I quite enjoy having Bill Gates read me a bed time story every night.

It looks like you're trying to get sleep...

My school teacher friend in Texas gave me an update after 3 days of classes - keep in mind this is a fairly small district in a city with a total population of around 120k.

Students isolated in quarantine: 521
Employees isolated in quarantine: 93
Total active cases: 452
Student Active cases: 365
Employee Active cases: 87

3 days.

Some cautiously optimistic news for California and particularly the San Francisco region:

California seeing signs delta-fueled COVID surge is slowing

The high vaccination rate here in the Bay Area probably prevented the worst outcome, but the surge was hard to ignore nonetheless.
So the figures I gave were yesterday.

It's now up to, respectively:
771
108
610
502
108

New Zealand is back in lockdown.

A single case was discovered in the community mid yesterday, and nobody was sure if it was the delta variant or not.

Quite soon after, it was determined that yep, indeed it was, and now there's four cases with that number expected to rise, as the first case is a tradie who had been in several homes recently.

So, the whole country is in total lockdown for three days, with Auckland and the Coromandel specifically staying down for a week while we see how big the resulting blow up is.

As you can imagine, people panic bought again, because they're idiots. But while it sucks, hopefully I can actually use my nation-mandated holiday to get a few motorsport things organized without the additional pressure of full time work!

I don't think Abbott'll be suffering any major symptoms as I believe he's been fully vaxxed, but this'll latter fact probably be lost on the pro-Covid clown crowd.

He absolutely is. The question is did he infect anyone else. I have only heard small bits that he was meeting with a giant group of people before testing positive, & I think it may have been here in N. Texas.

Edit* Oh lord, he did. Full capacity, unmasked, older folks & knowing that area, I bet a huge chunk are not vaccinated.

As frustrating as it is (I was planning to go to Queenstown next month!), I look at how crazy New South Wales is going and am kinda glad we went straight to Level 4.

That link doesn't work in the UK but I did find this...

Do they deserve it? Probably.

Should we be happy (or snickering) about it? No.
I think I know what you're talking about with the latter, and you're right, it's tasteless and I should be better, so...apologies...but I confess the former confuses me a little bit if I'm interpreting the latter correctly.

That said, I'll pivot slightly from what made me snicker (but shouldn't have) and say that people standing up from their seats, which are plainly visible in the pictures provided, is not the same as there being standing room only.

Edit: Probably deserve the snickering. Got it. The order had me turned around. Brain fart.

And again, I apologize.

Cases are back on the rise here in Scotland - two whole weeks now since the downward trend of new cases stopped and went into reverse, and cases are expected to keep rising as most remaining restrictions were lifted on August 9th, and schools across the country have reopened in the last week.

Fortunately, Scotland does still have mask mandates and a high vaccination rate among adults, but school-aged children (under 12s) don't have either, and hence I won't be surprised to see a growing number of schools having problems.

I'm also a bit dubious about the pace of restrictions being lifted. Being in town right now is like the pandemic never happened, save for the sight of most people on buses and trains still wearing masks, but there's definitely fewer people wearing masks in shops and even in my work, which I'm not comfortable with... not least as I am apparently expected to do face-to-face teaching in a few week's time, at which point we could be back at the highest level of infections - indeed, I'll be surprised if we are not.

What does this say about the whole 'herd immunity' thing? Well, if cases continue to rise and hospitalisations follow suit, then I am assuming that we will see the return of some restrictions... but it doesn't bode particularly well for the idea that herd immunity is going to be a credible 'stand alone' solution, if indeed it ever was.

Where did that heckin' huge spike in Scotland cases come from today?!

Other than that, I've been telling myself cases are somewhat flat in the UK - as in, considering they are at a high level already, it hasn't looked like exponential growth.

The only plan seems to be to gain more herd immunity by letting cases roll on, and perhaps jerk a knee if/when hospital admissions get 'too high', although no threshold has been made public AFAIK.

As of tomorrow the "headline vaccination uptake by report date for the UK and nations will be updated to include ages 16 and 17 in the denominator". Today's numbers are 89.6% first dose, 77.5% second dose.

I'm not convinced the denominator is correct for those figures anyway. I believe it's based on census counts, which is lower than the overall number of people eligible for vaccination. That said, it's probably closer than the number of people registered at GPs, since many of them went back to mainland Europe (after summer work / after Brexit). And whenever we've seen data on uptake by ethnicity, even the highest uptake group hasn't been anything like as high as the dashboard's 'headline' figure.

So tl;dr, our vaccination level isn't as good as the dashboard says. This definitely affects any herd immunity calculations.

Yeah I'm kinda the same, seems crazy to lockdown over (at the time) 1 case but now some more of the details are coming out we could be in the same boat as NSW very easily.
I am probably more concerned than ever, I am in the Electrical trade and deal with sparkies who work in Devonport all the time... And a lot of the contact tracing have shown our cases spent a lot of time in the area my kids go to school, gone to my local mall and supermarket... Its all gotten far to close to home for my liking ☹️ !!

I guess some good news though, my age group can sign up for the vaccine now 🙂.

I bought a new package of surgical masks, actually the same brand but a different color, and man... those things suck. Scratchy, hurt my ears... I didn't realize surgical masks varied so much.

My workplace was one of the ones doing an at-work vaccine trial. I got my first jab about two hours before the announcement .

I fear for our ability to ever achieve enough vaccinations to reach herd immunity if some of the morons I work with are any indication.

Just heard what is quite possibly the most ludicrous reason for not going to get vaccinated that I think I'll hear.

A guy at work in his early 50's lives with his elderly parents in their 80's. The parents aren't getting vaccinated because, well Covid is all a scam according to them.
His reasoning for also not going to get vaccinated in his words.

"If I get vaccinated and it actually works what if I still get Covid but don't know as the symptoms might not be there because the vaccination is working I could pass it on to my parents. Sometimes you need to think think of others and not yourself"

I opened my mouth to explain why it would be better to get the vaccination and try to talk his parents into but thought what's the point and just walked away.

Last time I tried to explain something to him (non Covid related) he tilted his head and looked at me like a confused puppy would.

He's playing 5D chess on you it seems.

Not to mention that the average American (let alone poor Americans) will be lucky to access such treatment, let alone get it for free. And unlike the vaccine that can basically be taken at the individual's leisure, Mab treatment needs to be used when someone is already infected but not yet seriously ill. Given how most people don't know they are infected until they are already ill, that leaves a very short window of opportunity to get the treatment - something that clearly isn't an issue for politicians.
