I don't think we got the 996 GT3 or GT3 RS's, though.

We did get the GT3 just before the 996 died, but we never did get the GT3 RS "officially." There have been several that were imported to America for "track-use-only," but they weren't sold by Porsche themselves.

...I'm not even sure if we will get the 997 GT3 RS...

It's incredible - an early pick for DYSAGT Sighting of the Year. It's not the sighting that, say, an Enzo or an F50 would be (based purely on production numbers) but I'd put it in that general ballpark. It certainly outdoes the Testarossas and NSXs I've been putting up. Really incredible.

So, I've never seen an F40. Anywhere. Ever. Show, dealer - it's never happened. What does it look like? How incredible really is it? You've clearly seen at least this one before - is it really all it's cracked up to be?

It's low -- Ford GT low -- but much longer, and a bit wider. Or at least it looks that way. The red helps it stand out, as did the parking job, but you can see that thing even if it were hidden in a shipping container.

It rides and feels much like a race car. It's incredibly bare inside, even for a late-1980's car, and quite crude. The doors weigh almost nothing, and slamming them makes them bounce back. Being my first supercar ride, it felt like I was sitting on the pavement, but somehow I could still see fairly well. Looking upwards to Honda drivers was a bit disconcerting.

It drives incredibly direct, and incredibly stiff, and relatively inertia-free. Cruising seemed easy enough, but I wasn't the one handling the clutch or steering wheel. On the highway, the brief run he demo'd showed a fair amount of turbo lag, but once on boil you get that squidgy-eye feeling, where gravity suddenly turns 90 degrees and increases by 100%. My STI comes close, but only in 1st gear; the F40 did that in 3rd.

Plates were purchased within the last year - the vehicle could've changed hands since you last saw it. Probably not though, since when F40s change hands, they usually go long distances.

I guess it could have changed hands. It had the same aftermarket Pioneer head unit in it (don't ask), and the previous owner was fickle when it came to cars, having originally bought it in trade for a 911 Turbo.

Incredible sighting. Thanks for the photos. You made my night!

It sure made my day. :D

EDIT: today's theme, for me, was 'crap you don't expect to see women driving.'

The RS4 was definitely unexpected, but since the E550 had manufacturer plates, did that mean she was employed by Mercedes?

M5Power
Otherwise, just random oddities: an E36 M3 convertible (the only car ever simultaneously cancelled and released), a GMC Sierra Denali (the truck with four-wheel steering), a new S80 (my third sighting of a vehicle that came out four months ago - sales looking good, Volvo), and a Mazda MP3 (one of only 1,500) at the golf course.

Golfing much? ;)

I can think of maybe 2 cars that could top that. Well spotted.

I can think of many. The F40 had the most production of the 288GTO/F40/F50/Enzo group. The 288 GTO doesn't get out much because hardly anyone outside Europe knows about it (and I'm not even sure it's US-legal). The F40 too old for most people to drive anywhere; it's too much of a legend to risk it. Cars that beat it (in the US) would be Saleen S7, Pagani Zonda, McLaren F1, XJ220...well, it's a long list. The show I initially saw this at had one Enzo and two F40's (one on either side of the Enzo). The owner of the Enzo also owned one of the F40's (I rode in the other one), and probably half of the other Ferrari's there.

^ Agreed, this just made my day. Such a beautiful car.
Out of curiosity, is there something going through the lugnut on the wheel? It looks like theres some sort of pin in it.

Center locking nuts, with cotter pins to keep it from backing off. They're primarily used on race cars (like F1, only without the cotter pins) where changing the wheels can cost time. They also look extremely racey and cool, which is why the Carrera GT uses them, too.

This is true, but I drive the hell out of my car and my wheels will never look like that (neither will my gfs or my friends for that matter :sly: ) it's so easy to clean them and it does so much for the look of the car IMO.

