Looks to me like a genuine 7, though probably a Caterham that someone has fitted Lotus badges to. Good enough though 👍 Looks "too" genuine to be one of the many kit replicas.
It's definitely not a Lotus Super 7
(at least not in it's original form), not because it is a LHD, as some LS7 cars were fitted with LHD, but it is the gilled hood that suggests it to be something else... However, as you say, it is possible that it is a Caterham 7 with Lotus badges
(although who ever thought it was a good idea to swap badges needs a thorough lashing), as it did come with gilled hoods
(although the pattern doesn't look quite the same as I remember?).
For those with an affection towards the Seven, on that same visit to
the Dino, I also came across the predecessor of the Seven, a
1953 Lotus MK VI Roadster:
I'm not sure how many are still in existence, but I believe only 100 were ever built, and I suspect very few are in as good of a condition as this. Truly a remarkable automobile. 👍
However, that Beta you spotted is so much nicer! 👍
I think road going Karmann Ghia's are a bit rare, I think I've maybe seen one since I started driving.
It depends on where you're looking. In the Bay Area they are very common... and often regarded as the poor man's Porsche back in the days. It is especially common in Berkeley, where I think it was often regarded as the Hippies' Porsche.
So on my first day in Berkeley and what do I find outside of Saul's
(the finest deli style restaurant outside of NY... oh and Katz's in Austin of course! )...
A Hippie Porsche.
