F1 TV coverage threadFormula 1

Well, you all could be so lucky to be from the land of capitalism, here in the U.S. nearly anything worth watching has been on pay tv (with nearly 50% of it being commercials) for most of the last 30 years. I have everything that is offered here locally (except team/season specific channels) and it runs $180 a month. Over 2 grand a year and about all I watch is 6-8 channels...and no, we don't get FS2 :irked:

My local cable company still doesn't have NBC Sports - we've cut out cable since we were also watching only 5-6 channels. With Netflix we get a movie fix, but after that, I don't care enough anymore for F1 after the four "free over the air" races on NBC.

I'm seriously considering getting Foxtel. Not because of the Grands Prix moving there, but because free-to-air television is terrible at the moment. If I do get Foxtel, then I'm going to look at the sports package, but I'm curious: how much coverage of European open-wheel championships is there? I'm thinking of GP2 and European Formula 3 among others.

The GP2 and other open wheelers that we get get here, is at very random times.
Make sure you series link (read your guide)as it is easy to miss. Saying that they repeat stuff up to 3 times. Well they used to. It's a couple of years since I had Foxtel. They have a bucket load of ads too.

I'd consider checking out Foxtel Go! just because there's no lock-in contract and then switch to the real deal if you really like it (unless your internet speed sucks). At my house we've managed to get a password for it from my girlfriend's mum, So we're pretty much getting it for free.

Thanks for the advice, but I still don't have a dedicated internet connection - just the data available on my mobile plan and a pre-paid mobile broadband device.

I've just ordered Sport1 go, 6 channels of various sports and racing, F1, GP2,3 Dtm, European F3, WRC, Nascar and Indy are all supposedly live. For €10,- a month. Only downside is that it isn't HD as it is a streaming service. But after watching half the F1 races last year on RTL Germany, which also wasn't HD this should be a massive improvement.

And I have my pc connected to my tv so I can still sit on my couch.

Well, Ten's coverage continues to be terrible down here. Under the split deal, they missed Malaysia and China, and so Bahrain is the first race they have broadcast since Melbourne. And it starts at midnight. Then the replay is on at midnight. It's pretty obvious that they're only broadcasting late races, so that they can show "encore" (read: day after) repeats of "The Odd Couple" and "Family Feud".

And given the way they announced the joint broadcast deal with FOXTEL a month out from the Australian Grand Prix, that meant that there was just a month for people without FOXTEL to arrange it. Of course, this is far easier said than done - it took me a month to get the FOXTEL kit, and even then I'm having trouble; my building needs an upgrade of its FOXTEL dish to get a signal.

So if it was their intention to introduce theur coverage in the worst possible way, I'd say that they were a roaring success.

Even though Sky still show adverts during the build up and post session reactions, I still can't fault their depth of coverage and extra programmes they put on air.

Only that "Just Drive" thing. Can't stand it.

But yeah, Sky might be money-grabbing swines who ruin some sports like football, but the F1 coverage is objectively, on the whole, very good.

It really is time for the BBC to move in to 21st century funding.
And in doing so curtail the necessity for sending heinous threatening letters to people it thinks should be paying their TV license. I had two through after I cancelled mine, either because they're untrusting or because they're morons. It makes me wonder how many people pay for a TV license out of fear of being taken to court.

I used watch Sky's F1 coverage when it originally came as part of their HD package, and thought it was very good, or at least on a par with the Beeb's coverage. The extra related shows were pretty good to. I just couldn't justify paying another £35-45 a month for the Sports Bundle now though as F1's the only thing i'd watch from it.

Sky have done a really good job of their coverage but like many, I still long for full BBC coverage to return. I like Sky's line-up but BBC still take the cake for me.

I pay £20 a month to my sister which allows her to upgrade to Sky Sports from her existing package, and I watch the coverage on Sky Go. It's not ideal, and at £20 a month it is on the cusp of being too expensive, since I don't watch much else on Sky either. I was planning to drop Sky Sports and save some money, since watching the races on the BBC later in the day is not usually a problem - but if the BBC plan to drop F1 altogether, then that would be a great shame - although I could see ITV bidding for the highlights/repeats coverage deal... bring back Dracula!

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I certainly would like to see more terrestrial coverage of the F1, but I much prefer the commentary team on Sky, I think mainly because Coulthard has the charisma and energy of a wet paper bag.

I like the Sky coverage but they are missing a technical expert in my opinion, I don't mind Kravitz but they need someone with first-hand experience working on an F1 car to help him out.

Isn't that what Tony Jardine is there for? Although I'm not sure how often he actually appears on Sky.

I don't know what to make of Kravitz, he can sometimes be very good and then go to complete and utter cringe.

Generally though, I find the Sky F1 coverage to be very good.

Im finding kravitz to be quite anoying now, he knows mostly what he is talking about and is very passionate but he has a clear Bias for certain drivers and it sticks out badly, if he can remove the bias he is perfect.

Sky F1 coverage is biased as hell towards Hamilton though. I have to say I prefer BBC. I would like to see Brundle and Coulthard commentating together again.

The only thing that irritates me about Sky's coverage is the fairly obvious Hamilton bias. Other than that, Sky's coverage (on the whole) is far more in-depth and engaging than what the BBC now offer. The show feels rushed and inadequate, more like an afterthought rather than an attempt at comprehensive coverage - I think it's definitely up there with ITV4's ToCA package in terms of setting standards for modern motorsport coverage. Granted, it might not be the cheapest option ever, but a bit of haggling will get you a very reasonable HD package deal.

Sky is definitely more in depth but anything else would be pretty ridiculous when they have a channel that is dormant for a lot of the time. If they could get the right people in it would be great to watch.

No.
