Some cool spots from yesterday...

f355_gts-081007.jpg

Ferrari F355 GTS - my dream car. Wrong interior color, wrong transmission, but oh so beautiful. Was towed to a bodyshop specializing in luxury and exotic cars.

360_spider-081007.jpg

Ferrari 360 Spider.

db9_volante-081007.jpg

Aston-Martin DB9 Volante.

range_rover-080907.jpg

Weird off-roading body mods on a newish Range Rover. I've never seen one so modified.

prowler-081007.jpg

Just a Plymouth Prowler, but a good photo no less, eh?

I have seen a 355 too recently, no camera. But I have to say it is one of the most beautiful car's I have ever seen on the road (apart from Aston's they still beat a Ferrari....) Great spots M5. +Rep

EDIT: Grr must spread....

Ah,i see what you mean....Doug is just awesome....can't even think how much +rep he gets from us.Like almost everyone wants to +rep him (including me) This just means one thing, either Doug stop taking photos for awhile or actually use his car capturing skills and work in a car magazine and get to do those cool spyshots or some major sporting events. At least Doug could get paid for his efforts.....

Very nice! Every time I see one I never have the time to take a photo. There is a blue one and a red one that I see from time to time, but for every one of those there is probably two or three C6 Z06s...

Kikie

Hell yes! I was just reading a review of the Copen the other day and I was thinking about how cool it would be to have one here... Of course, no one in their right mind would buy a Dihatsu in this country, but nevertheless, if they were to put a different badge on the front (Scion?), they would sell like hotcakes.

I didn't have tan leather like every Ferrari should? Awww, be a man and drive the gated manual... Thats how Ferraris are meant to be. Hell, they were that way for 50 years...

Luckily, they still can be. They're just incredibly rare to spot.

None of the Ferraris had the gated manual when I was at the dealer in Miami. I was very disappointed, as I was hoping the 575M would have had it. I dunno, there is just something about the lack of the "snick-snick" shift sound that I'd miss if I had a Ferrari, or a Lamborghini for that matter.

But, thats what happens when your all nostalgic like me...

Because dealers only order them in paddle-shift. Customers tend to like the paddles more because they're more convient and produce faster times in the right hands.

Besides that....Well, you actually have to order one to begin with. Ferrari won't build gated-manuals unless someone orders it, and again, the above applies why it rarely is ordered. Plus, you have to pay a good hefty option tag to get it.

Yeah, I'm glad I got it! :) First one I've seen around here. I REALLY like it without the racing stripes too.

Sad how the Viper seems to be slowly dying off, partly thanks to Merc. 👎:grumpy:

Hm.

I think people are missing something with auto-shift manuals. I've played with a few, and usually the engine they're attached to sounds great. So, you flick it into neutral to coast down, blip the throttle to try to get it to pop on the overrun... and *grrrrkkkkk*BANG* it puts the damn thing back in gear for you.

Bleh.

I'll take a stick anytime, even if the clutch turns your left leg to jelly and the throw needs gorilla biceps.

It shouldn't be. Dodge, amazingly, has kept the MSRP virtually the same for the new 600Bhp Viper. $83,000.
Man, and here we thought that the 600-horse Bentley Continental GT Speed was a bargain at $199K. Dragtimes.com has reportedly obtained the pricing info for the revamped, more powerful 2008 Dodge Viper. The news is good, as The New Chrysler's flagship tire-melter will start at just $83,145 for the Viper SRT10 Roadster. Want the coupe? Pony up a little more: $83,895. Bang-for-the-buck, thy name is Viper.

Of course, now one must wonder why Dodge's website allows the Viper to be Snake Skin Green (Almost Lime Green), and Viper Violet. Must be the old, but well-liked Challenger colors being experimented with on the Viper thanks to the new Challenger.

Plus, you have to pay a good hefty option tag to get it.

I thought the F1 gearbox was a $10K option on the F430, a similar price on the Gallardo as well. IMO, that price isn't justified by what you end up getting. I remember when GM used to charge extra for the T56 in some of their models, but these days I believe the 6L80E costs an extra thousand or so.

As far as I know, the gated gearbox has become the option. I've asked this a few times at Ferrari of Dallas (as if I was interested), and was told that the 6-speed gated-manual is an option, and increases the waiting time by a couple months.

The Gallardo, though, as you said, is true. It works vice-versa on the Superleggera though.

I figured it was optional now. When they said fewer than 20% of the 575Ms were going to be gated manuals, I nearly died. Too bad Ferrari doesn't have a "configurator" of sorts so we could find out...

