Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis

I can't find where I found it, but someone here on GTP predicted that there would be either a tsunami, earthquake, or some other massive natural disaster from the recent solar flare...

Just saying, some people were doubting him but what if that's true? Something that messes with the Earth's magnetic fields..

It could be true, but saying "some massive natural disaster" seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's a big world, massive natural disasters happen all the time even without solar flares. The chances of something happening that would fit that description would be pretty high, I would think.

Without some sort of actual check of causality, or at least a proposed mechanism, it's impossible to tell the difference between something caused by the solar flare and something that just happen to occur simultaneously with the flare.

@Swagger897, as @squadops linked for you @Dotini suggested that the recent whale-beachings and sunspots may be to blame rather than a CME. Whale beachings and other peculiar animal 'phenomena' have often been anecdotally linked with pending natural disasters.

There is, however, no correlation between solar flares and earthquake activity.

Chances are they didn't.

And you know this how?

The chance that a viewer of the appeal was a donor varies wildly from country to country. The US are very generous compared to the niggardly Brits, for example. Nonetheless I think it's a fair wager that the number of people who are prepared to donate the time it takes to post a message of support on an instant-access social media thread significantly outweighs the number of people prepared to make a longer, more involved fiscal donation.

Of course. So you don't know either?:sly:

@Swagger897
The discussion of space weather is probably best pursued in a different thread. I've been looking into geophysics, heliophysics and the sun-earth link in the ten years since my retirement from Boeing. NASA's "Living with a Star" program has dozens of satellites and hundreds of physicists and engineers working on these questions, and I try to follow their discoveries and explanations closely. Space weather is real. But it's complicated and so far not sufficient to make predictions of specific events.

Yeah.. to me I can't think of any logical explanation, and I most likely have no where near the amount of information that you know, but I was sitting on my couch the other night watching CNN and thought about that...

No, I don't. It's down to an estimation of the chances such as the one that @RS1600Turbo gave. On balance his estimation seems reasonable.

Do you know? :D
Wellll...I didn't want to say anything...but last Friday my knee began to ache a little...and then it rained on Saturday...so....

Let's add another one to the list, shall we? 5.5 Magnitude quake in Mexico. No reports of damage, hardly any news outlets posting about it probably for that reason.

Must be the bean soup I had the other day. Every time I have bean soup it seems there's an earthquake somewhere.

Never mind the fact that there are just as many earthquakes when I do not eat bean soup.

...or the fact that there are about 4 a day somewhere in the world. And I'd be far more worried about the one off Japan at 5.7, but that's not on the news either because it's not really news.

EDIT: At the time of this post there had been 29 earthquakes of +2.5 in the world, hardly surprising that the news channels don't keep us posted on them.

Any more being predicted?. Earth seems to be like a woman who's birth pains are intensifying.
Really praying for those families hurting and confused.

There is no currently accepted, proven and totally reliable means to predict earthquakes.

However, I will tell you that more frequent and destructive earthquakes and volcanoes are associated with solar activity, including flares and CME's. The heliophysical and geophysical mechanisms for this are under study, and I'm following this. It is increasing being discovered that the sun and the earth are linked in a complex system.

We are currently going through a cyclical solar maximum, although it is an odd one.

Pretty sure 2012 wasn't a documentary

27 so far today at over +2.5. I'm not sure that Earth is like a woman with intensifying birth pains... so far today she hasn't hit me, spoiled a pair of my socks, informed me that I'm a bastard who will never touch her again or crushed my hand in a grip so tight that my bones liquefacted.

I predict that tomorrow will see somewhere between 30 and 50 +2.5 quakes, incidentally. Cus science.
