I've gotten shotgun latpime in a 348. Aside from the aura of it being a Ferrari and I was on one of the most beautiful tracks on the continent, it wasn't anything to brag about. The exhaust note with the Spyder was great but I've been in unmentionably lesser cars that pull harder and felt more reasonable turn-in than the Ferrie.

Despite keeping things of-topic, I feel that the F50 was the last Ferrari of that genre of styling. The 360 was a major change and the language is still seen in every Ferrari since.

Most people now agree that period magazine reviews were far too nice to the 348, which was, at the time, beginning a new stylistic trend for Ferrari (one which continues today).
I don't think Car and Driver was too pleased with it.

I personally see more connection between the F50 and 360 than any other Ferrari, perhaps that the F50 started the design language that has been used to this day. I'd say the last Ferrari of that 348's ilk was the 512M/355 (I also disagree about the 348 started the design style in the first place. That honor I would bestow upon the Testarossa).

Official pictures aside, even pictures taken for this thread, in a variety of locations, never do the cars justice IMO.

I strongly disagree and feel that the photos here pretty perfectly sum up the cars, since they capture them in "normal" settings.

That is true. It seems to be a tad difficult to capture a Ferrari's real presence on camera.

I agree with this. I have only seen two Ferrari's (though I have seen one Ferrari on multiple occasions) on the road and was extremely excited to see both. The first one I saw was while I was driving and I only got a brief spotting of it. The second one I saw was while walking to my car after class and I was beyond excited to see it, especially since the man driving it gassed it a little as he was driving by :).

I think seeing cars in the flesh adds much more excitement to seeing a Ferrari. It is great and wonderful to see them in pictures, but pictures do not capture the aura that a Ferrari gives off when seeing one in the flesh. Having seen a Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 McLaren, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Lamborghini Gallardo, and Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder (and all of them out on the road), I can honestly say that none of them excited me as much as seeing both a Ferrari 355 and 355 Spider on the street, though I should say seeing the SLR 722 and Murcielago LP640 were especially exciting. Maybe I was that much more excited for seeing the Ferraris because it was only recently that I saw my first Ferrari on the road--and had been waiting for forever to see one on the road--but there is just something about seeing a Ferrari on the road that makes the sighting much more exciting than seeing other exotics.

There's something special about riding a bicycle up an Italian city and hearing a Ferrari woosh past you - I spent the whole day looking for it afterwards, but couldn't find it. Even more than almost getting run over by a Lamborghini.

And nope, these events are not imaginary - I even caught that same Lambo parked later on.

Those are made a few miles away from my house, and they're everywhere around here.
Kinda like Doug and Ferraris/Lambos, but on a scale 100x bigger. :D

Stop discussing the THING...

Today:

DB7 Vantage Volante...

If I call it a Jaguar we can get daan to come in here and tell me how I'm not funny.

Well... it sorta was... AML just made it a lot prettier, and plusher too. And when the V12 went in, they pretty much did have to re-engineer the whole car, so it wasn't a Jaguar anymore realllllly.

Don't buy an earlier I6 Auto. They were all supposed to have 335hp, but they didn't. The auto engines were lucky to make 300hp at the shaft, and by the time they had the guts wrenched out of them by the slushbox, they were not quick cars. The manuals were much better.

The best early DB7 of all? There's a one-off out there prepped by the Works Service with an RS Williams fettled Tadek Marek V8 in it. Apparently, it went like stink.

The one to have is a DB7 Zagato Coupe. All the Zagatos were based on shortened V12 Volantes. The coachbuilding is comparatively fragile, but the most harmonious of the modern 'double-bubble' renditions, and in the flesh it's a fabulous looking car, especially inside with all the quilted leather.

Can't wait for an equivalent VH-platform Zagato... but it seems more and more unlikely with each passing month. :(

On this one, our perspectives are vastly different. When someone spots a 360, I know how that feels. Hell, I should, 'cause I've seen 47 of 'em. You on the other hand haven't seen the same number of exotics and thus feel they have more on-road presence than I do. Honestly, my heart rate only increases anymore when I see the really crazy stuff... but I completely understand where you're coming from. It's all a matter of perspective.

