I don't think you'd get many objections. If not Elises, definately photograph Exiges as those are fairly uncommon over here. 111Rs are always welcome.

I definitely would not object to pictures of the Elise, as I have only seen two of them. One of them was at a dealership in St. Louis, while I was on vacation there, and it just happened to catch my eye passing by on the highway. The other was on I-35 coming back from the OU game at Texas A&M. In fact, both of the Elises I have seen were yellow.

I didn't realise they were uncommon to some. I've seen dozens of them - in fact, my local Ferrari dealer (Ferrari of Denver) has so many of them that there wasn't enough room for them in the showroom, so they had to keep them outside - even during the snowstorms!

Part of it may be where I live, as I do not see a whole lot of anything. But for the most part I am not going out looking for cars and not looking in the areas where the cars will be. So pretty much anything is going to be nice.

Any idea on how many came to the States?

According to Wikipedia (which has been wrong in the past), about 6,745. That doesn't make it incredibly rare, but any mostly-intact 30-year-old British sports car is kind of a miracle in itself. I just thought it was a neat old car.

And Elises are kind of rare around me, too. Real sports cars of any kind are rare. To see even a Corvette Z06 is refreshing. The Northeast is so conservative, preferring SUVs and German sedans to spend $40,000+ on. It's both depressing and frustrating: generally non-discriminating taste, and few pictures to grab. :indiff:

Sometime soon a gluttony of pics will be up from my vacation to Maryland, including one standout Mercedes which is either very rare (because I've never seen or heard of it before, nor have I ever seen Doug take a picture of one) or very common (possible as well).

My line of questioning is due to the fact that I've never seen one. It's a great sighting. 👍

It's like that in Denver - the key is knowing where to look!

Exciting! It had better not be a 190E 2.3-16... not that I'm not interested in photos of those, but Harry just got one a couple of days ago.

I finally saw an Audi A3 in America. I know, it's been out for over a year.

Sorry, I don't have a cameraphone, but I didn't think I needed to back my claim up.

I'm not sure what it was, but we were in Adelaide yesterday, and i saw a Ferrari like this one:
Hamann-Ferrari-360-Spider-RA-1024x768.jpg

Thats not the actual photo.

I didn't have my digital camera with me:( but it was on the back of a truck wiith it's hazard lights on, as if it had crashed.

I also saw an Audi A4, a couple of R33 skylines, and a few Audi A3's, but the Ferrari really made my day.:)

And it had prestige on the back.

Plus a mystery car. Avacado purplish, probably lighter (vimto colour) with a flat rear panel like a Ferrari 250. Definately a sports car, 1960s era, didn't get to see the front end.

'Avacado purplish' :odd: - aren't avacardos green???

A flat rear panel, like that of the 250 GTO, is usually refered to as a 'kamm tail'. Purple (or avacardo green for that matter) is more of a 70's colour than a 60's one. Once i've fully awakened i'll search around for pix of likely suspects.

Did it look anything like this?

An Opel GT.

Sorry, I did mean Aubergine :dunce:

It wasn't an Opel, I know my Opels :sly:
Definately had the kamm tail, but had a less severe windscreen angle than the Daytona (also recognise Daytonas). More 'flowing'. Looked 1960's-70's, no later, possibly a kit car, but just got a few seconds of seeing it at a glance, so just took in what I could, didn't hear much exhaust note, but it was probably cruising that section of road (slight downhill). I'm in South-West U.K if that helps eliminate cars at all.
Cheers for the help! 👍

I was with my friend today when I spotted this, and instantly got my Camera out. He's like "It's just a Celica". No...
dsc00429ey5.jpg

It's a Group A Rallye Celica GT-Four. One of only 150 imported to Australia. And 5000 in the world. One of my best finds.

Not spectatually rare, but kind of uncommon here. Also the truck in the background makes it a very Australian shot.

Porsche Cayenne S

Right. So I did a little Wikipedia-ing and found out that the amazingly rare Mercedes was nowhere near as rare as I thought it was. I was just ignorant to it. Either way, lets get everything else out of the way:
The Groom's car (I was at a wedding, you see) and an Ubaru (Best Man's car):

A Mini. Belonged to brother of groom:

Just some Volvo:

Just some 'Vette:

A Mercedes ML350. One of approximately 350,000 in Maryland.

A nice E-class, if only because it is a 4Matic.

A new Lexus GS. A rather surprisingly rare car in Maryland, because they are as common as hell around here. Down there most people go for Beamers and Mercs, I guess. Though this one was an AWD model, and last gen. GS's are common as hell around the capital.

The best Corvette ever made:

A Porsche:

A Range Rover:

Another ML350 (this was before I came up with my entirely factual account on the amount of them in Maryland):

A new Suburban (father of the Groom's car):

And the Mercedes formerly known as rare (parked outside a GameStop, if you believe it):

There were more cars that we saw on Sunday when we went to the capital (I'm considering posting those pictures up to), and there are a few cars I missed.
I also have a few pictures from the trip that I still have to get off of my camera, including a hot Lexus and a car that doesn't deserve to be in as good condition that it was in, but was still nice enough to nearly overlook what it was.
I also regretfully missed a few nice cars, notably a 740 Turbo Wagon that was seen on Sunday, a Corvette ZR-1 seen on Saturday, a Audi S4 seen on Sunday and a Ferrari 360 Barchetta seen on Saturday.