Well, what are you driving? Most high-performance cars have very different brake pads that often put out much more dust than expected. I've had various Subaru's over the past few years, and the STI by far has the dustiest brakes I've ever used. Even the WRX is clean by comparison. A friend raced his E46 M3 quite hard one night, and the brakes were so overworked they spit molten brake pad onto the wheels, causing permanent pits in the paint. Needless to say, they were a bit dusty.

I wish the golf course I go to regularly had the amount of nice cars show up to it. That reminds me, hopefully the course will dry up enough from all the rain this weekend so I can go out. The golf bug has hit me . . .

Well they never look like that because I clean them regularly, my friend has the same car I do (mercedes 300E) and his wheels look worse than the E63 in that Photo.
On another note wheels with a single center lug were reasonabley common on sports cars in the 60s, cars like the Jaguar E-type and other brits had them because its rather difficult to have a lug pattern on a wire spoke wheel, I actually have some of the "knock off" lugs along with the heavy rubber mallet used to knock them off with.

I don't think we got the 996 GT3 or GT3 RS's, though.

You did too get me, just no one talked about it

They were only sold in 2004 and 2005, and went for exactly $100,000. I took that photo last July in Colorado; I took this one in October in Atlanta. They're around - just not common. And no, we did not get the 996 GT3 RS.

About two summers ago, while I was at work a Vector broke down in front of our house in Ada. I was a little mad that I didn't get to see it, particularly when my Dad or Brother had no idea what it was. They didn't even take pictures, they thought it was some kind of kit car...

A white one maintains a strong presence in Michigan. The owner is on F-chat I believe.

It depends strongly on the car. My Mazda Tribute produces more brake dust than any vehicle ever manufactured in human history; the same can be said of other similar-age Mazda Tributes. Current model Ford Expeditions suffer from this problem as well. I could clean the car daily and still have visible brake dust. It doesn't affect the vehicle except how it looks, so I don't really care to do anything about it, not that I could anyway.

The qualifications on manufacturer plates are weird. In Colorado they're issued only to representatives of a vehicle's manufacturer, but I see them often enough that I don't believe that. I think you (or, in her case, your husband) have to be employed by the manufacturer. But then why would they be from Florida? I don't even try to figure these things out.

Thanks for the F40 summary, by the way. I'd kill to see one, one day!

This morning in my village, this modded Civic Type-R, including a big set of Endless brakes and CF boot...

This afternoon outside my office, (and continuing the theme) this Porsche 993 Turbo..

Last night, an Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk III, the same as below but in black. Pictures tonight when I put my memory card in my phone...

A couple of interesting sightings today, including two firsts:

m_coupe-031407.jpg

Poor quality, but you get the idea - the first coupe model, M or not (though this is an M) I've seen on the roads. I really like the look of it.

civic_si_sedan-031407.jpg

That's the first Civic Si sedan I've seen on the road, and also, unbelievably, the first Honda I've ever photographed. Texas plates.

sl65-031407.jpg

My lotto win daily driver. Now all I have to do is win the lotto.

xlr-v-031407.jpg

Base models wheels with V badging. V wheels are pretty harsh, especially for the winter, so I'd bet it's a V. Either way it's gorgeous.

rs6-031407.jpg

rs4-031407.jpg

Both of Audi's U.S. RS models within five minutes of one another.

integra_type_r-031407.jpg

Type-R!

Whats the big sign for? "Ferrari Parking Only"?

There was a construction zone down the road; I think the sign said 'Road Construction Ahead' or something similar.

Nice shots there Doug! 👍

Thanks! :)

More from today:

mg-031407.jpg

MG TF. Less than 10,000 made over 50 years ago. As you can imagine, not too many around. Cheap, but rare.

gallardo_nera-031407.jpg

Gallardo Nera; only 185 made for the world, but I've posted this one three times now. Indeed, it gets around, though that's a good thing. In valet at the Palm in the Westin.

flying_spur-031407.jpg

flying_spur-031407-2.jpg

Flyin' Spur. California plates.

