For Americans, have any of you got your stimulus check yet? I'm still waiting on mine and when I go to the IRS website, it tells me it can't find me. I just want to be stimulated damnit!

No, but for real, I just want to buy a bunch of stuff from local businesses. Liquor mostly, but you know, from local distillers.
Mine was in my checking account Wednesday morning.

I don't qualify for stimulus.

We're in the bracket where we don't get the full thing, but from what I can figure we get something like a $1,000 between my wife, my little dude, and myself. It's not much, but I guess I'll take it since I assume it's more or less a tax refund.

Stimulated last week. Beer and bacon restocked.

Whoa, Language!

I still haven't received anything either as of now. I may or may not get anything.

Yep, got mine last week. Placed that entire baby into my savings account! (Honda Civic Type R downpayment fund :D)

No check coming our way. Daughter filed but I don't know whether she's gotten it or not. It was to be direct deposit, so I suspect she has.

I was afraid I would have a problem since I moved last June so my address had changed since the last time I filed so there was a chance they would send it to my last address. I haven't got a tax refund since I was about 19 years old so I pay every year. About 3 or 4 days ago I went on the website, put in my new address and used the data off of my 2018 return since I figured that was the last info they had. Like you it told me that doesn't match what they had and I had to wait 24 hours to try again.

So the next day I used my 2019 info since even though I haven't sent in the check yet my account had already e-filed my return. Once I put all of that info in it told me it was successful and my check should be direct deposited. We shall see.

I checked on Wednesday when some people I know got theirs. Apparently the IRS didn't have my deposit information, even though I've had direct deposit on my refunds for as long as I can remember. Now it just says "will update when new information is available".

UK here but just chiming in on the money relief front;

My mum's still working from home (admissions for a school) but my dad (garage equipment repair) has no work coming in with all the garages close. Many of them likely to be pretty tight fisted over the next few months so full services will probably be hard to come by, most likely just mandatory calibrations unless anyone feels like throwing us a bone.

He's self employed and the grant is based on declared profits, but the way my dad's business works shows basically no profit, so there's no relief available for him as far as we know.

Then again as a self employed small business owner, he's gotten used to this kind of treatment from HM gov, I think.

I'm drawing out my premium bonds to assist the family. Mum wanted me to save them but I've no income right now and this, I think, is a pretty good definition of a rainy day to save for.

Does that mean the business is not profitable, or does that mean he didn't want to show one?

I don't make a habit of poking around his books, but since it affected the declarations for a student loan back when I left school, I suspect the latter. We are far from a wealthy family, however, I'm sure the reasons are good enough for however he does his business, he's been doing it a long time.

If your father has a garage, he may be eligible for the £10k Small Business Grant Fund.

Unfortunately no, he doesn't own any premises. He's a bloke with a van who takes care of services on equipment for garages; ramps, brake testers, stuff like that.

Generally the reason is to avoid paying tax to the government, I know a few people in this situation. While I'm not totally unsympathetic, if self-employed people are so used to being shafted by the government, and use that fact to justify avoiding paying tax, for instance, then they should use the money saved on taxation to make provision for a break in employment, pandemic related or not.

Yeah, you're pretty much correct. We do have contingencies in place luckily enough. I definitely agree people shouldn't duck tax and then expect a tax money handout, but while I'm not privy to the specifics, I'm fairly sure my dad is not the type to avoid it to get rich; he's not exactly an ambitious man. All he ever wanted, I think, was to set his own hours. The man hates mornings.

However between myself, currently without employment, and my brother who needs our support considering he has issues with his mental health, it's a strain at the best of times as my mother has always been woefully underpaid for being an utter workaholic. That's why I'm calling rainy day and pulling some of my savings to alleviate the strain.

I'm not saying the government is wrong not to pay out for people like my dad, but it definitely isn't very helpful :P

I hope one of the outcomes of all this is, is all entities taking greater responsibility for their financial future. Business of all sizes should get tax relief on an emergency contingency fund, that could, for example only be unlocked under specific conditions. People should hopefully now realise that living from pay cheque to pay cheque without any safety net isn't a good idea. Sure there's an element that simply can't do anything about this, but there's a lot of people that could, but haven't... myself included... Historically I've made no such provision, partly through ability, but I'd have to concede mostly through priority. If a business (be it sole trader or SME, or global super hyper mega corp.) could pay it's wage bill from savings for a couple of months, and an individual had a couple of months worth of bills in a savings account... things would be a lot easier.

