Fallout 4

Fallout 4 all day. GTA is an awesome game don't get me wrong but Fallout just feels better when it comes to environment. It is a bit depressing due to its apocalyptic atmosphere but that is what makes it such a great adventure.

Might get a biased response as this is the FallOut thread, but...

Pick a game:
Fallout 4 OR GTA 5.
If you had to buy one today, which one?

Jeez - what a toughie.

On the one hand, I think GTAV would probably be easier for you to pick up and play based on your resume of mostly playing racing and sports games. Also, you should find it easy to enjoy the driving aspect of the game (though its very arcade handling wise and I turn down the sensitivity as soon as I load every GTA game to something less twitchy). I managed to enjoy 60 hours plus of single player GTAV on PS3 before getting fatigued of it, and I wasn't at the end of the single player at that point! There are many mini games you unlock along the way. The online part of GTAV I can't say much about as I tried it briefly and it felt like as a noob all that happened was me being shot/blown up/rammed/killed over and over. But others have obviously spent many hours playing online and could tell you more about that.

But on the other hand, Fallout 4 is probably a deeper game that will keep you enthralled for longer (haven't played it yet past the first drops of goodness). The more you put into Fallout 4 the more you will get out of it, that applies to all the Fallout games. Fallout 3 was a fantastic adventure and easy to lose 100 hours playing if you got obsessed. I can't believe that Fallout 4 will be anything other than a repeat of that. In addition, this is likely to be close to as good as it gets for role playing games that have been released to date.

One other minor thing to consider is that GTAV has had a year or more of bug fixes and patches whereas Fallout 4 has had the day one patch only so far. But that only matters if you get hyped up by finding bugs in games. Anything major in Fallout 4 will likely be patched quickly. Fallout 4 does have the "brand new" buzz and excitement though and that is a major plus to be had.

To be honest, if you haven't played GTAV already on PS3 then I would say that is a must buy on PS4/PC. If you've played it before on PS3, then I would suggest Fallout 4 first before replaying GTAV on PS4. But I don't think you can go wrong whichever game you go for.

Hope this helped in some way

Haven't played Fallout 4 past the intro due to performance issues, but I would say GTA V.

Fallout is cool... but it's a single player game. Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, they are games you come to predict very easily, and thus stop being fun after a while.

GTA V on the other hand... infinite fun to be had online.

EDIT: Adding to this, TES is a different thing. Morrowind, Skyrim, they are much, much bigger than the Fallouts, map-wise and possibilities-wise.

Anyone else having problems with Fallout? The game refuses to boot. It will play about 4 seconds worth of intro and then immediately crash. I've tried every work around I could find and nothing helps.

PC specs?

If I had to make that decision today it would be Fallout 4, no doubt, because I already have played GTA V ad nauseum. Now let's say both games released today, I'd probably get both, but if I could pick only one, it would be Fallout. I spend more time in a single Bethesda game than in all the GTA's combined.

Is it true dialogue options are weaker compared to previous Fallouts and you can't kill random people?

And how does it run on the Xbone?

fallout 4 , gta5 is not even allowed to stand in his shadow.....
(still good single player game that gta :embarrassed:)

dialogue is a bit weaker i think, more in mass effect style,.... but not really sure only 4 hours in the game atm.

Core i7-3770k
AMD HD 78XX 2gb
32gb ddr3 ram

Using latest drivers?
You on 1080p?
What anti virus software?

If you go into event viewer and look at the latest logs, do you see any logs that have happened when it's crashed, if so, what does the report say?

I prefer the dialogue now - never made sense to me to read every single thing I could possible say and pick the best one. And then being able continually reset the dialogue and ask every single question, in past games.
Most of the dialogue in past games is just lore based info anyway.
In FO4 you get some of this stuff in holotapes that play back on your Pipboy and out in the world.

You can kill anyone except the essential companions. No different from past games.

Having played a bit longer I think the review scores in the high 80s are about right, if it ran a bit smoother and played more fluidly then it would be in the high 90s for me.

This game is so frustrating....anyone else get the bug where you can't progress through the story due to the constant joy of scrapping random junk into materials in build mode? No, just me?

I think in the 7-8 hours I have played so far, about 4-5 hours have been cleaning and rebuilding Sanctuary, why oh why did they add this feature, its so addicting!

Otherwise the game is great :sly:. I have had one freeze up (Xbox one) and a dead enemy flopping around.

I have played for about 2 hours and I am hooked. I just made to the subdivision where your house is and have been exploring the area and collecting junk.

I have the game on survival mode so I am curious as to what to expect as I progress further. I was hoping for the day off from work today to play the game (like some family members of mine) but alas, I am unable to.

Also for anyone else who finds copper hard to come by, the *street lights will give you copper, though when scrapping, the copper comes in the form of the broken light bulbs listed.

