I got to see the R8 in Chicago, and the looks are stunningly good. I was shocked to see how much the production version looked like the concept car, and it was a lot smaller than I had thought...

Personally speaking, I'd take the 911 on the driving experience alone. There is just something "pure" about the Porsche that the Audi doesn't have, and furthermore, the 911 Carrera S really isn't that much slower than the R8 to begin with.

Even as an Audi owner, I whole-heartedly concur. Audi is cool, but Porsche is Porsche. Still, I'm reserving my judgement on this particular Audi until I get to know more about it.

Audi offers both a true manual and that DSG thing. Its styling will make it common. I saw my first V8 Vantage on June 19, 2006; since then I've seen nine. I guarantee you that in the year after my first R8 sighting I see considerably more than nine.

This thing will sell!!

PS - it's gotten more hype than any vehicle previously described.
Oh...wow, I need to use some logic.

I thought you meant common as in really common. My bad, Doug. :guilty:

You like how it looks better, or you like the vehicle itself better?

To be honest I'm completely reserving all judgement until I see a lot more of the R8. I've never seen one in person, and I've shyed away from magazine articles about it.

Well, the magazine articles are pretty true. I saw the Vegas video of the R8 with Tiff, and it sounds a lot like a slightly softer sound of the Gallardo (Plus for me! 👍 ), and is amazing. It's been widely criticized for its typical-Audi interior, though that's not a bad thing at all, and after seeing photos, is something I like because the R8's interior is so simple, yet pure business with all kind of carbon fibre in it.

You really must see it in person, Doug. I'm already trying to arrange a meeting with one at Boardwalk with Michael when they arrive in the fall.

And since YSSMAN is throwing in his photos, thought I might too.

Tiff concluded in the video, also, that the extra money for the R Tronic is not worth it since this kind of vehicle only really shows how fun it is in 6-speed manual, despite the R Tronic lasting longer. The side panels as well, will also be available in carbon fibre after 1 year due to lack of resources at the moment.

Honestly, I would order this car if I really could. I think I could easily sacrifice the BMW and the Acura for one of these, and move into a gated appartment complex. But, the waiting list is long at every Texas dealer, and I don't have enough money to spend without sacrificing too many things.

Oh - I see where you could've taken issue with it then. I meant 'one per month' common, no more.

I can't wait to see it on the road - yours are about the two thousandth photos I've seen of it (not that they're unwelcome - the vehicle is obviously attractive - just not with my own eyes - you know what I mean) and at this point I just want to see it so I can make my own judgements. Same goes for the 599 GTB.

Give it a few years - resale on these won't hold up like it does with the super brands like Aston-Martin and Lamborghini; it'll plunge more like the 'lesser' brands (think BMW Z8, Lotus Esprit) once the novelty wears off a bit. Obviously it'll still be an expensive proposition no matter what.

Toronado
It still truly saddens me that a design as amazing and pure as the one the R8 has is so ruined by the front end.

I don't understand why people say the front end ruins it when there is a panel the size of my desk on the side of the vehicle that isn't even the same color as the vehicle. That's my biggest contention with the styling, having never viewed it in person.

You can paint body panels. You can't paint absence of body panels, especially not when they threaten to suck up more wildlife than a beluga whale.

A little note, but does any else see some major LP640 influence in the wheels? Nice to see Audi taking something from Lamborghini instead of giving.

I saw one at the LA Auto Show, and though I disliked it already, I really couldn’t handle it in the flesh:

Well, first off, I’m biased, because I absolutely hate the Audi corporate grill, so I pretty much dislike all current Audis based on that alone. Audi got it right back in the early 2000s, but the big mouth thing is pointless designer masturbation. I’m also biased as hell because I love love love Bauhaus design, and Audi had Bauhaus down perfectly (again in the early 2000s), so I’m probably doomed to hating Audi for a long time now that they’ve abandoned such a beautiful artform.

