DiRT Rally Thread

Just wait until you try Sweden's finest tracks in a suicidal RWD 70s car...
That's exactly what I did and I hated it. It's almost impossible to drive straight and you can't even use full throttle as a result.

You're not supposed to. Good stage times come from keeping your momentum up, which you do by maintaining your average speed. You should be running at around 90km/h-120km/h depending on the class of car. There will be times when you drop below that, like coming out of tight corners, in which case the key is to know when and where to get on the power; likewise, there are places where you can run at higher speeds, and you have to keep the car as settled as possible. This is not a game where you come steaming into a corner and expect to come out the other side.

If you're still having trouble with the RWD cars, try loosening up the rear differential and shifting the brake bias. You should also look at using a semi-automatic gearbox; you will be able to short-shift up to third which will neutralise the excess traction.

I'm disappointed with the team management side of things. I have four mechanics worth 8,000 credits each, and a team rating of 63. They can fix just about anything that I do to the car in the time allowed. There doesn't appear to be any further point to it except getting one achievement.

I think it's meant to be more of an immersion thing, to give you the impression of being involved. The system in an almost identical state was used in WRC 3 but tellingly enough wasn't in WRC 4 - so maybe you aren't alone in that.

I know that this is VGChartzzzz, so please, take it with a grain of salt. Still good news though. I hope that this is certainly true and the game will have long legs. I wonder what the retail vs. digital ratio is.

The racing game - DiRT Rally - sold 175,224 units first week worldwide at retail, according to our estimates, which can be viewed on the VGChartz Global Weekly Chart for the week ending April 9th.

Breaking down the sales by platform, the game sold best on the PlayStation 4 with 124,171 units sold (71%), compared to 51,053 units sold on the Xbox One (29%).

Well, it would be better if the perks system applied to more than just the upgrades - like boosting individual stats, like +10% radiator skill.

You can select engineers with higher skills for specific tasks like radiator repair too, if you wanted. Also, the perks seem to apply to other areas than just the upgrades, such as 4WD vehicle speciality, specific cars or even cars from one country.

I'm at Elite level right now in most categories, which means I earn more than enough CR in order to hire/keep the best Engineers (85). I just spend 200,000 CR every 40 stages or so and forget about it.

Coming into DiRT Rally, that's what I was expecting, something akin to what you would typically see in an RPG. It's a nice addition either way, I'd like to see more sim racing games feature the team aspect of motorsport.

The difficulty starts to get crazy once you reach Elite level. Though it could also be because I'm really struggling to get used to the Renault 5 I chose to run. In Greece it's amazing, and I won the rally because of it. But in Monte Carlo, it was a bit of a misery fest. It would understeer; oversteer; understeer some more and then decide to just do both at once somehow. I don't know, don't ask. I eventually binned it off a cliff, and this made me happy because it meant I could stop driving it. The car just really struggles at tight turns, I noticed it in Wales too. With only two rallies remaining (Finland and Sweden), I feel like the car will either be amazing, or end up in another retirement. :P But considering I've climbed back to 2nd, it's doing well.

I am the master of Hell. I got my backside handed to me on a silver platter around Lydden Hill and Höljes in the Masters championship, but I won every heat, the semi-final and the final at Hell. I won by such a great margin in the final that I could have jokered every single lap and still have enough time to pull over and do my taxes.

Best Rallycross track IMO, only problem can be suicide AI in final heat, who try too drive through you too get too the joker

That's why you either joker on the first lap and avoid overtaking anyone once you get to the final corner, or joker on the last lap of you're confident enough to take the lead and hold it. The best joker strategy is always to take it on the first lap after everyone else has taken theirs.

Hell is also good for the Monster Energy Supercharged achievement - if you start on the front row and take the joker on the first lap, you can blast past everyone else, even if they get the jump on you at the start because you don't have to brake until you hit the gravel.

I usually do that anyway because I'm slightly paranoid about rubber-banding. I don't think there's any in this game but it's best to cover my bases. I'll only Joker on an early lap if my line through the previous corner means that the non-Joker corner is sub-optimal.

