DeadNutsEven - Where anyone can win!!

In my opinion this formula works best when you have a group of people who value close competition and clean racing first, victory second. It requires a lot of honesty and people who only want to win may not fit the mold. Same applies to tires, lesser compounds provide more challenge and thrill while racing tires virtually remove all possibilities for mistakes and thus lesson the challenge making it more about just winning. They don't want to be on lesser tires because they might make a mistake and not win.

To make it work you need a solid group of like-minded drivers who are willing to play by the honor system for the greater good of the group/racing. Members of this group (DNE) will often throw their hand up when they are too fast and then dial their car back to make sure it's legal, sadly this trait is not always common with most groups. But since there is no solid way to enforce/police the rules you have to rely on the integrity of your drivers. You'll just have to watch the timing monitor and if you see someone consistently going under target you'll have to ask them to dial it back.

Details for the next 38's Race Night can be found here.

A quick note and couple of questions if you guys don't mind.

I was wondering why you guys typically use comfort and sports tires rather than racing compounds. And how do you determine your top speed and lap times?

The note I wanted to make was in regards to the tires, and the reason I ask for your choice in compounds is simply that the guys I race with that bother to take the time to do what's necessary to achieve what's needed, love this type of racing and are all sorts of excited about it. They were also excited about the idea of racing with you guys and using even more cars (as our races are themed toward Seasonal Events), but were turned off by the idea as soon as I mentioned your choices for tire compounds... I myself don't care what compound I'm on, and was a bit surprised by how many people are dead set against driving on anything but racing tires, but I do understand their argument in a way as I've never been to a track and seen anyone using road tires on track day or in any form of racing... Any insight on this?

Lastly, how should I handle those that simply don't seem to want to put the effort into making their car consistent and within the limits? I seem to be plagued with people who have run a few laps, gotten a time close to the limit, and then they jump into the race and end up going way faster, or when they go slower, they bitch and moan about the game being inconsistent... it's a headache, but I want to be as diplomatic as possible without being a complete a$$. Any thoughts here?

Thanks for the help yet again.

Cote and Brandon hit the nail on the head pretty much. We use street tires because that's what the group (Mike's original Parity Racing League) started with and we tend to prefer more realistic grip. Use whatever your group prefers but you''ll find that the lower cornering speeds and longer braking distances allow that street tires provide, allows for closer side by side racing because the margin of error is bigger. A slower pace allows for more precision in choosing braking points and in getting the cornering pace right.

In dealing with those that are consistently under the pace, Brandon hit the nail on the head. Either you take pride in putting in a good effort at qualifying and pride in not going under the pace or you don't. In Parity and Deadnuts, anyone going under the pace usually calls himself on it and DQ's himself from a race before he gets called out by anyone else. We also used to run two shorter sprint races before the main races to see what they cars would do under the pressure of competition, which usually makes most of us a little faster.

If someone doesn't call themselves out on their pace then you'll have no choice but to do it yourself. A simple, "Hey DriverX, how was your pace that race?" is usually all it takes. Most guys will realize they are caught at that point and make adjustments and/or DQ themselves. I used to save replays and fast forward them lap after lap while watching the timing monitor and record laps that were significantly under the pace without the benefit of the draft and sent out a few friendly PM's about it behind the scenes. Takes a while to get everyone on the same page but when it starts clicking, like it has with us, it's very smooth and competitive every race.

Ultimately if friendly reminders in the room and friendly PM's behind the scene don't work, you'll have no choice but to start dumping people. It's not fair to someone who puts an hour into qualifying a car, to lose to someone who puts in 5 minutes and has a half a second on everyone in the race. You'll start to lose the good people, and be stuck with the bad people. For the good of the group, the bad apples have to go, and the good ones need to know you're dealing with it behind the scenes.

Have any of you guys thought about PC racing? I've seen Sag in the PCARS thread, and Cote's sig about AC, but I was thinking about building a gaming PC, and was wondering if any of you have considered it.
I haven't dived into it yet either, but I am forever considering it. I had a (free) 6 month iracing trial and it wasn't for me, but pCARS (I'm a member) and AC are far better looking propositions. As of now I only own laptops, but once those two games are released, I'm probably going to buy a proper PC to play them (which is sooner or later).

I'm with Cote here. I'm really underwhelmed with the current videos circulating. But I'll probably buy it anyways. :indiff:

PCars will be a PS3 game as far as I know so you won't need a PC for it if you want to play. I already have a PC more than good enough for iRacing but never made the plunge. The thought of endlessly having to pay for stuff turns me off. Most of the other games seem so small and limited in comparison to GT5 I just can't get into them.

Thank you very much for the advice guys. I'm working on getting a group of like-minded people involved and weeding out those that don't want to put in the effort. I've decided that to give myself as wide a variety of cars as possible given the restrictions of the Seasonal Events rules, that tire selection will remain open. The only thing this changes is that I'm now turning tire wear off since our races are considerably longer than yours (25-30+ laps) and if some cars' tires are wearing faster than others, we'll end up with the same separation we're fighting to eliminate and some will have to pit while others don't, etc. So I've weighed all the positives and negatives of having tire wear vs. eliminating it, and to keep the close racing over a longer period of time, while maintaining the ability to race a PT Cruiser against a Saleen S7, tire wear must be turned off.

My thoughts exactly.

Probably me.

EDIT: Well, since its race time and I still don't have a car, I guess I won't be showing up. :(

Cant decide if I should use a stock Ford RS200 or the Integra I've used a few times already.
Tested both and they are good to go, Just cant decide maybe I should flip a coin.

I vote the RS200. Its cooler and fits with the rally theme. Plus you can drift it around the corners. :sly:
