Shotguns work well against Mirelurks. But yeah, that one is a bit over the top for a beginner quest.
I prefer to keep my distance with those things, it's absolutely terrifying when 3/4 of them are scurrying towards you, I usually use that Thompson-like smg and aim for their heads.

You have to aim at the soft under belly of the Mirelurks, otherwise they don't take much damage

And bring some mines, they help a lot on this quest, plant a few on the walkways for a quick retreat.
Especially after a quicksave and reload when needed once you see how they move

As far as aiming grenades, you can judge them with practise, they work pretty well.
If not then grab the demolition/explosive perk in the perception tree that gives you a grenade arc to aim with

Are there any weapons that use .50 ammo apart from the hunting rifle?

Well the pipe rifle can be upgraded to take 0.50 caliber ammo. I turned my legendary Pipe rifle into a sniper weapon with a 0.50 caliber receiver and recon scope to mark enemies as well.
You will need a high ranks in the Gun Nut perk

Was given a quest to remove some Ghouls. Decided to run there until Rad scorpions came out of the ground, with my nerves on edge I went caucious the rest of the way, at the location I stayed on sneak with silenced pistol and had a field day.
I killed around 20 - 25 Ghouls most of which were still asleep, therefore getting 2x bonus, most required two to three shots accept a Glowing one, he was greedy and needed five.
On leaving building nearly got killed by a Black Bloatfly, healed myself and promptly walked on a mine.
Fast tracked to Sanctuary for a rest, only to get attacked by Mutants, which my defences delt with, this game never lets up.

I must say, the difference in hacking difficulty between my Intelligence 10 and 1 characters is enormous!

On the 10 INT guy - you only have to guess 4 words on a Novice computer, and usually after eliminating all the duds with the {} [] <> strings etc in the hacking field, your down to 1.

With 1 INT girl, I might see 10-15 words on the same Novice computer...

While in Sanctuary I picked up a Distress signal, tracked to 98.73% near the TV in the house you start from but cannot find anything, I'm thinking it's a bug or something unless anyone can help.

This gun has saved me from many-a-Deathclaw and one Swan.

I try to use this, but ammo is so damn scarce.

This one is used about 80% of the time. It's a bit odd, but that bayonet actually comes in handy for the smaller animals'/creatures that run up

At first I wasn't all too interested, but the last couple of days have been dedicated to finding materials just to build. I built myself a 3-story fortress that I'm currently trying to get electricity running through.

It's funny though, I only have 14 settlers, but my defense is around 200~, and the all the settlers have some type of explosive launcher. I got invaded by synths the other day, and whatever the turrets didn't destroy, the Fat Man's did. It was pretty amazing to see a couple of Mini Nukes going off in the distance.

Does anyone else get a ridiculous amount of corrupt game saves? It's almost every single time I fire my One back up. It's to the point that I save a handful of times in a row before I get off.

I have 9 settlements going right now, and like you, I wasn't going to mess with this due to the management required. My solution to this was have about 3-6 settlers at each with around 20 defense and minimum requirements for food and water and my communities pretty much get left alone. Only one has required my assistance in fighting off the super mutants and the subsequent repairs.

I have had zero corrupt saves on my PS4 and I have around 20 hours in the game. I also turned off all auto-saves at the beginning.

I'm only really taking care of Sanctuary right now, and it's sitting at 15 settlers. I forgot that I had left the beacon on, so maybe I should turn it off for a bit. I'm sitting at 200~ Defense, and around 40-50 for everything else . Bit of an overkill, but I'm sure they're living a hell of a life right now. With the amount of defense, I really don't have to do much for them.

I'm wondering if the corruption is somehow linked to the auto-save feature. I'm going to disable it to see how I fair, but as of last night, I didn't have a corrupt file, so let's hope it stays that way.

For those PC wizards in here, how well do you reckon my PC could run Fallout 4?

Intel Core I5 3770 3.4 Ghz
8GB Ram
Nvidia 960 2GB

I'm aiming for full HD. Input will be much appreciated.

Yes it can but I suggest you use some optimization tools and mods. I think I got the FPS sweet spot now using variety of tools and patience. Here's the tools that I've used.
1. Nvidia Control Panel
2. Fallout 4 Tweaker
3. Radeon Pro

The mods.
1. Fallout 4 Texture Optimization Project
2. Shadow Boost

To make the game look better, I suggest using some Reshade and Sweetfx. Here's what I recommend.
1. Alone
2. Clear Fallout
3. Uber Fidelity Suite
4. Cinematic Excellence
5. Darker Nights (mod)

The .308 Sniper Rifle can be upgraded with a .50 Receiver. You need to be a Rank 3 Gun Nut. (I'm not there yet)

It also requires:-

Adhesive 7
Aluminum 10
Gear 4
Oil 5
Screw 8

This mod increases Damage to 67 and Fire Rate to 4.

I was a bit stupid and went mad helping settlers and now have fifteen, so I stopped putting beacons up. The one's without beacons have so far never called for help, I've just left them alone to get on with it and they're all at 60 happy.
I do visit now and then and do some work, the bonus with the settlements spread around is fast tracking, you're less likely to fast track into a fire fight.
I've kept auto saves on and have had no problems.

Havent posted in a few days. Currently I have 14 settlements and about 75 hours of gameplay and I am level 26. Also still playing on hard. Something else to mention, since I have so many settlements and several stores, money is not an issue at all any more.

Last night something happened that I did not expect at all. I was in the process of building up some of my settlements so I removed armor and most of my weapons to free weight. Keep in mind settlements are a nice chill way for me to relax in the game. Not much to worry about besides gathering resources, and keeping settlers happy. I like to wind down in settlements before I go to bed for the night. So last night I am traveling from settlement to settlement increasing the happiness and generally doing my thing. I decided to fast travel to one of the new settlements (a boat dock) I acquired that had about 4 people. I spawn and the music gets very eerie and I hear a loud noise along with shaking. Right next to where I spawn a deathclaw lands next to my settlers and cuts 2 of them in half immediately. I am in such shock I don't even have a weapon out yet. Basically stumbling with the controls and just as I pull out a gun, the deathclaw swipes my head right off my body for a beautiful decapitation. One of the most startling, unprepared moments, I have ever encountered. I dang near crapped my pants.

After gathering myself for a minute, I put some clothes on, loaded up my cryo gun, and head back over there. The music happened, and the deathclaw dropped down again, but this time I was able to save my settlers, and just barely killed it in time. This is also in my "xbox record" that recent videos.

On a side note the cryo gun is absolutely amazing. Grabbed it after leveling up my lockpick. Ammo is a bit tough to find but this gun will wreck most anything in seconds. The deathclaw is about the only challenge I have encountered with this gun.

I am also starting to see more and more bugs with the game. Cows on houses, most of the items in the world now light up for me when I get near them. Kinda similar to being in vats or the workbench menu. Oh well, it was fully expected. I am making several saves in preparation for a game ending bug. Still loving this game.

Should run fine. I have a GTX 570 1.2GB and I made it work out of the box.

Turning the beacons off is one of the first things I do once I reach my target area of settlers in each community. Some of them provide a natural defensive position and those are ones I plan on growing.

Let me know if that works. I am curious to see if that saved me some grief.

Same here. I periodically check in and outfit the one person I have on guard duty with better gear and weapons and make sure I don't need to repair any turrets or anything.

Are you on PS4?

Yeah I,m on PS4. I intentionally opened settlements nicely spread around the map to make travelling a bit safer. I opened the workshop but stopped making the beacon, I grow food so as to spread to other settlements and so far been ok.
I have recently started to do the Red Rocket, initially I didn't see the point being so close to Sanctuary I just gutted it instead. I'm doing an experiment, I'm going to try to fully build and equip a site and see how far I get before some one takes lodge.

Did fast track to one location, which I had already cleaned out of baddies, to go junk collecting. I was on sneak just in case while inside a newspaper kiosk, heard some heavy footsteps, a yelp from Dogmeat and I looked out the window to see a Deathclaw walk past like Godzilla, luckily I was still hidden. After a few seconds went out, no Deathclaw and Dogmeat on the roof of nearby building. That was close.
Had a Deathclaw just now at Abernathy Farm, getting close to Sanctuary.

I have started to work out strategies for dealing with different enemies, like targeting the legs of ghouls to immobilise them.

Is there a way to dodge or strafe? A super mutant at the treatment plant causes me a lot of headaches when it lobbed molotov cocktails at me and I struggled to get out of the way (and his line of fire). I think I used twelve stimpaks just dealing with him alone.

There's a cover mode. Just hug the wall while facing it and hold the iron sights. You should peek out the edge. You have to stand at a certain distance from the edge so the cover actually works. As far as I know though you can't peek above you.
Some cover does shield blasts like grenade blasts but sometimes molotovs can cut through and pass fire damage.
Another solution is to find a way to flank enemies. A lot of areas in this game provide a lot of ways to flank someone. Of course you have to sneak a little so you can catch them off-guard.

Yes aiming for legs is always a good strategy.
Also if you react fast enough with vats, you can target the Molotov while it is in his hand or in mid air, and explode it in his face. :)

I got annihilated trying approach the treatment plant, I think there were two Super Mutants because I managed to kill one of them. I tried to pick one of them off with a Sniper rifle from a distance and they rushed my position, I didn't have a decent weapon at the time, only a double barrel shotgun, I backed away quickly and avoided the Molotov cocktail, killed one damaged the other but then he got in close and melee'd me , insta-death. Luckily I saved right before. After I reloaded my save I chose to take that one up another time.

Dogmeat is brilliant with the Ghouls, every one he gets hold off, he floors and you see them writhing on the ground trying to get away.
Mutants, sniped one in the head and it only made him mad, found Legendary Mutant with some kind of rocket launcher, fires four quick shots. Outgunned so left him for later, travelled too far East - way out of my depth.

Two? I ran into eight.

Like I said, all I did was approach the Water Treatment Plant, I did not enter it. Which was a good thing if you say there are 8 of them. After trying to pick off one of the Super mutants with a Sniper Rifle, they rushed out of the facility directly towards my position outside the plant, only two of them. When I do get around to going back there (hopefully I am a lot more leveled up by then), I will be more cautious; thanks for the warning.

Very masculine. Just as "Nora" is feminine. And "Nate and Nora" sounds like the title of a cheesy Chuck Lorre sitcom, which I suppose is the point.

I know it's just a name, but since it's an avatar for the player - an extension of the player in the digital world - so we project a lot of our own selves onto it. The name is really the only thing that belongs to the character (and even that can be replaced), so the name given by the developers has to be representative of them; hence the masculine "Nate" and feminine "Nora". After all, when Ian Fleming created James Bond, he chose the name because he felt that it was simple, effective and masculine; had he named the character "Percival Higgins-Smythe", Bond would have been a radically different character (case in point, Jeffrey Deaver used that name for a character in the continuation novel Carte Blanche, and as was intended, he was a self-important tosser).

Didn't mean to get analytical on you, but I just finished a unit of work on the merits of emerging digital media as a text type (read: can we stydy video games the way we do film and serious literature?) with my Year 9 class.
Not a problem. Glad I could help.:) We had company at our house for the weekend so didn't get around to logging into GTP until now.

Having got over the kleptomaniac phase of the game, I'm now doing what I did in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim.

That's to walk everywhere!

I rarely use fast travel now that I'm established, and of course, I'm finding all sorts of experiences in odd places.

It's amazing how much "stuff" there is that doesn't get a marker on the map. Not just collectibles, but buildings and inhabitants of all kinds.