Now, for some Maryland fast fun facts (Triple F's):
  • There are six types of cars in Maryland, apparently:
  1. GM Full-size SUV's
  2. BMW 3-series of various years.
  3. Mercedes ML 350's
  4. Toyota Prius'
  5. Lexus RX300s and 330s
  6. Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions.
  • No one in Maryland can drive.
I'm serious. I saw at least 4 accidents per day.
  • Roundabouts are dangerous.
Most of those accidents are at roundabouts, which is odd because I've never heard of them being a problem around here.
  • The best driving roads are always connected to churches.
Seriously, my Dad's Neon vs. My uncle's Civic Si is the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a car. Too bad someone ruined it by crashing about 3 miles from the end of the road.
  • The Washington Parkway is the best highway ever.
It's like Martha Stewart designed it, for chrissakes. All of the guardrails are made of cobblestone, and the road is Autobahn-smooth the whole way.
  • People on Maryland highways are crazy.
Seriously. My dad was already pulling 80 on most of the highways and interstates, but pretty much everyone was going at least 15 MPH faster.
Which (doesn't really) brings me to my final point:
  • No one loves domestic cars in Maryland.
Seriously, I saw, like, 5 Chevrolet cars in the whole state. Domestic SUVs, however, are everywhere.

My line of questioning is due to the fact that I've never seen one. It's a great sighting. 👍

I've seen one before, years ago, but only in passing. Back then, it took some looking to figure out what it was, almost an hour later. :dunce:

It's like that in Denver - the key is knowing where to look!

I generally know where to look, but winter is winter, and I see that even you are having a little trouble finding stuff. A little.

The following shot is not mine. It's from a co-worker. However, he doesn't post images anywhere, and this one deserved to be posted somewhere.

Lamborghini LM002

Seen at a gas station by someone my friend was driving with. The sun kind of washes it out, but you can clearly see the general shape, the twin exhaust, and the badge on the right side. I didn't think anyone would drive a 20-year-old Lamborghini in a New England winter, let alone a super-rare Lambo SUV. Not your typical-looking owner, either; and he got a bit paranoid when my friend kept staring at it before realizing what it was. :)

I also regretfully missed a few nice cars, notably a 740 Turbo Wagon that was seen on Sunday, a Corvette ZR-1 seen on Saturday, a Audi S4 seen on Sunday and a Ferrari 360 Barchetta seen on Saturday.

360 = Spider
550 = Barchetta

Yeah, the 560SEC is relatively common. A high school friend of mine had the sedan model (aka 560SEL). It's the least common of the lot though.

Fortunately Atlanta will be good to me - they're predicting 50 and sunny for Saturday! Harry you'd get a kick out of this - the first five minutes of the news tonight were devoted to the possibility that there might be ice on the roads tomorrow. They went through a whole thing about how you'll need to use extra caution and how they'll post school closures as soon as they get them. School closures due to ice. These people should come up to where you or I live!

It's a horrible photo from a horrible angle. It's not even your picture, so it probably doesn't even belong here.

But it's one of the best sightings of this thread, and I couldn't be happier that you posted it. I'm in awe - it's one of the cars on my list of "cars I love to see but never will." Right up there with the Miura, Porsche 996 GT1, and McLaren F1. Any idea who owns it?

Top notch. 👍

By the way, I guess I have to keep you guys coming back until Saturday - here's something that probably rivals Harry's LM002 for rarity:

camry_landau_top-011607.jpg

January 16, 2006 - Atlanta, Georgia

Yep - it's a landau top on a '97-'99 Toyota Camry. It's not even a nice Camry - it's either a mid-level LE or a base CE. One of the more stupid things I've ever seen...

Haha! Classically awful! Reminds me of a Cadillac Allante (good looking car) for some reason. It's been said before about many owner modified cars, but I'll say it again... Why!?

Toranado where in maryland were you for your trip? i live in maryland and I'm sure that ive seen that SEC at a mercedes meet, though the plates do say Alabama it wouldnt be that unusual to see somone drive that far for a meet. while the car is not rare, the color combination is.

Chaser_Fan, the Allante was a convertible, not a vinyl top coupe. But I'm not totally sure what you said there. Oh, I just realized one of the teachers at my school drives a Pontiac Solstice GXP. :D

You Corvette looks more like a Caddy. :)
Yes, that was a joke.

I dunno. I saw that on the way home. I'd have to look at my GameStop receipt (MGS3: Subsistence ftw!) to see where it said the store was.

Anyone who thinks the beltway (ie 495 Maryland interstate) is a good highway probably hasn't driven the whole thing, some parts are Autobahn and others are just horrible, don't even get me started on traffic. I will agree about Maryland drivers being crazy though seeing as I'm one of them:scared: :scared: and never mind about that SEC the one I'm thinking of lives in Tennessee and has plates to match.
