Oliver Solberg was one of the fastest players in DiRT Rally 2.0 and he used chase cam because it gives him the feedback from the car he is missing in real life.

He's also played WRC for 50 hours already.
Since you have been working with Oliver for multiple times now, does it mean it he'll be more heavily involved in development and giving feedback on the game?

@PJTierney can I use the controller for the photomode even if my wheel is connected? That would be very very helpful since you can't save replays if I understood correctly and photomode with a wheel, well you know ;) Would be great if you could shed some light on this :D

Of course, even if it's "arcade" I know I'll play anyway so who am I trying to fool :).
Except for me at least, if it feels dumbed down, especially if on purpose, aka market reasons etc, the flashy looks and sounds will feel shallow fast, and I'll lose interest after a couple of days.

So the Early Access release on the 31st is 7.00UTC/8.00GMT.

Wont stop me checking Steam downloads at 12.00AM on the dot however...

Hyped that another car from my childhood memories of Gwyndaf Evans/Howard Davies is included in the form of the Ford Escort MK6 Maxi Kit car. (The Seat Cordoba WRC too ofcourse)

Howard Davies may not be too well known outside of Wales but he is a Brilliant Character. Nowadays he's a TV presenter on the Welsh Rally show Ralio. He has a really good Youtube series on the Ralio channel where he visits numerous Rally Prep garages like Phil Mill's Viking Motorsport, Melvyn Evans Motorsport and even a 2 parter at M-Sport from last year.

There's a famous story that when Gwyndaf Evans got signed to Seat to drive the Ibiza F2, Seat had to pay Howard a substantial amount of money to get him to lose some weight so he could continue Co-Driving for Gwyndaf.

Something to watch while waiting for Tuesday :gtpflag:👍

Pt 2 is a nice look around the lovely Collection of cars on display at M-Sport.

Oliver gave handling feedback in the early stages of DiRT Rally 2.0 I think.

Photo mode, I am sure the game will recognise wheel and pad at the same time, F1 does, Forza does.

Yeah, that's the exact reason I use chase cam as well!

Also, if you need a quote for the box:

"I use chase cam because it makes me less ****" - cutback73 ;)

I use Bonnet/Tcam mainly in racing games/sims. Forza Horizon 5 is perfect with chase camera for me though.

I have an issue that I can't stand movement in the onboard camera so I have to put the cam sway/movement to 0. It's fine until you get to bumpy places like Argentina in DR2.0 and I imagine Kenya in WRC23.

Yeah I like the feedback from chase cam, especially in narrow stages. But I’m also a sucker for good car models and visual effects, lots of work goes into that so I like to use a view that shows it off. And in the case of CM games, the audio is 🔥.

It’s not that I dislike cockpit cams, I’ll use it if I have to in hardcore mode clubs and stuff but I’m just not as fast using it.

I just can't connect to the car when it's in front of me, especially if it's pointing in a different direction to the one I'm travelling in.

On the other hand cockpit view blocks out a lot of my peripheral vision so bonnet cam is a good compromise between that and chase cam for me.

Bonnet cam is definitely option 2 for me, or roof cam in the case of some games. Like Gran Turismo was always roof/bonnet cam since GT4, can’t stand the rigidity of the chase cam in Gran Turismo.

I agree on the chase cam being really weird. I guess you have to grow up playing arcade chase cam games for years to get used to it, maybe?

Personally I use bonnet cam in DiRT games, GRiD games, Forza Horizon games and the like where it's a stable view with good visibility. However it also depends somewhat on movement as @RYAN mentioned: FM23 is an example where the camera moves a lot in bonnet cam when you brake, which puts me off it so I use zoomed in cockpit camera instead.

More serious track racers usually force cockpit camera, but there tends to be the ability to zoom in from cockpit cam and just show the dashboard: AC and ACC let you move the view forward and hide the steering wheel while giving you a virtual mirror, whereas Forza Motorsport has a separate dashboard view which also hides the wheel, however this view doesn't let you use a virtual mirror which is very annoying.

Mirrors are pretty much useless in rally sims of course (except DR1/2 with Rallycross).

The movement of the camera can be adjusted in the F1 games aswell as DiRT Rally 2.0 so I hope WRC23 is similar. Like I alluded to though, It does make the more bumpy stages/sections quite jarring. Better than the loose and inaccurate feeling of the camera moving around though in my opinion.

I tend to switch between chase cam and cockpit view all the time. I often like seeing what I'm driving, but on the other hand cars are much easier to control in cockpit view.

I don’t think that’s the case. Preference is just preference really.

I also spend enough time looking out of a cars cockpit in real life so it’s nice to get a different view sometimes 😆.

I got used to it pretty quickly in Horizon when I needed to use it for drift zones. Any kind of racing though and the mode leaves me lost.

What seems weird to me, however, is why players would want to force any kind of mode on other players who don't prefer to use it by prohibiting them from changing options in lobbies or calling for options to be removed from games.

The same goes for people who don't want others to use assists or even automatic transmission. It can't be a desire for realism since cars in real life have traction control and auto shift.

I don't drive a car in real life.

Good old fashioned gatekeeping. Absolute worst thing in any topic of discussion. People on Reddit berating real rally drivers using chase cam even though they’re some of the fastest DR2 players.

Whatever makes it fun for you is the right answer to the question.

As a VR user and driver in real life for 34 years, I use hood/bonnet or close dash cams. Chase cams are out of the question for me, they feel weird and defeat the purpose of "driving" in a "realistic" game with a toy wheel in front of me, but I understand why some prefer chase cam for various reasons.

