DiRT Rally Thread

So far I won 60s, 70s, 80s and I'm first after 2 rallies in Category A with Colin's Subaru (professional difficulty). I skept Group B for the moment, not really able to enjoy it with my current skills.

I have to say that from professional level you really start noticing the effect of upgrades (at least on the Subaru) and the difficulty increase. I always rank among top 3, but sometimes by deficit is over 20 seconds, especially in Greece were i get destroyed (even if i won due to first place retirement).

I' m not really sure i will be able to compete at something more than professional. Overall difficulty level is very insane, if i think of myself 15 years ago i would have never gone through the first open round with a pad. Sometimes i have to admit it is a bit frustrating which is not really my ideal mood when playing. You really need to memorize stages.

Moreover after 4 championships i'm starting to notice and feel the lack of content in terms of rallies and stages variety. The game is amazing but in my opinion these are the "letdowns":
- fake cockpits
- terrible liveries when original one is not available
- it needs more rallies, surprised Australia is not in or Corsica / Spain
- overall lack of rally atmosphere (rally intro, audience, paddock etc.)
- it needs a career mode that gives you the idea of progressing

I think that for dirt rally 2 they will need to focus not just on pure driving but also aim at creating a context for it. Something like WRC4 from milestone or V-rally 3 on ps2.

Yes all totally fair, I agree with all of that, but still fond myself muttering "this is the greatest game ever" under my breath in a weird repeated chant as I steam along Finland in the E30.....
Its that type of game for me, I can pick loads of things I wish could be different but once the co driver says "GO" I forget it all and just savoir it!
Another great thing about this game is that if you'd written what you just wrote about a certain other racing game then you'd be jumped on and ridiculed...

One of my friends summed DiRT up for me the other day he said and i semi quote as roughly remember it all:

"I hate Finland! I hate Sweden and the snow banks!! I hate the mental Group B cars!! I hate the night stages!!! I hate crashing at the last turn before the end of stage!!!! I hate how hard it it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... BUT wow...this is the best game I've ever played!"

The higher levels are certainly challenging. On some stages in Elite/Masters you're expected to put in times that would sit within the Top 50 drivers in the world. If you can win at Masters then you have every right to call yourself a strong driver, as you need to be that quick to compete in the first place.

Personally I like how the Career is set up and I do feel that sense of progression. If I'm good enough to finish in the Top 3 in a Championship then upping the difficulty is fine.

I have found throughout the Career that with each successive Championship I am usually within a few seconds of the fastest AI times on a stage. That's good progression right there; I am getting faster but still getting challenged.

This isn't a game where I can expect to win every race with ease (like in Forza or Gran Turismo), it's one that's pushing me to go faster and up my game. I like that.

Started my first Elite championship last night with an undeveloped 2007 Focus, managed a forth in Germany in the first event.

Ten stages with rain on the majority, the challenge certainly steps up.

Anybody else on Masters? It's pretty damn difficult, the MINI Countryman seems like a bit of a dog too. Managed a 3rd in Sweden and now in Germany for round 2.

Not yet, still on the Professional level championship as that darned 'flu and now Ratchet & Clank have taken up my time.

Trying to give this wonderful game even more exposure than it already has. I'm creating a 3 article series that tours the locations avaliable in the regular rally mode complete with gameplay modes.

Hopefully people can see just how varied the locations are. 👍

In a defense of the liveries, or lack of, it does lend a nice sort of clubman feel to it with sponsor-less cars, same way PCars worked with that feel of club racing. For sure I'd far rather choice of 'proper' liveries to go along with the blank ones, but yeah I can work with it.
Blasting around in a pure white E30 with just a number on it feels about right to me as I just pretend I'm just some clubman rally dude rather then having to pretend I am actually driving in the WRC.

I was hoping the PC version offered the ability to add your own liveries via the Steam Workshop, but unfortunately the only way to do that isn't quite legitimate.

It's s bummer, after playing Cities: Skylines, basically the only other PC game I play, which has amazing Workshop support.

Hi guys. Quick question.

I've only just got the game (loving it) and barely tinkered with it. Started open Rally and an open Rally cross.

Using the handbrake start in Rally cross and I get smoked of the line (Mini Coopers).

Do I need upgrades? The AI set off as if on nitro. Other than that it's all good.

Finished 3rd overall in Rally Mode and went up a level. Haven't gone back to Rally cross.

I've been starting noticing the awfully similar collision physics from G:AS in during rallycross races and it's been getting on my nerves. I had to rage quit two times at Höljes because I was getting the short end no matter what I did. A slight bump could mean me ending up facing in the wrong direction while the AIs themselves are almost immovable.

^That doesn't sound good. Do they still have sticky collision physics as well? In GAS if you rear end someone the AI would slow down and "stick" no matter if you try to shake them loose. You have to literally slow to a crawl to disentangle your car. Drives me up the wall sometimes.

I haven't encountered that problem though I wouldn't be surprised if they did the share the same code when it comes to collisions. But don't let that discourage you from getting game. It is an annoyance in rallycross but it's also easy to look past when the rest of the game is superb.

Bit of a random thought/question after somthing I noticed today

Does anyone else think the driver face model looks a lot like Kris Meeke

I agree with the comments about the Renault 5 Turbo - it was really good for me in Wales, but it has struggled in pretty much every other rally, especially on tarmac and hairpins. That night stage in Monte Carlo on the ice was a nightmare.

With one rally to go in the Pro championship, iam in 4th - and hoping the 3rd place guy has a disaster hehe. Although i wouldnt be too bothered if i stayed on Pro level....need to think about what my next car will be. Maybe the 205 or the Quattro.

But im still just loving the challenge of this game.

Has anyone got an opinion on what the best car is in each class? would be interested to know, particularly, the Group A and 2000s. thanks.

I'd honestly recommend testing out the cars yourself as it completely depends on how you drive. I tend to do better in cars like the Stratos, and the 037 because they slide with ease. More understeery cars tend to result in me trying to slide them which often leads to falling off a hillside. But that doesn't mean you'll find them the easiest, infact a lot of people tend to say the examples I just gave are some of the hardest cars to drive.

------

I finished my Elite Championship in 2nd, the lead driver was 1st or 2nd all championship minus one round where he got 7th. So even though I was 2nd in Sweden, and won Finland, he was 1st in Sweden, and 2nd in Finland. So no championship for me. Though the game has now put me into the Masters championship, and it's at this point that I realize something that I'm not sure I really like.

Though I did win my first stage on Master difficulty, driving a Hayden Paddon livery i20 in Sweden... With mist, on a long stage I could not for the life of me recognize most of. I love the way the car's suspension dips, and how easy it is to just lock up the brakes to slide around the turns. I just wish I had a sequential shifter, because it feels wrong using paddles... And while I'm at it, I should look into handbrakes because that would be cool!

I got 2nd overall with the 60s Mini, now i bought an Ibiza but i'm finding trouble to get trough Wales (2dn place in Sweden).
I tried Rally Cross (bought the 207) but I'm definetly not good at it.

I think Sweden has a much easier level of difficulty and i'm generally faster in Germany and Monaco. Greece and Finland are my personal hell. Especially Greece.
