Ebola: I Guess We Are All Going To Die

HIV is already a massive killer in sub-Saharan Africa, quarantine is probably the only option to prevent the virus spreading overseas. Also, how long does the virus take to manifest itself once someone had caught it?

It's why we have such strict quarantine procedures. In fact UK health authorities have issued a warning to GPs and the port authority to look out for symptoms just so we could contain the virus in the unlikely event of it reaching Britain.

The Playstation 3 is the only way to prevent being infected with Ebola. You stay indoors all day any don't have to talk or touch people.

Wait until you join the PC Master Race.

Britain is probably the safest place to be right now in terms of the outbreak. No borders with other countries, it must be easy work for the port authority. I wish I could return there in case of the more likely occurrence of the virus reaching the southernmost point of the continent, where I currently reside.

Not necessarily. It isnt the most dangerous, either. An asymptomatic host could make it in undetected until it is too late, land or water border.
I read (I think from a link in this thread) that Paris is the most likely point of European entry, as it has the most direct flights to (from) the affected area.

How does that work if you don't know you are infectious?

That's the point of quarantine. If you come from an area where a disease is endemic or where there is an epidemic, they will lock you up in quarantine until they can verify that you're well and non-contagious.

If you are sick and/or infectious, they put you in isolation. Think of quarantine as a holding pen where they determine whether you need to be isolated or whether you're free to go.

It does have a border with Ireland, silly. :sly::mischievous:

As for the virus itself, I don't see it spreading into Europe... well, unless terrorists get their hands on it of course. I'd keep a pretty close eye on Boko Haram if I were an American spy. D:

They'd require half a brain to realise the potential to wreak havoc with so much as a few hugs and kisses

What I meant was the landmass of Great Britain (Wales, England and Scotland) not having a continental border.

Rumor control, here are the facts:

Location: Africa, Sierra Leone, Nigeria. One case in the Philippines.
Fatality rate: 75% to 90% depending on the Ebola. Death is caused by high fever, exhaustion and internal/external bleeding. No cure, no effective treatment at the moment.
Incubation: 2-22 days. Victims are still contagious for 7 weeks after recovery.
Carriers: bats, cockroaches feeding from bat guano, chimpanzee. ''Bush meat'' should be avoided.
Death toll: around 800 people have died from Ebola, 2 helpers from the US have been infected with Ebola, one might be transported to Germany for treatment.

Rumor: according to some ''experts'' the epidemic is already out of control and it spreading to the rest of the world is inevitable at this point.

Discuss!

Well it's already travelled by plane narrowly missing the US and it's looking like it's easier to contract than made out because people wearing ton's of protective gear are getting it including the lead doctor treating the outbreak in Sierra Leone who just died.

The problem is it can incubate for 22 days so someone can easily be fine when they get on a plane and only weeks later start infecting others. Airport quarantine is going to be ineffective because loads of people might have it and not show any symptoms.

Just a thought. Are there any cases of a survivor contracting Ebola again a second time? Does the human body develop a stronger resistance to it?

I'm getting a bit nervous here already...

In case doom would strike and it contaminates our countries what would you guys think would be some sort of protection? Wear facemasks and surgical gloves when going out?

Better safe than sorry...

Ebola: I Guess We Are All Going To Die

No guessing - You can't get away from that truth!

An interesting read from the people on the ground - MSF Operational-update

While it has indeed spread to neighboring countries, the situation in Guinea (where this outbreak originated) has stabilised and in many areas is dropping.

This is also good to hear...
During seven weeks, 21 people with the disease were admitted to the centre, with an astonishing 75 percent of patients making a recovery.

It seems more resources are required to tackle it more effectively. I'm sure if this was happening elsewhere big governments would be be ploughing more money into it. To prevent it spreading, perhaps they should anyway.

@Michael88 - Your avatar is showing some signs. It might need quarantining.

When an epidemic is inbound just stay away from crowds and don't touch people when greeting them. Avoid public toilets at all costs. Wash you hands as often as possible, never touch your face. Buy food before everyone is raiding the malls. Buy sealed food only. Don#t forget the packaging of the food is contaminated. After exposure put your clothes into the washing machine and take a good long shower, make sure your hair is really clean because hair is like a sponge. Increase your vitamin-C intake and stay fit with sports to boost your immune system.
I'm cautious when the flu is raising its ugly head every year, last time I had the flu (or any other contagious illness) was over 12 years ago. In a doomsday-scenario you should cover your mouth, nose and eyes.

I actually do have a professional military protection mask with good filters and NBC gear, but when you need such equipment you either have made several bad mistakes or the world is really ending. Its the last line of defense.
Said equipment can save your life, but it can turn out really dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Most people get infected with illnesses when they remove their contaminated gear or use depleted filters. You have to be careful when handling contaminated equipment. Keep in mind that viruses can survive tenths of hours hours outside their hosts / blood.

I have served in the NBC corps so I know that its best to avoid situations altogether where you need protective gear. Things get really complicated once you find yourself in a contaminated area.

If you still think it will turn really badly for humanity and you need protective equipment buy a NEW full-face quality protection mask (which fits your face perfectly) with international military standard filter screw threads and NEW P4 class filters that are rated for microbiological hazards. (P4's are, just to be 100% sure) Filters last for 4-6 hours depending on the humidity and th physical activity of the wearer. Wear disposable latex gloves.
Oh, and don't forget to shave, beards can affect the seal of the gas mask.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg though, there are many many more things to consider, like decontaminating your protection mask and so on. Lets just hope that nobody is going to need that kind of information anytime soon.

Best thing one can do i think is stack up on canned food and pasta, buy water and should doomsday break out stay at home for a couple of months until the worst is over.

Exactly. Like I said, its best to avoid situations where you even need to think about protection. If you are smart you can stay at home and sit it out.
