Random? Sounds, err... fun. We were planning late August / early September. What's it like then?

It's fun! :dopey: August/ September is warm and it'll get hot. In August last year it hit 116 one day. There's barely any humidity, though.

Aaaaw man I want to rent a Mustang when we go now. We've got the bog standard 'Focus or similar' deal through the holiday people but if we can get one for a decent price I'm doing it!

Just ask for an upgrade; it's usually not that much more, as long as they have the car you're looking for.

Don't let them pre-charge you for gas, either. Just the same, make sure you refill (about 5-10 miles away should do) before returning the car, or you'll pay $8/gallon needlessly.

I was a bit surprised that when we went, the cars that required the most money were the vans/SUVs. I don't remember how much the rate was since my buddy & his wife paid for it, but we had a Chrysler Town & Country (they have semi-manual modes on the gearboxes. ). And when we thought it would hold all of us & our luggage, they offered a Suburban for $80 more. The V6 Camaros/Mustangs were being offered for around $850/week.

Yeah, rental rates increase by size and seating capacity, not necessarily by the performance and cost of the car (exotics and luxury cars excluded). The city you rent at also makes a big difference; a comparable daily rental bill in Los Angeles or Dallas runs roughly twice that of a rental in say, Greensboro or Knoxville. I think in the cases of vans, people are more likely to need the van more, or just use it for one day to move stuff.

There's been a few instances whereby a group of my co-workers comes to a medium-sized town, and we just rent whatever vehicles they have (due to group rates, prices are vaguely the same when they "run out" of available vehicles).

I was guessing the rates were also higher since we went during the high season for Orlando in July, so the companies knew families would be there. I believe we booked ours through Hertz right at MCO.