What irks me are the cockpit cam elitists who say any other cam is not hardcore or "realistic". Well, anyone who drives in real life or has sim raced in VR should know why 2D cockpit cam is the least realistic next to chase cam. When you drive a car the dash does not block 60% of the view. Your eyes are focusing on the road and surroundings through the windshield and the interior of the car is only a blur outside of your focus area.

It's bad enough playing on a 2D screen with its inherent FOV restriction and lack of depth perception, but at least dash/bonnet/bumper cams open up important real estate on that already limited flat screen. Blocking 50-60% of that already unrealistic and reduced view with the car interior is more akin to masochism than realism.

In VR you are locked to cockpit cam but for the same reasons as in real life, your eyes focus on the road and the interior all but disappears from focus. This is why so many people are faster and more consistent in VR than pancake. It's the ultimate way to play. Why anyone would want to cover a flat screen with interiors that don't block your FOV in real life is down to pure elitism. I understand the immersion part. Especially in games like Gran Turismo the interiors are beautiful and it's cool to be able to look at them in cockpit cam. But you are not enhancing realism by forcing yourself or others to cockpit cam. Quite the contrary, actually.

I will take this opportunity to implore EA/Codemasters to please look into supporting PSVR2. There are hundreds of thousands of us waiting for another racing game. Make it a DLC like DiRT Rally. We will pay for it!

I use cockpit on DR 2.0 and whilst I understand fully what @Pfei is saying I love it. Conversely I used bonnet cam on the WRC games as yes, cockpit felt too restrictive and dark and wooden. On DR2.0 though, I love the way the car moves in relation to cornering/braking/acceleration when sitting inside the car, I find it truly immersive 😄

And to anyone who cares, in response to my previous message last week I've just cracked the final Colin challenge in Scotland in the 6R4, it was so tough but so satisfying to have finally nailed it!! Just in the nick of time, I will now allow myself to play WRC in a couple of days time !!!

Yeah, I'm exactly the same, dr2 cockpit all the way.
I also agree that in KT wrc games it's stiff, lifeless, and restrictive, but it's gotten better from 8 to 9 and to 10 for me now.

And can see how dash and hood povs are cool to use in those and other racing games like ac.
I do try it from time to time.
Even 3rd person but rarely, mostly in open action games.

But i still use cockpit pov in kt wrc games, just feels more like sitting in the car etc.
Although i sometimes find the perspective skewed maybe, the proportions, like the car is wider than it feels from that view, and i sometimes bang on sides of road obstructions like rock walls that i thought i could slip by.

But in ea wrc, i noticed cockpit seems stiffer than in dr2, and closer to kt games, which is another thing that worries me on it.

Plus collision physics, i did see instances where the car goes over a larger gravel or small rock, or hits a weak fence, and its like hitting a cement wall.

Congrats! It’s very satisfying to get that one. I think I can pin point one corner where you can gain the extra few decimal points of speed, near the end there’s a 3 left don’t cut just after a jump, the faster you can attack the jump and cut the corner the better. Can almost go flat if you angle the car right.

I’ve ticked off a couple ones that have been bugging me this week, the fastest start one in rallycross, the Yas Marina lap time one.

The one I’m struggling with is one of the secret achievements, sub 7 minute run on the Newhouse Bridge stage in the Impreza S4. Down to a 7.09 but struggling with more pace.

I've got a number of DR2.0 Steam Achievements left to do I actually dicided to work on a few today. Pretty much all the ones I have left to do are easy but time consuming. Like the Historic Championships. 8 WRX Wins in the RallyX mode Etc.

I am looking forward to completing the remainder of the Colin Mcrae DLC. I've done the more difficult ones. Just the more time consuming multi stage ones left.

Probably what I will try and occupy myself with tomorrow. 😊

Nice. I really enjoyed the McRae pack. I think I’ll have a few runs at the Newhouse Bridge stage to get that achievement.

Mostly I’ll be doing my final day of league running on WRC Generations. Played teams leagues almost exclusively and daily in that game since launch. 10 promotions in and we are 1 promotion away from Legend tier, been a lot of fun climbing the ladder with my dad and brother and will be my lasting memory of WRCG. So 2 dailies with 3 runs on each, then 3 attempts at the weekly which is where promotion can be snatched with a good result.

Then come Monday the game will get uninstalled to make way for the new one.

Just managed this with DS4 and default setup. Still made 2 slight mistakes but Having not played DR2.0 for a while It was fun, My run just before I narrowly missed out by half a second as you can see. Good refresher ready for WRC in a couple of days. 😊

@PJTierney I've just rechecked the info on the 309 GTI and in 1988 it entered the rally scène with a 1.9 8 valves engine that delivered 166 BHP at 7000 RPM. Maybe your team could address that since in WRC it only has 140 BHP which is not correct 🫣

This kind of thing historically can always be changed in Codies games. Both F1 and DiRT Rally 1&2 have had a camera stiffness/movement setting.

Thanks! Actually that corner was one of the ones I'd usually mess up after 6:30 of driving. I backed off for it despite the following huge straight. In fact my run was almost perfect, I ended up overshooting at the end of that straight, went straight up the embankment before the final hairpin, had to reverse up, I thought I'd messed up again but nope just about got it!
I carried on playing for the rest of the evening in various cars on the dailies and weeklies, the game is amazing, god knows what's coming!! 😍

Good luck with your run! 👍
