I personally can't say that I won't support Polyphony Digital at all but I'm going to make a point...
I think that Gran Turismo is one of those racing games that you must have in your collection, you can tell there is passion behind it and you see that the game was made for car lovers, but not too sure if for the actual gamers though, based in what we have and how things were made.
I also think that PD is a little bit lost in a couple of things:
First one being the marketing department and how they are trying so hard to sell us the game we already like and know, adding things to it that most of the people don't care so much (GT Academy being one example, but is something out of the actual game actually).
The second thing and I think is the most important, is what PD is trying to do with the car list and features, they are trying to give us something but they are not hitting the nail at all when it comes to actual content. Yes, we have "a thousand" cars in the game and some features (half or more of them used once and then forget) but are they giving us what we really want after all? What I'm trying to say is that games and the market changed a lot over the past few years, people are not buying something if it doesn't have what you really want. Before, people bought things because of the name/or brand (some still do that...) or because they knew what it was going to be in the box 100% assured (no DLC's or the game being updated with "missing content" that should come with it at release -but is not only happening in GT-)...now is all about content, is all about certain basic things that should be included in the game as something basic, if you fail to deliver that you are screwed.
Look at other examples, see what Forza series are doing (I don't own Forza but I follow what Turn 10 is doing), they have a consistent package of good tracks and a very good list of cars (sometimes it feels that they read GT Planet and take what we ask and then put it in their game...), cars that they know people want or like (with sense and taking a look at the actual market with new released cars and such, cars from the moment), and then they keep adding even more.
In Gran Turismo I never feel that the list of cars "was made for the people", even with that amount of cars and mostly repetitive models, it feels like you are playing other's game (Kazunori's game maybe?)...
pCARS is making a game based in what people is asking, the list of cars is small but yet you see those cars and want to drive them all and the tracks as well. You have races, practice, qualifying, flag regulations, racing with the same type of cars so you can make a realistic competition not based in fictional "PP" systems or such (also not "racing for the rabbit"), vehicle damage, all that can be turned on and off, set AI difficulty...etc. I mean this should be a basic thing in a racing game and the majority of racing games have it, even fully arcade ones.
Gran Turismo 6 is a great game but with lots of flaws (car list overall, standard cars -do you think it is normal to get inside of a car in a racing game and all that you see is a black simplistic interior like something not finished at all?-, the sounds of the cars sounding nothing at all like the real counterparts in the real world...nothing at all), and bad designed features like the proper racing which is not how it actually is in the real world as well, with also improper IA design...
You know how hard is for me to say that GT is not as good as it was, how hard is to put other game or other simulator as rFactor 2 and race in it feeling quite great, with so many simple mechanics (realistic ones, like races with practice and qualifying!! plus actual pit stops), great AI which feels like racing with good real people/players at some points, with a small list of cars but all different yet capable of making good races between the same ones (Clio Cup cars for example, how good it feels to race against the very same cars without seeing the AI slowing down in corners making you feel that you are faster but having actual great competitive racing even while not online...etc.
Is really hard for me to put Gran Turismo 6 again and have good times with it (I just play it once updates comes out to get the cars)...I understand that some people play only GT, but if you try something else you'll see where GT is failing the most and then it will be hard to go back...really hard.
I'm waiting for Gran Turismo 7, if they don't deliver a consistent game overall this time I'll pass, still and for the first time I didn't get the Play Station 4...I had them all but this is the first time I see barely a reason to play in a console since you need a subscription fee to play online and games are not exciting as I also expected. Playing on PC a lot lately, upgraded it and I'm having fun with a lot of non racing games and having almost all racing/simulators...just can't go back to GT.
I'm an objective person, but as much of a fan of GT I am, I can't deny what is wrong with it. Hope that PD ditch some crazy ideas, use more common sense, and finally give us a proper Gran Turismo game, hopefully a finished product as GT4 was.
