Well, we REALLY need a thread for this, it's one of the bigger events. So I opened this for general discussion.

Not much for me to say except that my fellow countryman is now in 4th position, one off podium, none other than Carlos Sousa, highest rated private runner as well.

Everytime I think of Dakar, I think these racers are some of the bravest in the world. Rally racers are brave enough, but you have to have plenty of courage to race through... basically the middle of nowhere, and stay competitive all the way to the Finish Line. If you're stuck in the desert, you're REALLY going to feel homesick. I know there are helicopters and support crews, but don't you think it's a son of a gun to not win this thing? But if you win Dakar, you'll have a hell of a lot of bragging rights. Just choose "car," "truck," or "bike." Three ways to win, just win PERIOD.

This year's event should be as challenging as ever, but it's going to be without that Dakar bike racer who died last month or two months ago (can't recall name).

Richard Sainct.

I think it's been tougher than many years this year. Certainly looks like Peterhansel has it tied up - especially after McRae's crash. It's a bit of a shame (although not entirely unexpected) that the VW challenge has faded, even though there are two of them in the top 5.

It's a mental event. I love it.

now im a big fan of Colin McRae but he should stick to rally because he is good at that. think about it, he crashed out in the first few hours of the le mans 24 hours and crashed out i think on the 2nd stage of the dakar last year and i think the 3rd this year and did anyone ever think that all track car sports (btcc for example) look up to f1 and f1 looks up to rally and rally looks up to dakar.

Robby Gordon was doing very well (fighting for the overall lead with 2 stage wins), but had a major crash. He lost 8 hours to the overall leader on that stage, and several more after some brake problems. He went into Stage 8 in 101st place, and finished in 26th. After Stage 9 (in which he had the 3rd best time) he is in 21st place. Today was rest day.

So when do you think this will be aired on tv?
here we get a live broadcast and the rest of what happened when it wasnt live and interviews with the drivers in the desert on eurosport but some nights its only on at 2.30 5.30 7.30 and 11.00 (all pm)

No TV coverage in US and Canada as far as I know. If you get the US channel called "the Outdoor Life Network," they will have some coverage around the 23rd of January.

Yes, I watch Dakar for quite a few years now. There is live broadcast 2x a day and a 45min show every nigh at 22:30 CET.

Didn't see this topic sooner ...

But today the Dakar was shaken by another death. The winner of 2001 and 2002 Dakar, father of two children (14 and 2), Fabrizio Meoni (47) died on the stage 11. It's another sad story for team KTM after september when Richard Sainct died in Egypt. It really is not pleasant, especially after yesterday's death of spanish privateer rider Manuel Perez.

Sad, sad day for Rally Raid.

RIP, Fabrizio and Manuel!

You know, I have heavy hearts for all the stars whom we've lost recently. The Dakar rally is very tough physcially and mentally. You can probably deal with the Baja 1000, but this is the freaking Sahara Desert, the biggest desert in the world. It can be hard just to find yourself out there. But winning this rally is like winning the Super Bowl or the English Premier Leauge- Heaven. You go through Hell to see the light.
