Just out of interest, was your customer older than you, or a different ethnicity?

Close to retirement. And pale as a freshly painted wall.

It sounds like you did indeed dodge a bullet... I do wish testing were more generally available... the UK is still only testing those who think they have symptoms, and even some key workers can still not get tests, let alone regular tests.

And the entire Premier league gets tested what, every week?

The Lancet has poured cold water on the hypothesis that the drop in cases in Europe may be due to herd immunity kicking in:

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31357-X/fulltext#sec1

They say that there are two main possibilities: that cases are reducing because of lockdown restrictions (and implies a higher infection fatality ratio), or that cases are now reducing due to immunity build-up in the community (and implies a much lower infection fatality ratio).

They conclude that the first scenario is much more probable... which is not great news.

I won't be going back to work as my firm have told me that, due to the downturn in business, I no longer have a job to go back to. On the bright side shielding my mum just became a heck of a lot easier.
Sorry to hear that too... my contract is up in 6 weeks and still no word about renewal (despite previous verbal assurances). But, it would also solve a similar dilemma for me - albeit it would likely create more problems than it would solve.

Meanwhile, the local ice cream van just came around for the first time since lockdown...

Ours made some good money during the hot spell. Presumably, as I didn't go outside to check whether they had many takers...

@McLaren you were asking a couple of weeks ago about the big increase in cases from Alabama. We just set a new record high on Wednesday. But health officials aren't sure if there is one common factor responsible.

https://whnt.com/news/coronavirus/a...lized-patients-reaches-record-high-wednesday/
I'm guessing this was around the time of the cities in Alabama was reporting an ICU shortage that I posted about right? I never did hear anymore out of it, tbh, so I assumed it leveled back off.

Did anyone catch the board meeting in Orange County over the citizens' push back against a mandatory mask policy? It is on NowThis' Twitter & clearly cut to show the crazier arguments being made, so it's not exactly fair (since there could easily be just as many who were more neutral in their dislike for the masks), but the arguments that are showcased are really something else.

Edit* Here's a 16 minute video of many of these folks. No one will blame ya'll if you can't make it past 2-3 minutes in. The woman equating George Floyd's death by claiming masks are "kneeling on the necks of the people" was hard to listen past for me.

Was...was that one chick wearing a tiara? I know California is weird and all, but still. There might've been more but there's only so much stupidity I can take from the world's Karens and Richards.

I feel you. Made worse is that I'm almost a year of work experience. Just short by 2 months.

Its just a ****** situation all around, but I can assure you that you're not alone.

I hear the inner "farm land" areas of Cali are full of some very interesting people. These would seem to be the prime examples. I do find it strange, that the first chick was accusing them of being thugs, and then clearly raised her voice quite loudly, in a very threatening and thuggish manner... Well, ok. So, not surprising.

Good news - Apple's got you covered!

Isn't Orange County directly underneath L.A. though, where Disney, Laguna Beach, Irvine, & other big coastal attractions are?

Yes... I lived and worked in Irvine in 2015... had a great time there and met many wonderful people, so I wouldn't take that video as representative, even though 'Locust woman' is from Irvine :ill:

She must be pretty pissed; I had read Irvine was going to keep requiring masks regardless.

You are right, I stopped at exactly 2min17...

People are talking with so much rage for so little...
It's just a mask for their own health and the safety of others... They can't be bothered... Obviously their freedom is above everyone's else. Typical of Irvinites if you ask me.

The first lady was totally talking nonsense!

Not Richards, Dicks.

Karens and Dicks.

Must've been one of those role-playing gatherings

This area was farmland 50 years ago.
But hardly nowadays. Irvine is not inland, it is only 20 min from the coast by car.

I hope these people do not represent Irvine, because I think the majority of Irvinites are well off and rather educated people...

The worst of Irvine came out to speak up... We only hear the loudest... Nothing to be said about People who are ok with the restrictions and wearing mask.

My mistake. I thought this was for the states council, not a counties.

...Feels like only yesterday that South Africa's overall cases went past 50,000. Today, that shot past 70,000. Worse still, the local news reports that there's actually a testing backlog and it can take up to nine, NINE, days for a result to come out. So, the figure is at worst, nine days off.

Alarmingly, the so-called recovered cases sit around 38,000 plus, meaning that "most likely" nine days ago, active cases numbered over 32,000. I'm losing more and more faith in this government to get a grip on the situation...

Global cases approach 8 million. India, picking up a head of steam, will likely clear 500k in a few days. Brazil has stopped reporting, and China - who knows?

Fortunately, we didn't stop.
There was an attempt to make up the numbers, by the interim Health Minister (30 days without one...). The Active General currently occupying the position heard the advice from a billionaire named Carlos Wizard, that was entering the government in a Secretary inside the Ministry. The guy quit before entering, knowing that a tsunami of lawsuits could hit him if he was held responsible for the idea.

But what idea?
Well, the daily numbers consists of people that actually died in the last 24h and people that death by covid were confirmed in the last 24h, but died earlier. His idea was publishing only the deaths in the last 24h... the other ones "theoretically" would be added in the correct day of death. However (wait... breathe) they changed the publication website so only the last day numbers were showing, the total numbers of cases and deaths disappeared!! So the corrected earlier days never went into consideration... GENIUS! Of course too, this would be published after the TV Journals (to hurt the media, those commies!!)
This delinquent idea, however, failed. Major TV, Journals and the State Secretaries created a consortium to publish the total numbers. After a tsunami of lawsuits, The Supreme Court demanded the Ministry to held back the idea and returned the publication to were it was, but it became suspicious.
So the public numbers considered by now comes from that parallel, but much more reliable, consortium.

Unfortunately however, I see the numbers rising in the next days and weeks. Commerce lobbyist are forcing the reopening of the economy without the proper reduction of cases and with failed procedures. It's not uncommon to see overflowing malls and boulevards, so I'm not positive about it.
To be fair, I still don't know how we didn't pass the disastrous US numbers by now, but there are enough saboteurs for me to realize it is just a matter of time.

A biotech company based in New York is developing an 'antibody cocktail' based on results obtained from 'humanized mice' and convalescent SARS-CoV-2 patients, and are discovering different combinations of antibodies that can be used in potential vaccines.

https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2020/06/15/science.abd0827

Apparently this approach also 'prevents rapid mutational escape'... which I presume means that some antibody treatments which do not fully neutralize a virus can exert a selective pressure on the virus (akin to antibiotic resistance) and generate mutants that are impervious to the vaccine.

Human trials on this antibody cocktail are underway...
