I'm afraid you people have it all wrong. Washing your hands and limiting contact does nothing to prevent catching the virus. It really all depends on how much water bottle cases and TP you have hoarded, sorry I mean stocked from Costco.

Two people at my workplace are self-isolating, including the manager. Their children go to a nearby school where one person allegedly tested positive. No work closure planned yet but I expect supply and demand will fall in the coming weeks and reduced capacity will take effect.

I've already cancelled my hotel reservations for Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland while Jet2 have cancelled all flights to Austria starting tomorrow so half my flight expenses ought to be refunded. Hopefully Swiss get in touch and offer to return the other half I paid.

San Francisco is feeling pretty Kafka-esque right now - it's clear that things are starting to become quite different but people are still trying to go on like normal. I saw some pretty concerned faces across the street at the coffee shop I frequent.

Shop manger: "You guys gonna be around next week?"
Me: "I think so"
Him: "Well, if you guys come in, I guess we'll try to make it too".

Couldn't help but feel a sense of despair.

I'm getting nonstop promotion emails from local businesses...I really hope they don't go under.

Shew! Look at that duck and weave, I see where some of his sycophant get it now.
On not unrelated news. Does the POTUS seem, idk, less energetic this past day or two? Perhaps a bit horse maybe? I wonder if he and his admin team, that apparantly works completely independent of him, would self quarantine.

I worry about what will happen in Africa when the virus spreads there.

It's probably already there and they either haven't noticed or don't care cause they have things like cholera and dysentery to worry about.

I think those small coffee shops, pizza parlors and what not might be last gathering places left. In many states large gatherings are no longer allowed. In MI no gathering over 250 is allowed, so arenas, theaters and the alike are really gonna be hit as all of those shows are canceled.
But... Starbucks or BiggBy you can get maybe 30 people in to (around here anyway) the store. With little to no lines at that. Or, at least once the panic buying is over and everyone is cacooned in their homes.

Just got an email notice from Hilton International saying that they will waive any booking cancellation fees if I have a room reserved at any of their hotels due to you know what.

I have never stayed at a Hilton brand hotel in my entire life.

So there is to be a charge, it's just that you don't think you should be the one that pays it.
It’s not my health I’m worried about- it’s my much more vulnerable neighbours, who live in the aged care facility across the road.

I do not live in a well-off area. Many of the family members of those residents simply do not have the money to pay several hundred dollars for a test. Nor could they afford any time off work or to let their life stop if they fell ill. My financial situation is irrelevant, for the greater good i’d rather pay extra tax to make sure sick people actually get tested instead of inadvertently killing the vulnerable.

CO governor just called for cancellation of anything with over 250 people as well.

I'm pretty sure the local costco is over that number right now. :)

I understand. You want them to get tested and you want that test to be charitably offered. That's not the same thing as outrage at the idea that it has a cost.

This may be of interest:

COVID19Temp.PNG

That's actually from February, but it shows mean surface temperature at various latitudes (at 1bar/1atm air pressure). Each of the black circles represents a location in which there is a known community transmission (person to person within the area, with no first-hand connection to other hotspots) hotspots.

Of course, correlation is not causation... but damn.

In this case is it not possible that correlation may be primarily contact with Chinese & tourists from/to China? In general I see the figures indicate that flu is much more prevalent in cold, dry environments where it may a) survive longer without a human host & b) be transmitted more readily between people. Other factors may be lack of sunlight (vitamin D). From what I'm reading it's not known exactly what the factors may be though.

Was that before or after this?

Does she have sources for those numbers? For what state? For what health system? Or did she simply just Google and take the highest numbers? I don't know, but I'm curious how she came to that number because the cost is going to vary wildly between states and health systems. Also, no one was going to be denied testing for COVID-19 if they couldn't pay. They're being denied for other reasons like not traveling, but that's a whole other discussion. They might get a bill late on down the road from the hospital, but between payment plans, financial aid, and simple writeoffs no one was going to go broke over the testing. They might go broke because they can't work, but that too is another discussion.

Either way, the point is that for something like what is going on right now, simply even considering charging people for it is insane. It's nice to see people working to make it that way because there should be no other way.

On a side note, stopped at the grocery store for water and they were still sold out. So I bought beer. Going to be a great weekend.

I just wanted to pick up a few things (normal casual shopping) right now but it's a no go. Every store I drove by was completely full; nowhere to park. Parking lots I've never seen past 1/4 capacity were suddenly overflowing. The panic is real, I guess. :grumpy:

That, and if you can't park a full-size pickup truck without hitting other vehicles (I've never had to lay on the horn for so long to get someone to stop) then DON'T BUY A FULL-SIZE PICKUP TRUCK!

Quoted for truth.

My apartments just sent out a notice that all community amenities are closed until further notice. (Gym, pool, etc)

A normal sized pack of toilet paper on display was 24.99 at my local Independent Grocer store today. And there was literally nothing else left on the shelves. The herd mentality is crazy.