*In build mode/workbench area

I have a question for some of the PC guys around here. Every 20-30 minutes I would say I get an error saying Display driver kernel has crashed or something down that line. Anyone know what causes that?

Thanks for the replies. I'll be getting Fallout via Steam Black Friday/Cyber Monday...assuming they'll run it for a pretty strong discount.

Could be many things.

What graphics card have you got?

Do you know what drivers you're using?

Right, those are the latest drivers, I found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/3s9nc2/nvidia_windows_kernel_mode_driver_has_stopped/

The opening poster has the same card as you, clocking it down helped them.

Sounds like the latest Nvidia drivers are a bit flakey.

Thanks a ton for finding that. I searched yesterday for a solution but it never pulled that thread up. I've never actually rolled back drivers. Is that done on Nvidia Geforce Experience or where do you do that at?

Quick run through my first thoughts.

  • Haven't ran into glitches yet. Only had a coupe of frame rate drops.
  • :censored:ing Radscorpions! And feral Ghouls. 🤬 them too.
  • I quite like the way Power Armour is done now. It is actually how I imagined power armour should be 👍
  • Rain! Weather! Woohoo!
  • The grenade system is a lot better. Can both have your gun out and throw a grenade! Oh and hit people with your gun.
  • Not sure how to get perks, if they're gone then that's a damn shame.
  • Less barren and glum. Quite like that.
  • Armour is a slightly odd system. Individual limbs get individual pieces. A mix and match armour makes more sense especially in the wasteland. Neat little touch.
Overall, I'm enjoying it. Even if I get my ass kicked by a raider with a pistol.

Adhesive is really important for crafting. Here is how to make your own!

https://ss.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3sezph/psa_there_is_an_unlimited_renewable_source_of/

By now I presume everyone is frustrated about finding adhesive, which to this point is the limiting factor on all of my crafting. For a while it was fun to have to decide which mod I wanted before I went out scavenging again, but no more. Here's the details:

  1. There is a recipe in the cooking menu under util called 'vegetable paste'. I accidentally discovered that vegetable paste breaks down into adhesive. Specifically, FIVE adhesive.
  2. The recipe calls for 3 each of mutfruit, corn, and tato. All of these can be grown at your settlement, giving you a permanent supply of each. It may take a while to get the operation spun up (not long -- see below for getting started), but since you can harvest and replant, you should be able to get a massive amount of each, eventually.
  3. The recipe also calls for one purified water. If I'd told you that you could turn one purified water into five adhesive, you'd probably be pretty happy, but it gets better. If you build a water purifier in your settlement, you will occasionally get purified water deposited at the workshop. I built an industrial sized water purifier in the river at Sanctuary, and when I went to check I found 31 purified water in my workshop. Also a good source of health.
All you have to decide now is what you're gonna name that gun you wanted to build.

additional hints to get you started:

  1. There's a ton of tato at Abernathy Farm, TenPines Bluff, and GreyGarden. There's also a ton of corn and mutfruit at GreyGarden. Use these to start your own operation!

  2. It may be advisable to drop the paste and scrap it by hand to get the five adhesive. I'm still unclear on whether using it at the workshop will consume the entire item and you'll lose the rest, or if the rest goes into your workshop inventory. Whether or not this happens is hotly debated (see comments). I haven't tested it myself.
edits:

  1. According to u/Ommageden, you can also get purified water from Codsworth

  2. For everyone asking about finding screws: The scrapper perk will allow you to get rarer materials from breaking down guns. All of those pipe pistols you find will give you screws and copper if they have mods on them, even ****** mods. (side note: you can remove and keep the good mods by replacing them with ******** mods).

  3. A lot of people are saying they have a ton of adhesive and don't need more. Adhesive isn't necessarily that hard to find, but almost all of the leather armor mods and firearm mods use a ton of it, so us sneaky sniper gun nut types are always out. It's found in much smaller quantities than, say, steel, which you can get by the bucketload. As you build better and better mods, they start using more and more adhesive.

  4. GreyGarden is here (thanks u/tiwuno)

Also you can use DogMeat to get the cyro gun at the starter vault... just ask him to find an item while standing nearby, can take a few tries, and he'll do this :)

Dogmeat with an air kill..... :)

Thanks a ton for finding that. I searched yesterday for a solution but it never pulled that thread up. I've never actually rolled back drivers. Is that done on Nvidia Geforce Experience or where do you do that at?

You'll need to do it in Device Manager.

Press Windows key and R at the same time on your keyboard
Type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) in the box and press enter

Open up Display adapters, go in to the properties of the driver and go to the Driver tab.
Select Update Driver then Browser my computer for driver software
Then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

The version numbers on here won't match up with the 358.91, etc, but the dates are listed, so you should be able to revert back one at a time until (or indeed if) the problem resolves. Then just select the driver you want to install and then click Next and follow the instructions. Restart your machine post installation if you aren't asked to.

355.60 was released in August.

I expect Nvidia will eventually fix these issues for FO4.
