But there are prizes for first, and here lies the root cause for the underhand tactics we are frequently seeing in order to take the win... A certain trophy that requires one to equal Michael Schumacher's record of 91 F1 victories... If not for that one little trophy I think racing in sport mode would be a lot more civil. People want 91 wins and will do anything to get it.

A trophy composed of bits and bytes isn't a trophy it's an ego stroke and isn't necessarily the only motivation for the bad behaviour we see. Some people just don't care for fairplay and don't care if they're racing for 1st or 15th.

So if that trophy were not a part of the game you think we'd see just as much foul play? Rubbish! I guarantee you that trophy is in the mind of at least half of these idiots causing mischief on track... The thing is, these fools have no chance of achieving it anyway or if they do it will take them years. I'm almost half way there, it's taken over 200 races but I have 43 wins. Hard fought wins for the most part. It is possible to race with honor and win.
And what is a trophy anyway? Bits and bytes or wood and gold, what does that matter? It's an award given for (usually) winning.

Yes I believe the driving would be no different with or without that trophy or any other trophy. People drive the way they drive because that's how they drive. Unless you believe that otherwise clean racers will drive dirty for hundreds of races to just get a trophy. I don't believe they would.
