*Scratches head* *Goes to start typing* *Stops, scratches head again*

Say what? :D

It's just kinda interesting for me. For the longest time, I couldn't explain to people why I was always itchy, and it's also a different kind of itchy – it's more of a numb tingling. (In the course of writing that sentence, I've scratched my head 5 times, my leg twice, my left arm 3 times, my neck 4 times, and my big toe once.)
Damn you Sage! While reading your post I scatched my head twice, my 'middle' toe one, my eyebrow one, my cheek one, and my right arm twice! Wait, now I've scratched my head 3 times, YOU SUCK! :P

Blake

I scratched my back 6 times, face twice, eyebrow twice, armfold thrice, and shoulder twice. I hate it when it tingles, because it's almost impossible to fight the urge to itch.

heh, after looking at menglan's sig id thought id join :P i have eczema on my arms wrists back of my legs feet, i used to have dry skin on my scalp but that seems to have gone away right now

i use something called Betnovate C- Ointment for my arms and wrist which is quite strong and it seems to be doing the job

Schweet. * scratches neck* you're in. *scratches shoulder* It's so ridiculously Itchy right now!!!

Yes, it stinks! It is because our governor, who I dislike, made a law that school had to start after Labor Day, so that the Wisconsin Dells could finish their season. As a result of school starting later, school also ends later.

THis sounds like another case of Sucks to be you! :dopey:

Notice to sage and any other GTP'ers still dealing with Eczema: I went to a chiropractor to see some if some left-field treatments would help me out, and a candidia treatment worked wonders! But, I still have it. just not nearly as bad. (It's a treatment to destroy the candidia bacteria)

So... Just a little tidbit if anyone's being driven crazy by atopic dermatitis. :)

I might have it, but I'm not sure. I have a patch of dry skin on my foot and on my hip that itches very little, but mostly it's just kinda bumpy and a little red. It's like a rash but on very dry skin. I've tried lotions but it doesn't seem to be going away.

Anyway I don't know if that's Eczema or something else.

Could be psoriasis.... I hope it isn't, though.

THis Chiropractor is far in the outfield compared to traditional medical practice, and considering I've been around the bases twice already, it was worth a shot.

wtf. Getting adjusted helps skin rashes? blasphemy. Sure, it can help internal stuff with muscle and nerve pain, but the integumentary system? pfft.

Yo I got it. When I was a baby I was always covered in it, but then it went away for the most part. Now it's coming back with a vengance on my back. Luckily no one really sees except on my arms where it left light spots in my tan so I'm all polka dotted on my arms.

The most efective thing I've used is hydrocortisone ( can't spell that too well ).

Ish. what do you thinks sends the feeling of itchyness to the brain?? The big thing he did was an herbal treatment to destroy the yeast bacteria, which is medically proven to irritate skin. Not only women get yeast infections.

Also, I get acupuncture. Chiropractors might be a little out there, but they make pretty good sense if you think about it.

I see we've got a new member.:)

Well i wasnt expecting to find a Eczema thread on gtp when i woke up this morning! Yea i have it too although the docter says i have psoriasis (very similar to eczema) which is kinda worrying because psoriasis is apparently caused by the persons mental health, for isntance stress can cause flair ups or if im particularly nervous about something. It seems to be passed down through the family as my grandad and my mum have it too although to lesser degrees the further down the chain i.e me having the lowest degree.

The best things i have found to keep it down is

- drink plenty of water (i dont drink juice drinks etc, just plain water for me)

- Moisturise regularly

- When it does flair up i use a cream called E45 which is available here in england not sure about the rest of the world. It helps with the temptation to scratch, makes it feel much much better and seems to help it heal quickly. Its really good stuff and i cant reccomend it enough! Link below

http://www.blushingbuyer.co.uk/acatalog/info_C110.html?sentby=froogle

- And oddly enough try and enjoy myself, not get stressed or feel pressured which is bloody hard unsurprisingly

I by no means have eczema/psoriasis as bad as some people i know but its still a pain in the bottom when it does flair up!

Spec....

I don't have it, but just a question...Are you born with it or can you acquire it in some way? Sounds like quite an annoying illness to have :(

Well i would say its something you are born with although it may not be apparent that you have it at first. I have had it since i was little and as i have gotten older my flair ups are less intense and only happen after prolonged periods of stress etc.

Seeing as my Grandad and my Mother have it too i would hazard a guess at it being genetic. Im fortunate though because i have seen people who have really serious cases and find it hard to be touched or anything.

Ah ok, thanks for the answer. And there's no apparent cure for it either? :\

I have eczema and have had it for my entire life. My skin in general is alsways in pretty bad shape.