Disagree strongly! The one to have is the DB AR1, which is not based on the shortened chassis and is absolutely gorgeous.... of course you UKers weren't lucky enough to get your hands on that bad boy. :D (though I heard ONE DBAR1 went to the UK and a few went elsewhere in Europe)

Apologies for my poor contribution recently. Horrible weather, a dodgy camera and busy office are my excuses...

Im sorry i have no pics, no camera other than my phone which is rather worthless.

Anyway just got back home from school where i saw nothing but average cars. In the last 3 days i have seen the following on the road or at stores (ie. we have Porsche, Audi, Ferrari & Maserati dealerships but none of those count to me.

Bentley Continental GT
Bentley Continental GTC
Bentley Continental Flying Spur (2 of them)
Maserati Quattroporte (multiple)
Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II
Ferrari 360 Spyder
Mercedes S63 AMG
Merc C63 AMG
Merc CLS63 AMG
Audi RS4 Convertible
Audi A8 W12
Lotus Elise
Aston Martin DB9 Convertible
BMW M6
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (I guess not comparable to the rest, but first one ive seen)
Toyota Supra Turbo (again not comparable, but rare and classic)
Multiple Porsches

Not keep in mind i drive a 98 Ford Explorer and couldnt afford a single one of these cars, but most of the time i was riding with friends in a Audi A6, Porsche Cayenne, and a Lexus LS. However nothing on this list tops a car that i would never have thought to see, at about 100 units per year its pretty damn rare:

Spyker C8 Spyder

Thats just a file photo, but it was black, not sure if it was the turbo or not, but i saw it again parked at the same place so im gonna try to get hold of a digital camera and get up close with it.

My spots from the past couple of days, nothing quite as fancy as Doug's or even Serge's but thanks to the weather it was the best I could do. Not the most fancy shots either thanks to such a long start up time on the camera. :ouch:

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud? Perhaps?

Anyway, thats it apart from some dealer spots which don't count and will probably appear in the Photography Thread at some point.

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud? Perhaps?

Silver Dawn - '49 to '55. I used Wiki to check production numbers and it said 785 of 'em were made, whereas 7500 of its twin Bentley R-Type was... but that is definitely the Rolls. A better spot than you realized, eh? :)

Wow. Yeah, makes it much more rarer than I thought. Thanks for that Doug 👍

Just out of plain intrest, when I was taking the photos of the cars, I somewhat felt guilty. I don't know why, I just felt guilty that I was perhaps doing something wrong. Does anyone else get this feeling or is it something I should just ignore?

The C8 is truly an amazing car to see in person. 👍

Saw a red Continental Flying Spur today as my top spot.

Ignore it. Sometimes I get creeped out that an owner will be upset but just remember this is in public and thus is completely legal. Just move along quickly and all will be all right. :)

Yeah i've bottled it on a couple of occasions due to people saying WTF is he doing? Last oen I can remember was in london, of a brand new white bentley Azure. Which brings me neatly onto the subject. I'm heading into london tommorow and having lunch at planet hollywood; Leicester Square. So I'll be checking out the dorchester hotel and kensington etc. and can amost garuntee something special, but dont count your chickens eh?

I'll report back tommorow evening.

Thanks 👍 Glad to hear that others have experienced what I have. I hope to take my car spotting more seriously from now on. I used to just write the cars down in a little "notepad" since then I've been keeping the camera out and ready just incase. One of the main probelms I have is often getting the camera to turn itself on quick enough. Also taking photos of cars heading towards myself I find quite difficult too. Any tips?

Thanks. 👍

Depends on the camera. My camera, a Minolta Z20 (not an SLR, but a cheap, slightly old single-lens), seems quite suitable for spotting - 8x zoom, decent low-light shooting, and about a second to turn off and focus on a well-lit subject. Also, the functions are easily accessible - all those handy functions, from shutter-speed to ISO values, are quickly adjusted.