Well so far in 'career' i'm onto the pro championship in the E30, good to see we get snow/rain now and night stages now, my E30 had no upgrades and i'm literally treating this first season as a means to develop the car, happy to just drive at about 90% for now. Never ever played a game where i'm happy doing that, PCars is close but I like to win in PCars too much.

There is some - the other drivers in your heats and semi-final will be consistently quicker than every other driver. It's not uncommon to see the five AI drivers in your semi-final with a faster overall race time than the six drivers in the other semi-final.

I've had a somewhat interesting experience whilst driving the Peugeot 205 Evo 2 in the Professional Class lately. For starters, I thought that I would absolutely suck and fail to get into the top 5 with the thing. Well shock horror, I did. I won the rally in Finland but the car was destroyed to the point where the engine was starting to cough and overheat. However, the little Pug soldiered on and I produced something worthy of greatness. Video will come soon if you want to see for yourself...

I've noticed that, but what i was referring to was me having a 3-4 second lead reduce to almost nothing within a few laps.

As for "your run" being better than the other Heats, I'm guessing it's because there's a difference between the "real" times (where you actually see each car do their laps" and the "simulated" times (which are likely randomly generated within a certain range based on difficulty level).

I'm sorry but there is an elephant in the room, where is the rain on this game? Or am i missing something?
What stage of the championship are you at? You don't get rain, snow, mist, night stages, etc until you get to the later championship. It basically ups the difficulty as you progress, but in the custom rally and championships you can set it.

oh okay, thanks, i'm currently doing the rally championship on professional. Had plenty of night stages, but haven't yet encountered rain. cheers.

No rain in Greece though (which is fair enough, though for sure it rains in Greece IRL, lol), or Sweden (you get snow fall)

So far I won 60s, 70s, 80s and I'm first after 2 rallies in Category A with Colin's Subaru (professional difficulty). I skept Group B for the moment, not really able to enjoy it with my current skills.

I have to say that from professional level you really start noticing the effect of upgrades (at least on the Subaru) and the difficulty increase. I always rank among top 3, but sometimes by deficit is over 20 seconds, especially in Greece were i get destroyed (even if i won due to first place retirement).

I' m not really sure i will be able to compete at something more than professional. Overall difficulty level is very insane, if i think of myself 15 years ago i would have never gone through the first open round with a pad. Sometimes i have to admit it is a bit frustrating which is not really my ideal mood when playing. You really need to memorize stages.

Moreover after 4 championships i'm starting to notice and feel the lack of content in terms of rallies and stages variety. The game is amazing but in my opinion these are the "letdowns":
- fake cockpits
- terrible liveries when original one is not available
- it needs more rallies, surprised Australia is not in or Corsica / Spain
- overall lack of rally atmosphere (rally intro, audience, paddock etc.)
- it needs a career mode that gives you the idea of progressing

I think that for dirt rally 2 they will need to focus not just on pure driving but also aim at creating a context for it. Something like WRC4 from milestone or V-rally 3 on ps2.

I kinda take issue with the championship format itself which bears more of a resemblance to your typical football league table. Promotion spots up for grabs for the top 3 drivers and relegation spots for the bottom 3.

Though that's partly because I was locked into a Professional championship with a car I didn't intend to use, and me trying to force my way out of it without racing whatsoever meant finishing dead last by default. Something I wasn't aware of until it was too late, but I suppose it's pretty much par for the course in terms of Dirt Rally-tier penalisation.

At least that cock-up gave me the chance to improve on my previous Clubman rally result and upgrade aother car before going into the next level of difficulty.

Has anyone got an opinion on what the best car is in each class? would be interested to know, particularly, the Group A and 2000s. thanks.

The best car in Group A I've found to be is the Impreza, well balanced and forgiving (especially for derps like me  ). From my basic expierence so far:

2010's: Ford Fiesta
2000's: Ford Focus (2001)
Group A: Subaru Impreza
1980's: Ford Sierra
1970's: Opel Cadett GT
1960's: Alpine
