DiRT Rally Thread

There was a multiplayer mode in one of the previous DIRT games (can't remember which one) where you could do a standard rally stage online against 5 or 6 players but all the other players are ghost cars, you can see them but theres no contact, loved that idea, really pilled on the pressure when you see another player sneak ahead.

I know it's a sim at heart and might be out of place in this game but i do really miss that option, the single player is challenging and well just brilliant but can't get on with multiplayer rallycross at all, every corner i am just waiting for someone to punt me off from behind.

Meanwhile in career mode after stepping up from the 60's to 80's to 2010's and now in group b its a whole other story, all that power and the snow banks of sweden are not a good combination lol still so much fun tho :D

Agree 100% loved this mode.

Well ive managed to sneak into the Elite championship without winning a single rally in the last 2 seasons....consistent 2nd - 5ths go me there aswell as the odd AI capitulation....is this a good or bad thing? Consistency is better than winning the odd rally?

I've managed to get into Elite without winning a single rally or championship. Consistency is indeed the best option for me, given just how challenging Dirt Rally is, I consider it a good thing.

Yeah, there always seems to be a lead guy that wins a champioship, and i cant get anywhere near him...he might have one bad rally out of 6. The other AI can have very mixed results.

I cant see it being as easy to progress in Elite! I think the Quattro will be my weapon of choice this time

I'll say its a good thing, not every top level driver in WRC or even F1 has had to be a previous champion at some level.
I think the football league structure suits the game, the game never pretended to be anything other than just a game simulating rallying and doing it well, for sure if you heard the game was content rich like the official WRC games then you'd be disappointed, but for what it is it awesome!
Its so weird for me that i'm happy to just be partaking! OK i'd like to be wining, but at elite in the E30 i'm just happy driving and pushing where i can and learning about the car etc. Its just a fun and rewarding game and theres no "just release it and cover up/spin the issues" feel to it, so many games these days in all genres seem to do this. Never have i been happier to of paid full price for a game (and i like to get them cheaper few weeks months down the line).

I'm on track to get forth in the Elite championship on my first run through it, which I'm quite happy with given that I started it with an undeveloped 2007 Focus. I think with a fully developed car that I may be able to sneak into Masters.

You approach this game same way as me! I'm currently developing the E30 in elite and loving it. Not looking for wins unless an AI has a disaster.

Yeah im approaching the same way, being consistent and seeing what happens. I personally love the promotion/relegation thing...you know who you need to beat as the championship draws to and end! Do you guys use the restart option? Obviously if i didnt use that it would be an even greater challenge. I fell down a dark Monte Carlo cliff a few times.

I'm allowing myself restarts yes, its a game after all and as such I have no problem doing that. Having said that though the debate about driving games "not having feeling of consequences like real life" for me are put to bed with DiRT, hammering along in Wales on a long stage getting towards the end the feelings I have are not "well I can press restart" they are "OMG, breathe...relax..whoaa, close...OK lets hold back a bit and just get to the line..."... OK I know i can't crash and die but I don't think any racing driver at the point of driving in the moment thinks of death otherwise they would stop, they just think "if i crash its rally over".
I have had stages where I'm green but then have few scares then I just hold back... that's a crazy thing as that's playing with your real life sub conscious, when ever I do track days I do think about wreaking my car (i dont think about death or injury) so don't drive over my limits (unlike some!) Same as GTA games made me realise i can't just randomly shoot people for no reason even in a game....lol.

I've not used the restart option in the Championship mode at all (only when messing about in customer rally), as I managed to refrain from using in in my Pcars career and wanted to stick to that, hell I try and avoid using the reset to track option unless I have no choice at all.

Is it just me, or are you permanently placed in Elite once you make it? I got to Elite in Rallycross, promptly got destroyed by the opposition (except at Hell), and finished in the bottom three - but I didn't get relegated to Masters.

No idea - but I'm sure I will be able to confirm once I get to Elite and get murdered on every stage.

My guess is that you need to win Elite before the game allows you to start it all again - until then, you'll likely be stuck in Elite.

I'm confused now, i'm not in elite yet then, I must be in Pro, without having to boot up my xbox whats the full structure?

I cant even get promoted to professional on Rally Cross atm! Keep coming 4th in finals....i guess i need to fully develop the Clio.

im reallly enjoying the challenge though, treating it as a seperate game. It kind of reminds me of the old PS1 TOCA days as in you are racing familiar everyday production cars like the Clio and Corsa.

Plus the fact i have an RS Clio 182 myself! ;)

I meant Masters. I always get Elite and Masters mixed up. I was grinding through it to raise money until I gave it up because my hands were aching; I'll go back once I wrap up Assassin's Creed Unity.

Having barely scraped a win in Open '60s rally, fought for 3rd in Clubman '80s RWD and later improved in the same tier with 2nd place in Group A, my Pro Group B championship win by a vast points margin felt like a fluke. Especially the Monte Carlo win. There I struggled more than usual with the S4 and yet every other driver in the top five ended up retiring or bogged down with time penalties.

Spencer in particular would always be miles ahead of the pack in terms of raw pace on all rallies except Germany, which was the only one I dominated outright. But then he threw away what would have been a comfortable win on all but one occasion since he damaged the car heavily by stage 7 in the other four rallies.

I could have even translated my worst results (two 3rd places) into a pair of 2nd spot finishes had I been half a second quicker in each instance. But consistently getting into the top three while most of my would-be rivals suffered from heavy points losses at least once in the championship made big wins all the more easy.

I love how the they nailed the feeling of how raw say the E30 feels compared to the VW Polo WRC car, this game more than any other, IMO.
Also how the FFB you can let the wheel spin back through your hands like real life after a hair pin. It doesn't have that awful snap back to center effect that PCars has, I really want to get rid of that in PCars, I can get FFB perfect in PCars but that snap to centre thing really annoys me.

I was thinking of using the S4 for my next attempt at the Elite Championship as its easily my pick of Group B 4WD.

I drive the S4 in Career, it's a well-balanced car that you can think about pushing hard in. It won't snap on you like the 205 does.

That's what I've found in the daily and weekly challenges I've used it in, on this weeks one it was great to drive in both Wales and Finland; in fact the two long stages in Finland this week were utterly great with it.

I just noticed that the BMW M3 in the menu has an Irish registration (88 D 21323). I checked it out and it turns out it belongs to a red 1988 Toyota Starlet 1.0. Codemasters got the colour correct though.

Yeah, I saw the Irish plates too and was curious. I wonder what cars we can get from the other numberplates in this game (the ones that aren't obviously references to DiRT/McRae).