I agree. This whole thing is exposing naiveties on every level from personal to national.

I think I'm an extreme outlier having any savings at all at 26. I don't think any of my friends do. I'm almost glad my driving instructor had medical issues before I could do my tests and I never ended buying a car with them :s

What you are doing sounds reasonable.
About masks, many resort to the highly expedient bandana. I use one with a paper towel folded inside. Much better than nothing.
My Mum has made a reusable face mask from a piece of denim and some elastic. The elastic loops go round the ears and there are ties for the bottom, with a pouch/insert for tissue paper, so it reusable and washable. I will probably use it in anger shortly, as I need to go to the supermarket soon.

I got this message when putting in info for "Get My Payment" on the IRS site.

"According to information that we have on file, we cannot determine your eligibility for a payment at this time."

I looked at all of the qualifying factors and I cannot see that I wouldn't qualify, so I'm confused if this means I'm ineligible.

Le Monde published a map of France by department with the actual overmortality during the Covid-19 outbreak. It shows that in the two main Covid-19 affected areas, the mortality compared to (average of) 2018 and 2019 in 2020 is up to 100% (doubling) and 135%.

This is definitely not just a flu.

Well, it's discouraging. New Jersey has the 2nd highest infection rate (and 2nd highest fatality rate) in the US. We're far behind New York but we'd be number 8 on the list of countries. Pretty staggering considering we have a population the size of Switzerland. But the discouraging part is that today was the 4th highest in terms of new confirmed cases since the Pandemic started, and significantly higher than the last two days. And the day isn't over yet. It looks like our curve isn't ready to flatten anytime soon.
Connecticut is on lockdown through May 20th and is using Pres. Trump's guidelines to opening America again.
The main issue we have is that cases are not on a downward trajectory. For the last week we average 1500 through 3000 tests daily. On 4/13 we had 1358 new cases and yesterday we reported 1853 new cases. 4/10 we had 754 new cases, 4/17 we had 925 new cases. Yesterday we also had the most new cases to date.
Second closest was on 4/13 with 1346 new cases. After that the 6th with 1231. Those are all Mondays. Still rising as of yesterday. Still spreading.

Maybe someday we'll actually meet up at Lime Rock. The early May race has been cancelled but the others are postponed or as originally scheduled, so far.

Hi Jerry. You know who you are. :odd:

Any reason why they went for a 0 to 64 age group in that article? I don't know much about France, but here in the Netherlands the mortality rate starts picking up from the age of 49. The mortality in ages 0 to 50 is 23 in the Netherlands. 198 in the catagory 50 to 65.. That is a significant difference in my opinion. Or is the situation different in France?

Coronavirus-driven CO2 shortage threatens US food and water supply, officials say:

Article
Washington state emergency planning document points to difficulties obtaining carbon dioxide gas, essential for water treatment

Article
In an open letter to the vice-president, Mike Pence, the (Compressed Gas Association) coalition warns: “Preliminary data show that production of CO2 has decreased by approximately 20%, and experts predict that CO2 production may be reduced by 50% by mid-April.”

It continues: “A shortage in CO2 would impact the US availability of fresh food, preserved food and beverages, including beer production.”

Not the beer!

Our Health Secretary has just said that Human trails for a vaccine in the UK will start on Thursday...

Any opinions on this article on COVID-19 testing the homeless?

From the article:
BOSTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now “actively looking into” results from universal COVID-19 testing at Pine Street Inn homeless shelter.

The broad-scale testing took place at the shelter in Boston’s South End a week and a half ago because of a small cluster of cases there.

Of the 397 people tested, 146 people tested positive. Not a single one had any symptoms.

Received mine Wednesday morning. Haven't stimulated myself with anything, though. Just money in the bank.

I have not received mine and the federal website doesn't seem to have a clue of even what my status is. I'm a straight-up-White American with lineage going back to the mid 1800s for reference. That titanium gravel bike isn't going to stimulate itself to my apartment by itself, Feds!!

Interestingly, and much to the chagrin of many I'm sure, the immigrant in my household who's greencard is so fresh that the ink is still wet received hers last week. Her name does come before mine alphabetically though....
