It doesn't look that odd now that I actually look at the picture. I was too excited about the R8 and Maserati GT to pay too much attention to the C3 (I only see the R8's and GT's at car shows usually) It looked like it had a weird body kit but maybe it was just the blurriness of the picture.

That's actually how they were built those 2 years. They changed the bumper and removed a 2 bumps on the bottom. The bumper was lengthened enough so the optional ducktail spoiler was integrated into the bumper itself. If you didn't order the spoiler you got a standard rear bumper without it. You can see the taillights don't sit as deep in the bumper either. It's basically an all new rear end. Here's a '78 and '79 compared to the '80 and '81. I think both look great.

If you look at the grille, it has silver stripes instead if just being flat black which is an easy way of telling them apart.

Oh, and I really like the F-150 photo, the way the clouds seem to suggest an almost swirling motion, and orientation of the cars feel like they're pulling very linearly ahead, and nice lighting/contrast.
