the *boring* Boxster won over the much more interesting S2000. Looking back, I like both, but the Boxster has a **** engine...so....

How could I forget! A lot of my dream cars were Porsches!

I still want an early 911 turbo :D

Dodge_Viper_RT-10_1992%2011.jpg

I had a toy of a 1992 Viper as a kid. I fell in love, then cheated on it with my current loves: A 1969 Z/28 Camaro, a 1957 Bel-Air, a 1958-1962 Corvette, and a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6.

While you all were drooling over Lamborghinis and McLaren F1s, I was drooling over this.

bmw_z3_m_coupe_us-spec_3.jpg

Oddly, this is the only car I remember having an attachment to.

It sucks that this car has gotten so expensive now. I think the M version can go for up to $25k. Man, I was some odd hipster child back then.

Comparatively simple by the standards of this thread... but the black 911 baddies in Condorman (a film of questionable quality, in hindsight) are what made me fall in love with Porsche 911s.

Condorman at the IMCDB (didn't even know this was, like, a thing).
