BTW Joey there was never an 8-series M... that's an owner added badge and shouldn't be there.

Wasn't the 850CSi tuned by the M team sort of? I know it doesn't warrant the M badge on the back but something sticks in my mind about that.

Good spot on the V8 Vantage!

I was most surprised that he pulled a golf bag out of the back of the car, I didn't think there was that much room in it to be honest. Someone told me it was the president of the universities car but I was always under the impression he drove a champagne coloured Ferrari 456.

Mini Clubman.

Nice, the Hot Chocolate colour is one I haven't seen yet outside the auto show. Actually come to think of it I've only seen one Clubman out in the wild over here.

Did a bit more spotting today since the weather was nice, also I wanted to play around with my GPS.

Older 911, not the best spot but I really liked this picture.

First new F350 I've seen on the road, as a plus it was obnoxiously parked.

Some sort of Alpha, tends to be rare in the states.

Jag XF

Pontiac G8, I keep forgetting most of you probably haven't seen to many of these on the road yet.

Carrera 4S, don't see many of these on the road so I thought a picture was in order.

SL500 wanting so badly to be an SL55 with the AMG badge slapped on the back.

* I was not taking the photos in any of these since I was driving.

"Sort of" being a key word. Regardless, it does not carry any exterior M badge. BTW that Alfa is a 164, their last model in the states - not too rare, but not exactly common. The people I bought my Volvo from had one... I see a 164 every month or so.

My first spot of the new Evo!

Really? Are there too many nice expensive cars that nice cheap cars usually aren't in the cards? I've seen at least two already.

Yeah - streets are clouded with Ferraris so Evos are having trouble even making it into town.

No, I'm not sure why I hadn't seen one until tonight - I had been looking pretty hard, to be honest. I never EVER see new cars immediately - took me 13 months on a Gallardo Spyder, 3 months on a Continental GTC, like eight months on the first gen Kia Sedona, ... and five years on the Ferrari Enzo :)

You can tell an 850CSi from a 850i/840i by a more pronounced aerokit and side mirrors. It is subtle, but different. It also has distinct 'throwing star' wheels the same style as the E34 M5.

It is regarded as a 'near-M', being a more through upgrade than say, a 540i Sport or 330i Performance Package (ZHP), but not quite a true M car. It is bored and has more aggressive cams, but does not have individual throttle bodies like all other Ms (sans US spec E36 M3).

It is notable for having a BMW Motorsport VIN, however. Until recently, all mainstream BMWs built in Germany have a "WBA" VIN. All official M products had a VIN beginning with "WBS". This is the best argument for the CSi being an M car and it was assembled in Garching along with the M5. However, it was never officially branded or marketed as such.

But Doug is correct; it does not and should not have any exterior M badges.

It does have a "Powered by M" badge on the top of the intake shroud. And the door handles have "BMW Motorsport" engraved it them.

I do remember hearing about the M8 Concept, designed to go against Ferraris, but they ditched it. They did, however, make a de-tuned version, the 850CSi.

I've always found it interesting that the 850CSi had more of a power hike than the E34 M5. Perhaps they felt the term "M8" was weird. It is.

Well, it was supposed to go against Ferraris but "de-tuned" is somewhat misleading. The M8 development mule and the eventual production CSi don't have much in common (aside from the unit body).

For example, the prototype motor in the M8 had more in common with the S70/2 V12 found in the McLaren F1 than the plebeian M70 based production motor in the CSi. It had completely different cylinder heads with 48 valves, a dry-sump, early version of VANOS, a throttle body for each of the 12 cylinders... an entirely different beast.

The production CSi is a bored and stroked version of the 24 valve M70 with lighter pistons, a slightly higher compression ratio and more aggressive cams for high RPM power. It was no more a de-tuned M8 than a 330i ZHP is a de-tuned E46 M3. Or a Carrera S is a GT2 minus two hair-dryers.

It's still a very special car, though. I'd love to have one.

Can someone explain something that’s been bothering me for at least 10 years now… I’ve never understood how the headlamp wipers on the first-gen W124 cars work. Because of the angle on the wiper arm, they look like they could only go up like two inches before crashing into the lower edge of the headlamp fitting. (Look at this in full-zoom in your browser.)

+1

I thought you were talking about the inner edge and I was going to call you stupid, but I agree. How the hell does it clear the lower edge??? It must be hinged higher than it appears. I'll look on the next one I see.

BTW for you doubters... that IS a Porsche sedan. land sea air can explain :)

Ferrari 328 GTS.

I can't explain how excited I was. My first older Ferrari. I was stopped turning left into my doctor's office. I was very happy. Didn't see crap at Lennox or Phipps. I snapped a pic of a Bentley GT. But nothing worth posting. I was pissed. Nice day too.

It's a 164. I drove the 3.0 V6 24V about 5 or 6 years ago, and it was one of the best experiences I've had. The car had about 210hp stock, and it accelerated like nothing I had driven until then. Truly remarkable.
Excellent brakes too.
