And it`s a pleasure seeing you take this one to new heights and coming out ahead 👍, on CH now that`s what I call a challenge :bowdown:.
 
I just finished running the E.A.G. Corvette in the Beginner's Level Seasonal Event at Brands Hatch. My victory was only with CS tires, however, so it is nothing like the accomplishment of @RMan72... Well done, RMan72! That's pretty killer on CH tires!!

I forgot that I have ABS turned off for this car. I prepared to brake hard and turn in at Paddock Hill Bend. My foot went down firmer than I planned and I locked 'em up! My poor Corvette went skidding right into the sand. Thankfully I wasn't in it too deep and I drove out and proceeded to win the race. Even when I do use ABS=1, I almost never just slam on the brake pedal. Only if I've misjudged something, or I'm racing with friends and I'm trying to avoid a collision. But, I must have pressed this pedal too hard/too quickly.

This Corvette truly is a delight to drive. Once again, bravo to the EAG team!

Good to hear 👍 Except the Paddock Hill Bend bit of course :ouch: If I had a dollar for every time I've done the very same thing in the very same place....:banghead: It just seems to suck you in sometimes. Remember the last time you run off and you give it too much respect next time. Then the next lap you push again because you took it too easy and it's back in the sand-box :embarrassed:

The "never give up" mantra is the driving force for me as I have truly never got my head around driving without ABS. It seems that I may have cracked it, at least with the C1. Consistent mid 58s and another 1st place.

👍👍👍 It does take a while to get use to it but I find you feel so much better knowing that you have mastered the car without driving aids, just feels great.

Oh, no need to apologize! I know how busy you guys are putting the finishing touches on the car. You guys put so much time into EAG already...I don't post about using your car for a trophy - I just let you know so you're aware the car is being put to good use. :cheers: 👍 :D

Not a problem, I know you are busy on bringing us a new car.
As I've said before she's a pleasure to drive. She's taught me a few new driving techniques and introduced me to Comfort (tyres not the fabric conditioner)
Looking forward to getting to grips with EAG's new car.

I used to love music class at school. Definitely my best subject. I couldn't get enough of the practical part but hated the theory. It all looked like hyrogliphics to me so the sheet music may as well be the 1812 overture :lol:

This is a special build which has been brought forward in appreciation for @danbojte nominating our previous build for TotW. Both @TurnLeft and myself really appreciate that Dan broke his own rule and used a standard car, just to try out our work. And even more that he felt it worthy of being nominated above all of the others around for the honour that it was awarded. So we decided to make sure the next one he tries had a nicer interior to look at :D

The build itself was a no-brainer for our first premium car. It was the first car that came to mind when TL approached me about ideas for our banner and the design inspired by our friend @Leoz96, who provided us with our garage banner and many great pictures to be used in out Corvette project. When it came to the paint and body styling options, to go with his choices that were used for the picture in the banner was obvious ..Then @Brewguy44 picked the wheels :)

So without further ado, here is car number 2...

Mercedes 300SL – Scenario

We were contacted about this build by E-mail. It seems that a well known GT Racing Driver had recently purchased the car after the previous owner had decided it would be too costly to restore it. He came to us after being impressed by the job we did on out first full restoration, being a friend of the owner of that car and all.

We contacted the driver not long after we received his initial E-mail to ascertain his vision for the car. After a bit of a back and forth by E-mail, we got him on the phone and discussed what he was looking for.


TC- So what is it you are looking for with this car?

Driver- I want it to look like new and drive like new. The last owner replaced the engine already but I suppose a new gearbox would be good.

TC - Someone replaced the engine, was it beyond repair?

Driver - No he just wanted more power, the old one was included in the sale, so I still have it.


TC - That's good, I hate to see original part going to waste. So are you looking at a 5-speed or 6-speed? I take it you will be wanting a manual?

Driver I think a 5-speed manual should do, it only has about 240 horses. Just something that'll put the power down a bit better.


TC – What about the looks? any paint colour in mind?

DriverI just want it to look a bit more up-to date. It's a great looking car but I'd like it just to look a bit different. A bit more modern, but still classic looking.


TC – Oh, it's a beautiful car alright. I'd hate to ruin the look of the old SL. Some new wheels maybe? I'm sure the guys will have some ideas.

DriverYeah, definitely. I've not really got any set ideas for the colour.


TC – There's plenty of options from the factory range we could get you some samples and some wheel designs over to you if you want.

DriverThat's OK. I'll trust your judgement on it. I know you guys will do a good job with it. I'll make the arrangements to have it shipped over to you.