It obviously isn't going to be as "cheap" as that of a DSG-box in a VW, but I wouldn't expect it to be much cheaper than the "E-Gear" at Lamborghini.

Paddle shift is both significantly faster and significantly easier. I don't know why anyone would want a gated manual. Say cost and you're playing in the wrong league.

Thanks for the (attempted) rep guys. No magazine work - I do this as a hobby and I love it! But as always, thanks for the kind words.

Apparantley the paddle shift is completely horrible in stop-start traffic.

It'd be worse on a supercar's manual with its heavy clutch. Also, there is an automatic option on paddleshift transmissions for just that situation.

Spots today...

db9_volante-081107.jpg

Aston-Martin DB9 Volante. Female-driven.

viper_srt10-081107.jpg

Dodge Viper SRT-10. Stll have yet to see a coupe.

Ferrari 328 GTB.

SPOT OF THE DAY...

450sel_69-081107.jpg

Mercedes 450SEL 6.9. Less than 2000 were sold here in a production run ending 25 years ago; I've never seen one on the road before and given that this one had South Carolina plates (???) I'll probably never see it again. C'etait un rendez-vous.

Not so. Paddle shift autos are great, paddle/auto-shift manuals aren't quite there yet unless you're on the track. You still have to modulate the throttle as you shift, and if you get it wrong, you look like a proper numpty as you jerk back and forth when the clutch drops.

People who are brutal with ASMs because they can be find themselves paying for a clutch every 5,000 miles. Put one through a lot of traffic, and you get the same problem. If the control unit miscalculates a bite point, at the wrong time, you get a cabin full of burnt lining smell. It's not pleasant.

If you're buying a track car - buy ASM. If you want to drive it to the shops and back or commute, get a full auto. If you want to feel like you're really driving, and be able to shift as flexibly as the brain your mom gave you lets you, get a manual.

kikie's Daihatsu looks like a ripoff of Beetle and TT, but it sure is a neat little car. And on Daihatsu cars in the States: While it was not a success in the States, people who owned them were pretty impressed. Daihatsus were different from those Korean cars or Yugo cars, when they first got their start in the States.

I hate the new Vipers(I loved the old GTS's), but it sure looks nice from this angle. 👍

Beautiful. My favorite Merc of the era.

Indeed. Definitely one of the better 360 photos I've taken. It's a car that doesn't lend itself to great photos like some of its competitors.

SPOTS TONIGHT

z8-081107.jpg

BMW Z8. Third spot of this particular red Z8. A wonderful car I noticed from two blocks way.

gallardo-081107.jpg

murcielago_roadster-081107.jpg

Lamborghini Gallardo (top) and Murcielago. Gotta love my photo-taking skills, much lauded in recent posts.

testarossa-081107.jpg

This is a brand-new Ferrari Testarossa to the area. Temporary plates. Wing mirrors are mounted high on the A-pillars.

viper_gts_acr-081107.jpg

Dodge Viper GTS-ACR. One of only 800 of these rare 'American Championship Racing' Vipers made. Seen this one a few times now.

SPOT OF AUGUST (so far)

carrera_gt-081107-5.jpg

In February of 2005 I spotted this very Porsche Carrera GT and due to the disbelief of my friends I went out, bought a digital camera, and started photographing cars. Without this car there'd be no car sightings from me, no supercar love, and significantly less passion for cars period. Since my February 2005 spot of this vehicle I've seen two other Carrera GTs and this one three times (though it's been a year and a month since I saw one and a year and three months since I saw this one) but for me, nothing compares to this car. As far as car sightings go, right up until last month's Veyron spot I still considered yellow Carrera GT in front of a small house to be my best car spot ever. I now own a plethora of Carrera GT models and toys and it still holds the number one spot on the 'will unquestionably own one day' list. It's been two and a half years since this car started this whole thing and I still love it as if I was buying that digital camera back in 2005, swearing I'd see another.

Vehicle was parked at a Denver restaurant owned by NFL hall-of-fame quarterback John Elway, whose vehicle was also there tonight.

Guess I win the 'biggest price difference' scavenger category then? With destination this bad boy was $440,000 new. Veyron is my favorite car - this is second. Thanks, Carrera GT! 👍

Doug, I'm surprised you didn't photograph that car in front of the Murcie. Roadster.

It's a replica Auburn Boattail Speedster. Seen it before; even spoke to the owner. It sits on a Chevrolet Suburban frame and uses an LT1. Cool to look at but being a replica it's not particularly valuable or that incredible of a spot. Good eyes though. :D

I see.

Well, that totally justifies the shot more focused on the Murcie. :D
