What's an E50?
No - no R129 AMG model was sold in the States. An SL60 was also made, supposedly.

Lots of neat stuff on that site, as expected, but no info on when or exactly where it was sold. For example,
Wikipedia claims the E50 was sold in 1997....

It's strange, but ever since we posted a few modern-era landau cars, I have yet to see a "true" landau, like this:
Ugly as sin, but at least the landau top fits...sort of.
Yeah, that's true, I forgot about the weak transmission. But given the projected market (old people) I kind of agree with the decision to give it the auto - at least it had AutoStick. Plus if I recall correctly one of the stipulations about the car was that all the internals had to be parts bin because the cost to develop the exterior was so high that they couldn't spend much under the skin.
The target market was right, but the end result was wrong. Just look at all the drivers of real hot rods: 45+, white, male, owns at least one other muscle car. I think Chrysler's head just wasn't in the right place when it executed this concept. Had Chrysler done this now, it'd have the 425HP Hemi, a decent 5-speed manumatic or 6-speed manual, the rest could be exactly the same, and it would outsell the Viper instantly. Right car, right company, wrong time.
