If we just let it rip and not do anything that would disrupt the economy, and 10,000 die....is that easily the moral choice over shutting down the economy by 10% in an effort save a few thousand lives?

If we're going to take it as a given (which I don't) that we're going to disrupt the economy, enact quarantines, and hold people hostage in their houses, the evidence I posted above definitely demonstrates that the right course of action might be to allow the virus to spread through the under 50 or under 60 population. And quarantine everyone over 50 or 60 until a vaccine is developed.

This could end up being a bit like chickenpox. Where you actually want to get it when you're younger. A picture is starting to shape (hasn't quite yet) where you might want to throw COVID-19 parties to make sure your kids get immunity.*

The older population is less likely to have livelihoods affected and cause productivity disruption if they quarantine themselves.

* I say hasn't quite because there are still not a lot of cases for young kids. I'm theorizing that this is due to low testing because of low severity. But maybe they just don't contract it, in which case throwing that party would not be such a wonderful idea.

Another interesting development is Trump asking for $2 billion and getting $8 billion. What would you do if you suddenly had an extra $6 billion? Will there be plenty for discretionary relief of small business and individuals?

One nice thing about COVID-19 is that it's forcing companies to reconsider work-from-home programs. I'm hearing under-the-table reports of at least one large institution (which shall remain nameless for now) getting their feet moving on telework.

Telework was already taking off, it just got a giant shove in the right direction.

...here's what I was referring to. NASA and the Air Force conducting telework testing.

There's that, but even if younger people can catch it I'm not sure therowing parties would be a good idea if the reports that some people have already caught it twice are true.

Thankfully I live in a small town and the panic hasn't set in here yet. Was able to go buy toilet paper and paper towels tonight without issue. ;)

Yeah same here. I went to Publix and Walmart last night and it was like nothing had happened. Shelves still fully stocked with plenty of water AND toilet paper. And this is North Alabama we're talking about. They will strip stores clean of milk and bread if there is a slight chance we might get an inch of snow that will be gone the next day.

Well there are two strains apparently. But if it's more adaptive than chickenpox, you'd just hope to avoid it.

...Experts and people keep saying "don't panic", and I agree, but it's doing nothing for my worries.

Both of my parents are in the latter half of the 60s, plus they have underlying health issues. Dad is a lifelong smoker, mom's got diabetes and heart problems, which means they are smack dab in the "danger zone". I'm seriously concerned that my dad is still working, and he's required to meet dozens of strangers per day as that's his job.

So far, there has been only one confirmed case in my country and it's in another city 500km away, but I'm still not feeling confident at all as this part of the world is about to enter a pretty chilly Autumn, which also happens to be our flu season.

So I wanted to buy some industrial face masks despite all the warnings from the experts saying that it's useless, but as it turns out, they are all sold out. Damn.

At this point, I can only hope for the best....

As long as your dad is washing his hands and has a hand sanitizer, maybe he can wear gloves? He should be fine.

....Not as easy as it sounds. I've been to his workplace, and washing his hands regularly isn't a practical option. Gloves might work though, but whether he listens to me or not is another matter altogether. He can be pretty dead-set in his worldview, you see.

Just had the confirmed case here in Minnesota.
As the person was on the cruise ship that had infected people on it. :banghead:
Came back home on the 25th of Feb, and got care on Thursday, positive confirmation today.

It's like um.
You just got back from this and we should put you into 14 day self care or something.

There is a toilet paper company in South Australia and they are working 24/7 now, because there is a demand for toilet paper.
People should realise this COVID-19 virus does not effect your rear end, it effects your Lungs.

Cheaper that tissue and you get more

Well, I've officially been noticeably affected by it...and I don't mind. I got an email notification that a meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed until an unspecified later date. Bonus, since it was to take up most of the day, meaning I wouldn't be in the office, I may not even have to pop in; but I won't know for sure until Monday. The subject of working from home was also broached, but nothing has been put into motion.

...

I also swung by Smart & Final on the way home to take advantage of some deals on booze, fully expecting the place to be a madhouse, but it wasn't any busier than I'd expect for a Friday. They had a sign posted apologizing for a lack of hand sanitizer, sanitary wipes and face masks, citing supplier demand and stating it wasn't known when more would be in stock, but I went out of my way to check out toiletries (of which they stock in bulk) and they didn't seem to be in short supply.

Then I'm in line for the register and the younger guy behind me has a big package of coffee filters sitting on top in his basket and a package of rubberbands in the child seat area. I asked if he was planning to use the filters and rubberbands to make masks. He laughed and said they were unrelated.

And Utah has now declared a State of Emergency because we have...wait for it...zero cases. There are 5 PUI but so far they've tested negative and are showing no signs or symptoms. I get that we want to be prepared, but declaring a State of Emergency when most people have no idea what that means will cause panic. I suspect my local Target will be out of damn near everything when I go on Sunday.

Seems like the biggest issue with something like SXSW is it pulls participants and attendance from all over. There's no telling where anyone in particular has been.

Say...is Disneyland open?

[Edit] Looks like only Disney parks in Japan and China are closed.

First case confirmed in Slovakia; a 52 year old man who may have caught it via his son who recently returned from Venice.

Testing is so underprepared here that after being confirmed here in Bratislava, the samples were sent to Berlin to be double-checked.

Slovakia is expected to cancel all flights to/from Italy on Monday and was doing so anyway, irrespective of this confirmed case.

And people wonder why I don’t want the U.S. government touching my healthcare.

And soon everyone may get free health care.

But my insurance just announced they'll cover in full the testing of COVID-19 100%
So I guess that's a plus?