Those two prejudices aside though, I can still point out things that are wrong with it:

• It has no presence whatsoever. It looks so freakin’ tiny in real life – you can’t tell from my photos, but there was an Audi TT parked almost next to it, and the TT looked like it could eat the R8.
• As Doug pointed out, those side-panel-stupid-things. Hey look, I’m an unpainted suicide door! Ha, just kidding, I have no purpose whatsoever except to look like some vestigial piece of nothing!
• Look at the second picture that I took. Have you seen a worse decklid design? Seriously, have you?
• The wheels have forty million billion beveled edges. Seriously, just stop designing them already! Stop it!

The overall shape from the rear tires forward isn’t bad at all, but the details kill it for me.

Ok, was just curious. It does look quite outlandish, and after hearing that an Audi TT outsizes it is... odd. Just like the overall look of it, not going into details.

Um, next year, those will be available in carbon fibre, so yes, they will serve a purpose.

BTW, this hardly looks as small as an Audi TT.

Speaking of Audis, while searching for far away number plates today, all I could find was this...not even a far away plate...booo

Then I see my girlfriend at her work who says

"Stop embarrassing me, my friend came came and asked me why my boyfriend was walking up and down the car park looking at cars. I had to tell her you weren't looking at the cars, but at the number plates...."

What purpose would that be?

I'm sure its a very capable machine, but i just don't like the way it looks. Take it away from the flattering car show lights and its proportions are all wrong. Viewed from the back the cabin area looks too tall. The cab-forward shape just doesn't look quite right. Don't even get me started on those stupid Xmas tree lights running below the main headlights :yuck:

Don't worry, it happens to me too .

 In the past, it's been a litmous test for women - if they're put off by me photographing a car - even if I'm on a date with them - then they're not girlfriend material.

Well, to save weight, duh. :D

I can see where you're coming from though. It does look a bit strange, but I must admit I was set with it when I heard that V8. This car has done extremely well in magazines, and while most won't consider accurate, I believe C&D (or was it someone else? I can't remember, one of the big American mags), topped it as their #1 choice over the 997 Turbo and V8 Vantage.

Exactly my girlfriend Kate just doesn't care anymore...I actually made her buy a camera so she could among many things take pictures of cars. So far her best spotting is A new Z06, but hey at least she's trying.

Anyway I saw this today, had a paper temporary plate in the rear window which would suggest it was brand new off the dealers lot. I still think it looks Korean as hell, but whatever.

^ Oh, thats the new Saturn Vue (aka. Opel/Vauxhall Antara, Daewoo Winstrom, Chevrolet Captiva, Holden Captiva Maxx)! It looks bulkier than before especially if its right beside on that Pontiac Bonneville. (:

It's bigger then I thought it would be, I don't hate it, I'm just not used to it yet.

I need your help guys. Yesterday I saw a 2005/6/7 Shelby GT500E. I was completely confused when I saw it as I saw it from the rear. Instantly I thought it was a GT500, however when I got to the side I saw the extra letter on the bottom. When I saw the front I was dumbfounded, it looks like a normal Mustang GT, but with a extrusion thing (can't remember what it's called) on the hood. Can someone explain to me what a GT500E is? I can take pictures of it if needed, I know where it is parked.

The GT500E is the vehicle that was in Gone in 60 Seconds, remake. You may have seen a Mustang GT with one of those very strange (and possibly ugly) Eleanor bodykits for one.

A photo always helps.

It does look Korean! I hadn't even thought of that when I was looking at it - actually it looks quite Grand Vitara, which is Japanese, but that too looks Korean.

By the way, my spot today:

Tail lights did not work. One was permanently on; the others never illuminated even during braking. There's a possibility the one that was permanently on was the rear fog light and for braking he was just downshifting, hence the no illumination, but who knows. Decent car anyway.

Out of curiosity, did you Americans have that ad campaign, "Is that a Saturn?"

I used it on a new Astra with some American friends, and they thought I was legit asking if that was a Saturn.