Tell you doctor, if he has any sense he will perscribe you something that works. I've had this stuff called Westcort for a while, and it cures it in 3 or 4 applications (2 days). It's magic, and my doctor gave me like 5 fill-ups of it. It definitely works.

My skin sucks. words can't describe how much I envy people with clear skin who aren't tempted to itch and scratch and mutilate their outer covering.

Yeast is bad. the Candidia bacteria occurs naturally in almost everyone, but as many women will attest to, candidia is very inflammatory in nature. Infections can occur in men too, and foods that are high in sugar or are high in yeast(even though cooking kills most of the bacteria) are generally to be avoided.

Also, don't consume anything with Phosphoric acid. If you have Eczema or Psoriasis, H3PO4 is the devil.

Specialized: Oh yeah, stress is bad. If you are under lots of stress, it could turn into impetigo..:nervous: Try to breathe in deeply or think of something else, as our habit is to scratch when we get nervous.

The single best topical Stroid is Clobetasol Propionate. It wipes away my Eczema and dyshidrosis(nasty crap I have on my feet) in a couple applications. But, I can't use it anymore. 17 years of topical steroids off and on, and my Doc says that they can thin the skin layer.:scared:

Dang.. This thread is kinda old!

Psst.. join the Eczema club! (Not that I'm proud of my magical color changing skin)

Oh, also.. If you have to scratch, (admit it.. it feels good, but it's bad.. So hard to stop!0 use a soft bristled hairbrush. They don't open up the skin and cause bleeding, so it's better than fingernails.

I know eczema is hereditary. I got it from my mom and she got it from her dad and so on and so forth. I also know it can prevent you from gettin certain vaccinations. I can't have a smallpox vaccine cuz I have a higher risk of dieing form the vaccine.

Bumpity bump bump

So, in the past year, my eczema has gotten a million times worse… it used to be contained to one area at a time, but earlier this year it decided to spread over almost my entire body (including my scalp). I have to spend about an hour every day putting on several different lotions, ointments, and Jojoba oil. I can’t even study in the uni library anymore because the A/C dries out my skin in an instant.

A few months ago I went to see my doctor – he had a new resident doctor thingamajig look at me. The new kid said he also had eczema, so I thought Great, he knows what it’s like!, but all he did was refill my steroid ointment prescription, which as eczema sufferers know works great on new spots for about two days and then immediately becomes useless. :grumpy:

Chris, anything been working particularly well for you lately?

eczema isnt contagious or anything
and no one in my family has eczema so i dont thing its hereditary

Most forms of eczema are hereditary. Hereditary diseases aren’t usually single-allele–dominant-type diseases… genetics is much much much more complicated than that. Eczema is likely controlled by at least several, if not many genes related to the autoimmune system.

Sage,

Aha! Lucky you are that I have actually been on GTP!

That sucks. Like.. Big time. I am soo sorry. :(

Ok. here's a road map. (I'm not trying to be patronizing.. just throwing out a bunch of things that may have contributed)

1. fewer, colder showers. Shower one every other day, and try to keep the temperature down. The colder, the better. water is an irritant, and hot water irritates better than cold.

2. Brown soda is bad. Swear off it entirely. H3PO4 is satan. I cannot stress this enough.

3. Candidia. Just as bad as H3PO4, but more prevalent. look into a candistroyer formula. You've probably spent your whole life running within the field of regular western medicine and treatments.. go way off to the left. I think harmony health systems sells one formula of candidia destroyer. Yeast likes sugar. maybe see if reducing sugar or milk intake does anything? (I only say milk because the bacteria in our processed milk is pretty inflammatory)

4. Continue to use steroids, but in a tiny amount. Do compound creams work at all for you? 1% triamcinalone in some store brand moisturizer as a coating, with another heavy-duty steroid as an emergency reserve.

5. Stress. Tearing off the dermis is a hard-wired response to stress, but it tends to cause problems.

OH!

I remember what I did last year.

My skin blew up. Bad. Then, I went to a doctor up in Fargo, who took me off of everything, and put me on 150 milligrams of doxepin hydrochloride twice a day. It's an antidepressant with antihistamine qualities (I think) but it also causes some intense drowsiness. I took 150 milligrams in the morning (crazy.. as I had been taking 100 mg at night for years) and 150 at bed. It knocked me out, but the urge to tear off my skin was totally inhibited. Seems a little intense to shut down the whole computer to turn off one module, but maybe it's a step worth taking. (Maybe being a walking zombie for a week isn't an option) BUT you should probably try 150 milligrams (or more, or less) at night to inhibit the urge to scratch at night.

I'm a french and sociology major. I can't describe what causes eczema, I just know it sucks.

Did any of that help?
