I just heard on the news that the PSN outage cost Sony 1 Billion dollars, don't know how accurate that figure is, but if it's true, that's big money, even for a major corporation like Sony.

I don't know why the world is so America-centric it's kind of disgusting and that's coming from an American. Sorry, if I were Sony Japan would be first. Period. End of discussion.

The PSN network won't be switched on in Japan until Sony can demonstrate that they have fixed the security threat. Not sure how long it will take for them to do that.

That's what i've heard also.
I'm curious maybe running PSN US is the way they demonstrate the security system.

Switching the entire PSN back on in one go was neevr going to be possiable (I now from expereince the logistics involved in rolling this kind of system out in a single country let alone the world).

So a phased switch on was always more realistic and all Sony have done is roll this out by market, and its no surprise that the largest market in terms of numbers (the US) was first, followed by the second largest market (Europe) next, and so on.

Its not an anti-Japanese or pro-American stance, its simply running a business, you get the markets you can back up and running ASAP and you target your biggest ones first.

No I see the business advantage but it kinda sucks for those still experience the outage, and almost proves the world is America-centric when an outage bemoaned worldwide of PSN is catered to the US. But as for $$$ it makes perfect sense. I just would have started in Japan if I were a Japanese company, but I'm not very business-savvy, clearly.

Anyway didn't mean to spark a heated debate, people :) Carry on as usual. I just felt bad for those in Asia who seem to be getting PSN at the tail end of the restoration.

So 👍 to Sony's restoration process, staggering it and whatnot, and I'm not saying they're doing it wrong. Just saying it seems sad that the world has to revolve around one country's demands in order to survive economically and those overseas who miss it just as much have to wait.

This is life, I suppose. Bed time, before I start (continue) babbling. GOod night.

Hi everyone,

Just to reassure those who did not receive their password email yet that i received it earlier this morning (after more than 48 hours of waiting). I have to mention that i received the email three times so far. That means that if you send your request multiple times, your first request won't be overwrited. So i recommend that you avoid requesting the email again as i'm pretty sure your first email is already on its way and that multiple requests will only slow down the process...

I'm really curious to know why did it take that much for Hotmail users (like me) to receive the email. Is Microsoft really behind this slowdown? Is the slowdown only Hotmail related?

Anyway, i hope you are all enjoying the PSN again.

I just got the email to my hotmail account, but when I try to reset password, it tells me 'timeout reset'. So I guess I'll have to wait a liitle longer, thankfully it's not for my primary account.

The hacker is from Japan.

I will defer celebrating how right I am until they catch the person. Probably won't though.

I just got the email to my hotmail account

Phew! I was beginning to think Microsoft were employing some dirty tactics.

Maybe they are. When I click the link in the email and go to PSN to change password I get the Passowrd Request Has Timed Out message.

2 min ago I get this in Portugal...

Yeah, I'm getting the same thing. maybe it means the PS store is coming back in the next day or two.

Well this is bad timing. I received the password reset email literally 2 minutes ago and now the site is down, so now I can't reset it :ouch:

Yeah me too. Now that Hotmail has sorted out their playstation Email blocking drama. I put the PS3 on and attempted log on. This prompted the system to send me another Email, it was on my computer as quick as I could re-connect my ethernet cable.

That was 2.5 hours ago. All I'm getting from the Sony site is that screen shown above. Very annoyed :grumpy: 👎

Apparently people who have already changed their password should be able to still play online. Just those that haven't reset their password yet...

Everybody's just gonna love this new development. So apparently this is why the password reset via email is not working.

Sony's PSN password page exploit
by Wesley Yin-Poole
www.eurogamer.net

Eurogamer has seen video evidence that verifies reports that Sony's PlayStation Network password reset system suffers from an exploit that allows attackers to change your password using only your PSN account email and your date of birth – information compromised in the PSN hack of 20th April.

Sony today made PSN sign-in unavailable for a number of its websites, including PlayStation.com and the PlayStation forums. All PlayStation game titles are also unavailable.

Crucially, the website users are directed to by password reset emails is now down.

"Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password via Playstation.com or Qriocity.com will be unable to do so for the time being," Sony said. "This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take.

"In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information."

Sony later tweeted: "Clarification: this maintenance doesn't affect PSN on consoles, only the website you click through to from the password change email."

The exploit was first revealed on Nyleveia.com.

"I would suggest that you secure your accounts now by creating a completely new email that you will not use ANYWHERE ELSE, and switching your PSN account to use this new email," recommends the site.

"You risk having your account stolen, when this hack becomes more public, if you do not make sure that your PSN account's email is one that cannot be affiliated with or otherwise traced to you."

NeoGAF users have also corroborated the claim.

Nyleveia claims to have contacted Sony about the exploit. "The system went down approximately 15 minutes after I received a response from SCEE on the matter."

Sony has taken the page in question down, and with any luck is fixing the exploit.

Eurogamer has contacted Sony for comment.

So are my details safe with these jokers?

Anyone know how to take Credit card details off this PSN?

Even if I get my card off the system is it too late?

Sorry I'm not very hacker savvy. Just tired of this nonsense now, they can keep there free games.

Yes you can and it is pretty easy. Log into your PS3, under the PSN section of the XMB select "Account Management," then select "Account Information" --> "Billing Information" --> Password --> then select the field "Delete Billing Information" confirm and you're done.

Probably already talked about in here but yesterday I was playing Black Ops online and I got signed out with a message that said "another user has logged in using your username" or something like that. I was able to sign back in and signed in today no problems. What's up with that? Don't get on my case if it's already been discussed in here...

So now Sony reports the "email exploit" is fixurd:

Update on PSN Password Reset Process

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.

This latest development could be worse than the original outage. This time people can lose their accounts to somebody else. But i think everyone is media drained of all this upset, might not be much fuss.

I've cancelled my credit card in the first week of the first outage, and removed it immediately last Sunday when I was online. Just in case. If I ever purchase again, it will be one time one shot deals. or by phone via codes.

That happened to me too, also while I was playing Black Ops. I didn't get signed out of PSN though, it just kicked me out of the lobby I was in. The message was in-game, not on the XMB.

That sounds like someone has your loggin info, only one machine can be online with the same account. I would change my password again if I were you.
