The Swedish approach to the epidemic is different and I am very curious what the end result will be for them compared to other countries which have severe restrictions.
People in my local town's social media pages are using Sweden as an excuse to proclaim, "See, they did it! Open everything up right now!" Just complete disregard for any of the details in how/why they're at their specific point & if the US can mimic it so "easily".

Governor Jelly Belly just announced he extended the llinois stay at home order through May. Guess I'll be here for a while longer.

He will be lifting some restrictions on park usage, etc.

It's all quite interesting, but complex.

Currently the Swedish authorities are projecting around 11,000 deaths due to coronavirus by August, which doesn't sound that bad ... but a similar figure per/capita would mean 360,000 deaths in the US. How acceptable would that be to Americans? And the Swedes have a lifestyle/business/social organization that is fundamentally different from that of the US, with a superior level of social cooperation & cohesion, so, as you say: how transferable would the Swedish approach be to the US?

One other plus of the Swedish approach, however, is the eventual development of "herd immunity". This might mean less re-occurrence of the virus later. There's just a lot that is not clearly understood at this point.

With all the different ways to tackle the problem of pandemic being tried out by Sweden, Germany, Italy the US and everyone else acting on their own national instincts, we are going to see what works and what doesn't. We are guaranteed that in the future there will be lessons learned and the world will soon be under more sustainable economies and realistic political regimes. A new Golden Age of Enlightenment?

In short, the pandemic is a blessing in disguise, a salutary kick in the teeth to show us the error of our ways. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Ad Astra Per Asperum!

So Trump suggested that injecting disinfectant may be something to look at because it kills the virus.

Hopefully more people don't die.

I've just seen this. Not sure what to say about it really. I mean it could work, right?

Remember Billy, don't forget to consult your medical doctor before injecting yourself with disinfectant.

According to the evening NBC news, antiseptic throat spray tests are actually underway.

At some point in the future we'll be able to laugh about the situation and this clip will be a cornerstone of that recovery process. Another will be the raft of books from people inside the administration, providing that the Trump dynasty doesn't provide the post-Donald president.

For now I'm consoling myself with all the replies that are actually defending him.

What about the people that are afraid of needles... Can we just spray the disinfectant straight into their mouths ?

I watch these things just about every day. This was so bad. I wish he would quit thinking out loud in front of the whole nation, and leave being President to somebody else.

Stop pussy-footing around - just say it for Christ's sake. The guy is a ****ing moron & having a ****ing moron in charge of the most powerful country on the planet is bad - very bad.

They can drink it straight from the bottle, it'll make their immune systems stronger.
And we'll make every American healthy, so very healthy, like you'll never believe. We'll be the healthiest nation on earth, we already are, we're the envy of the world. Other great leaders call me and ask how can you be so healthy, they want to know, they can't figure it out.

People can say what they want about YouTubers or game play streamers in general, but when they can do stuff like this, it's hard to give them grief about their profession.

Props out to Jack here, who recently lost his grandmother to Covid-19 and raised half a million dollars today for the CDC foundation.

Quite. He is a dangerous idiot who has created a toxic culture where he is practically beyond reproach or challenge. In this precise context, that is extremely bad news. I can only hope that even the most ardent Trump supporter can tell when he is talking utter crap.

As a polite reminder for this thread is general, while comments and opinions pertaining to the outbreak and the handling of the outbreak by various governments are welcome, I won't allow this thread to be derailed by unsubstantiated conspiracy theories or comments that either imply or support the view that the pandemic is anything other than a public health emergency.

As such, posts of this nature will be deleted.

He is. But in an economy crisis like this I would rather have an "idiot" that is good at solving unemployment problems than a genius that has no experience in handling those same problems.
Here in Italy we don't have any option. Nobody is good enough with unemployment problems.
However it is really sad to watch politicians use this pandemic for their disputes and propaganda.

American unemployment soared 600% in one week.
Because of Trump? As far as I remember the unemployment rate was one of the lowest during Trump administration before covid. Sure somebody will take that in consideration. I would.

I wouldn't give Trump too much credit or criticism over his record on employment, and there is indeed an imminent economic and employment crisis to deal with... but his idiotic comments on the public health crisis are not exactly instilling confidence in his ability to deal with these associated crises.

I do agree with @Chrunch Houston though, and would be a lot happier if Trump just left the medical stuff to the experts - it would be as simple as Trump just sticking to the script rather than ad-libbing... which he has proved time and time again that he cannot do without descending into an incoherent, jibbering idiot. Trump seems incapable of doing that though, and that is because he appears to believe that his insights are indispensable.