TC - Excellent, I look forward to it arriving. Thank you for giving us the opportunity of working on your car. It's a real honour for us. We're all big fans over here.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL – A History

In 1952 Mercedes-Benz entered the W194 for Gran Prix racing. They hadn’t entered a car since WWII and they were looking to reclaim some of their previous pre-war glory. The W194 did just that. Powered by a 3.0 liter straight-6, the W194 rattled off an impressive list of victories that included the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Bern-Bremgarten, the Eifelrennen at Nürburgring, and Mexico's Carrera Panamericana.

Max Hoffman was head of Mercedes-Benz distribution in the United States and he took great notice of this very successful race car. Max was convinced that a street-going version of the car would be a smashing success for Mercedes, especially in America. Stuttgart decided to listen to Mr. Hoffman and thus the Mercedes-Benz 300SL was born in 1954.

The cars produced by Daimler-Benz already enjoyed a reputation of building very respectable, but often boring, luxury automobiles. The 300SL would prove to the Americans that Mercedes could also build high-performance sport cars. In fact, out of the 1400 (coupe) 300SL’s built, it is estimated that 80% of those cars were sold in the United States. It isn’t hard to imagine why. The Mercedes SL300 is a gorgeous automobile with looks that have stood the test of time. American cars in the 1950’s had flashy paint jobs or enormous tailfins that begged for your attention. The 300SL took a different approach to design. Some might actually consider its design utilitarian, that is, until you catch a glimpse of those “Gullwing” doors.

To the uninitiated, those Gullwing doors might appear gimmicky, but they actually served a purpose. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the chief developing engineer at Daimler-Benz, was responsible for the car’s overall design and he was incorporating a welded aluminum tube spaceframe chassis – borrowed from the W194 race car. Traditional doors were impossible as this metal skeleton completely enveloped the passenger compartment. Such a chassis also saved a lot of weight and Uhlenhaut wanted the 300SL to be as lightweight as possible. Light weight equates to more speed. In fact, the letters “SL”, in the car’s model designation stand for “Sports Light” because of this design element.

The 300SL Benz was the fastest production car of its day. It isn’t surprising considering Mercedes was squeezing 215 horsepower out of this overhead-cam straight-6. The engine was actually borrowed from the regular, four-door Mercedes Benz 300, but instead of Solex carburetors, a groundbreaking Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection was installed. This street legal 300SL actually produced 25% more horsepower than the W194 race car and almost double the horsepower produced by the four-door 300!

Mercedes-Benz engineers made sure the 300SL was aerodynamically advanced for its day. Horizontal “eyebrows” were placed over the wheel arches in order to reduce drag. Also, its engine was tilted 45 degrees to allow an especially low hood line for less wind resistance, which was highly unusual at that time. Finally, the 300SL had four-wheel independent suspension Installed, which along with its precise steering made for a quite comfortable and well handling car.

In time, the powers that be in Stuttgart decided that a convertible 300SL should also be a hit so production began on the Roadster version in 1957. The Roadster actually outsold the Coupe with 1858 units moved. Still, it’s the Coupe that people truly remember and its iconic Gullwing doors continue to live on in the current day Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. It’s not uncommon to see well maintained 300SLs sell for $500,000 today.

Welcome to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupe '54 EAG Grand Tour at the famous Nurbugring Nordscleife. To participate all you have to do is run some clean laps and post your best time in this thread. You may also post a couple of your best pics with this car, we will add them to our gallery.

The rules are simple,

1. Car tuned as per spec sheet with CM (Comfort Medium tires). BB may be set to the drivers needs.

2. Use Nurburgring Nordscleife in Arcade Mode - Single Player - Time Trial - Track grip set to real.

3. ABS=0, TC=0, SRF=Off, Active Steering=Off, ASM=Off, you can use the AT but to get the true feel of this I recommend using MT (Manual Transmission). For those not familiar with ABS set to zero, it really doesn’t take long to get the hang of it with this car, when going fast down a slope hit the brakes hard for about 1 second then release and reapply the brakes gradually, also using MT helps to slow down by down shifting.

4. Post your best lap time and we will add it to our score board. This should be a clean lap, time counter turning to red disqualifies you.

5. You may post your new lap records as many times as you succeed in doing them.

6. Comments are always appreciated, even if you didn’t like it.

7. You may post a couple of pictures taken on your best lap time so we can put them in our Corvette Gallery.

8. Have fun and enjoy the ride, that's what all this is about.
