I can never capture back fire, I can pause it at the right time, but when I take the photo it disappears

It took me well over an hour to capture it. It is especially hard to do at night but if you set the shutter speed high enough and the backfire has to be away from the car. So in its final stages. I just angled the camera to look like it was still in the muffler, just coming out.