Here is something I photographed on my phone on the way home from school. I dunno the exact model name of this Pontiac, or if it's rare, but, it looked cool.

The extent of my sightings today included two Honda S2000s, one in black and one in yellow, and a 996. Do not have a clue which one though, as it was a ways up the road and I never had a chance to catch up to it. Nothing of interest at the golf course, unless you include my absolutely atrocious play today. :banghead:

Ah alright, same as in the Park Avenue Supercharged, and Monte SC? It's a really evil looking car.

Thanks JER. :)

Caught this tonight:

morgan-031407.jpg

Couldn't be sadder though - after seeing it, I went online to check the inventory at Morgan of the Rockies, the only Morgan dealer between Dallas and Los Angeles, located near Denver. Turns out it's been shut down - the former website says:

"As of December 1, 2006 Morgan of the Rockies will no longer be a Morgan Car Dealership. The dealership is being acquired by Northshore Sportscars of Lake Bluff, Illinois. The owner of Northshore Sportscars is Norb Bries, 847-247-0447. The primary reason for Morgan of the Rockies no longer being a Morgan Dealer results from the fact that a great portion of our sales was driven by the traditional Morgan which is no longer available for US distribution."

That means I won't be seeing these things anymore. Not that I ever did, as this was just the second sighting in nearly two years of chasing cars, but still it was nice to have that dealer and the possibility of an Aero 8. :(

Due to the warmer weather, the more "specialty" cars have been out in force here in GR. Unfortunately, I spotted most of them while driving, so the ol' RAZR didn't get good shots.

- Late-model black Dodge Viper GTS: It was hauling ass down 28th Street (the main drag in Grand Rapids), and certainly looked to be rather fun.
- E46 M3 (several): They're all over in East Grand Rapids, and I usually see one or so on my way to school every morning, and occasionally one at work (the manager at the store next to us owns it).

...Good news! I just bought my tickets to Miami today, so I should be able to come up with some good photos when I spend a week in Miami Beach/South Beach...

Ugh, still nothing nice here, really. The best thing tonight was a TrailBlazer SS, the same XKR Conv., and a RSX-S.

The only thing better than those (besides the Jaguar), was Michael's car.

Saw something pretty interesting today. Couldn't get any pictures as I was on a crowded bus and the particular vehicle was parked in a field behind small trees. Seemed to be in use as a towing tractor for moving the felled trees around.
*DRUM ROLL*
It was a Cuthbertson Land Rover! >>http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=cuthbertson%20land%20rover&gbv=2&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&um=1&tab=wi<<
Sitting tall on those agressive looking tracks, these things can cross almost anything. Was in a field, in order to get where it was, it had to cross a few miles of woodland and a quagmire. Go Landie!

Other sightings:
Porsche Carrera S (07 plates)
Mini Marcos

A wonderful piece of engineering, packaging, and style; popular throughout the world, and multiple race winner. And a Ferrari:

Spotted outside a bar about a half mile from my house.

Very nice quality photos for a camera in low light. What model camera was used if you don't mind me asking?

BTW: Did you manage to snap any shots of that classic Mini parked behind the red stallion? It looks to be in car show condition. 👍

Whoa...not at the car but that its leaving the driveway of the bank that my wife works at. :scared: Doug circles the area where my wife works! :nervous:

Yeah, I think it's a US Bank there on Columbine between 2nd and 3rd. Kind of weird indeed. Obviously I see lots of good cars in the Cherry Creek area. :)

Today's cars:

z3_coupe-031507.jpg

Z3 Coupe in Boulder, Colorado. Local plates. Very very few of these around.

911_turbo_cabriolet_996-031507.jpg

Porsche 911 (996) Turbo Cabriolet in Denver. Very few of these around as well - regular 996 Turbos are pretty common but Turbo Cabs have always been tricky. Dealer plates.
